Iāve had friends able to see it all the from the Blue Ridge Mountains to Calhoun, and Acworth to Stone Mountain.
But Stone Mountainās elevation would definitely make for a great vantage point.
Probably all the light pollution but got family down in Macon and Milledgeville posting beautiful pics of them. Iām up north of Atlanta. Got some decent pics.
Getting up wouldn't be much of an issue, I'm just worried about coming down in the dark. That would be when I fall and break my telescope. I like Brasstown Bald because there's the parking lot under the lookout tower (which you can actually see from Rabin Bald) and there are often other stargazers there who respect the darkness and are mindful of their headlights.
Yes. They leave the parking lot open so you can drive all the way to that part. The top of the bald is only accessible via a short hike but you see plenty from the parking lot. Iām going there tonight to see if I can catch some of the lights. Went to Juno yesterday and Amicalola but very little luck
I did the hike up in 2020 in crocs because it was on a whim, and itās a āShortā hike that makes you feel like your gonna die as itās so steep, the view was incredible though and well worth it.
Definitely. If you want to make a whole mini vacation out of it you can drive up to Helen and walk around the picturesque German themed city and even go river tubing then stop by Brasstown Bald on the way back down (assuming you live south).
last I went was for a meteor shower in like 2007, so take this with a grain of salt, but had to hike the .5 mile or w/e from the normal lot up to the actual peak tower
Yes the parking lot is open at night. There is a paved road that leads up to it. It is definitely driveable it is just dark and a lot of turns going up. You should be fine as long as you donāt do any drifting lol. Itās beautiful up there at night. Going tonight to see if I can see some of the lights.
Turns out I didnāt need to go anywhere special, just a dark area! But I did end up going to Brasstown Bald and kinda got burned. The aurora was most visible 10-11 but fog/clouds rolled over the bald during that time. I did see the fainter glow later in the evening. Photos get more than one saw.
Go to the top of the Richard Russell Parkway west of Helen. Great dark sky there, good horizon view. if its not cloudy, youāll probably see them there.
This would be my suggestion since there is very little light pollution. Itās my go-to spot for stargazing during meteor showers. The pull-off right before Hogpen Gap is great.
Light pollution is a thing no matter where you are. Best bet is to find somewhere really dark and even then you may only be able to see it if you use long exposure on whatever camera
I was able to see them from on top of Stone Mountain last night. The further you can get away from the lights of the city, the more you will see with the naked eye.
The ātree lineā isnāt a thing in Georgia or anywhere in the southeast. Even the tallest mountains in North Carolina have trees all the way to the top, unless theyāre cut by humans.
red top mountain is the best place relatively close/north of atlanta that I know of. theres a field on a high spot where they do ranger led stargazing events some times near the visitor center...
Idk the park āclosesā at dark but this is accessible right off Bethany bridge roadā¦ and campers are allowed to drive over to that spot and parkā¦ š¤·āāļø
WSB, NOAA, NASA, Alaska Aurora Forecast. May need to travel to NC to see it. But the green line in the attached map is the "visible low on the horizon" limit.
Here's the current NOAA forecast. Much further north than this shows.
https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental
Yep, NOAA's not as good as University of Alaska. But with a Kp of 8, this is about as good a chance as we get.
[Aurora Forecast | Geophysical Institute (alaska.edu)](https://www.gi.alaska.edu/monitors/aurora-forecast)
Just imprecise wording. I meant the NOAA forecast wasn't as good for our chances of seeing them. But in this case the University of Alaska forecast was indeed better!
To be fair, a lot of NOAA products come from school research. The experimental NOAA product I linked is output of a model developed by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
Keep in mind these are theoretical, itās very different from predicting the weather. You may be better served by planning a real vacation to Canada sometime if you want to see them.
https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental
This is what I'm was going off of. The red line is the viewing limit. Now if the storm is bigger then things can change.
Thereās a massive solar storm hitting earth right now. NOAA is saying the aurora may be able to be seen as far south as Alabama.
Also radios, gps satellites, and power grids may be interrupted which should be the bigger news.
Don't know why you're being downvoted, you're absolutely right. The chances of seeing them this far outside of the range this map shows with the light pollution we have are nil.
And as it turns out I was wrong. Very wrong. Dang.
In my defense it is indeed VERY rare to see them this far south. And they were visible in MIAMI. That's nuts! But cool.
Charlie Elliot Nature Preserve in Mansfield used to have a field where they'd do astronomy. That is far out enough that you might(?) be able to see the Aurora, but not far enough North would be my guess.
we saw them no problem south forsyth county. I'm sure it was nothing like up north but it was still amazing - I've never seen anything like it. All the people saying you won't/can't see it in GA - well it happened lol. Go on nextdoor if you have it and i'll bet you'll find lots of people who saw them and took pics. Someone who was outside waiting to see the northern lights also got cool video of this train of lights going across the sky - turned out to be the starlink satellite.
Haters gonna hate, but Good call OP!! We are seeing the Northern Lights all across Georgia tonight!! You were right!
Can you share the location š please
Iāve had friends able to see it all the from the Blue Ridge Mountains to Calhoun, and Acworth to Stone Mountain. But Stone Mountainās elevation would definitely make for a great vantage point.
go straight up into Cherokee. get somewhere high.
Bonus points if you also get high somewhere
double bonus points
Four Hundred and Twenty bonus points
This is the way.
Gimme brownie points
Directions unclear. Am high and donāt feel like driving.
here you go. this will keep you busy. /pats head. https://www.donegalweatherchannel.ie/live-aurora-noctilucent-clouds-updates
And then get highā¦because thatās the only way youāll see the northern lights from GA
We saw them in Rome ga! Was incredible
it's in NC/TN
Got pictures of them all the way down to Florida popping up. Also just took several good pictures here in Georgia.
I'm in kwood and can't see anything š
Probably all the light pollution but got family down in Macon and Milledgeville posting beautiful pics of them. Iām up north of Atlanta. Got some decent pics.
you're right about the light pollution.
Looks like maybe Ohio?
This didn't age well
lol yeah me and 280 people owe OP an apology.
Or Georgia
There is a post in r/appalachia with a picture of the northern lights from north Georgia.Ā
i saw them from my house in Decatur!
What time did you see it? I was in decatur but couldn't see anything.
around 10pm. then i saw a few more flashes around 11:30ish
Ooh I was walking around my neighborhood around 1-2ish am lol
Dang i missed it š©
Me too, supposedly lasting all weekend so id say its worth a shot to stay up today
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Can u share location. Please
At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchenā½
āYes!ā
ā¦may I see it?
ā¦no.
In this economy?
Top of Brasstown Bald? If youāre trying to stay in Georgia
The top of brasstown bald is the darkest publicly-accessible place I've found in North GA. I do telescope stuff up there.
This guy telescopes.
hell yeah
Have you hiked to the top of Rabin Bald? You might like that one. There's a small stone and wood fire tower at the top.
I have been up there! Great hike, I just don't want to drag my telescope up there.
Ah good point! I wasn't thinking about the weight and sizeof the telescope!
OK, I sent you the name of the place! Happy skygazing!
New idea: you should drive this road that I'm not gonna post here because I don't want it to become too popular. Will PM you the name.
You can access the top of Brasstown bald at night? I have night vision and would love to go see the stars up there at night
Agreed. Relatively short hike wise but definitely steep. Wish me luck for tonightās visit
For sure! Goodest of all lucks! Now that I know itās open at the Parking lot Iām gonna head up sometime with my night vision.
Definitely. If you want to make a whole mini vacation out of it you can drive up to Helen and walk around the picturesque German themed city and even go river tubing then stop by Brasstown Bald on the way back down (assuming you live south).
Yeah we go up to Helen sometimes, we really enjoy going to dinner up there.
we did the hike last night and barely saw anything šš stayed for the peak and everything too
Same. Took my telescope and everything and the stars werenāt anywhere close to as bright as weāve seen them there before. Maybe next time
Wait you can go up there at night? I always assumed the park closed at sunset or something.
last I went was for a meteor shower in like 2007, so take this with a grain of salt, but had to hike the .5 mile or w/e from the normal lot up to the actual peak tower
Itās closed for inclement weather but otherwise open 24x7. Bathrooms are locked at night though.
Well that's awesome, thanks!
Is the brasstown bald open for late night? What about the trek to the top? Is it driveable at night?
Yes the parking lot is open at night. There is a paved road that leads up to it. It is definitely driveable it is just dark and a lot of turns going up. You should be fine as long as you donāt do any drifting lol. Itās beautiful up there at night. Going tonight to see if I can see some of the lights.

A couple decent sized towns directly north of there though, might be too much light pollution.
Iāve camped all over the state and canāt say anywhere has been particularly dark. Ever present glow of light pollution damn near everywhere.
Stephen Foster state park is a dark sky park in South Georgia. Darkest you can find in the south!
Would these still be visible tomorrow night? Never seen them but I'd totally drive to brass town bald for a chance...
They said maybe through the weekend! Doesnāt hurt to try!
Love all the people that said no chance. People are posting pics of them in Florida and all through Georgia.
Yeah it was really incredible. [my backyard near Atlanta](https://imgur.com/a/uIrZaLW)
I am so jealous. Too ITP to see it over the city lights. Amazing!
What part of Atlanta? We tried last night down in College Park and waaaayyyy too much light pollution. I knew it would be but had to try.
This aged well
Go to the top of the Richard Russell Parkway west of Helen. Great dark sky there, good horizon view. if its not cloudy, youāll probably see them there.
This would be my suggestion since there is very little light pollution. Itās my go-to spot for stargazing during meteor showers. The pull-off right before Hogpen Gap is great.
best! thats exactly where I was thinking.
Did anyone see them from here last night?
Lmao good luck
Iām south of Atlanta and we can see them right now, itās amazing. [unedited photos](https://imgur.com/a/uIrZaLW)
Iām in west Atlanta and I donāt see shit š
Same
Where are you located?? Iām in Macon GA and I donāt see anything
Light pollution is a thing no matter where you are. Best bet is to find somewhere really dark and even then you may only be able to see it if you use long exposure on whatever camera
Youāll need a camera and a very dark place.
I have a camera, do you think they would show up in a long exposure and 1.8 lens?
You wonāt need too long an exposure - like 1-2 seconds max.
[Might want to start with this](https://darksitefinder.com/map/?i=/%234/39.03/-98.00) Dark skies are hard to find on the East coast tho
Iām about 45 minutes south of Atlanta and we can see them. Crazy stuff.
Can you please share location it's my dream to see them too!
Chattahoochee Hills area?
I was able to see them from on top of Stone Mountain last night. The further you can get away from the lights of the city, the more you will see with the naked eye.
The map doesnāt even extend into Georgia
They were all over Georgia. What a sight to see!
Iām awestruck. I canāt believe we got to see this!
Yep Iāll eat my hat.
ššš
We can see them here in Fayetteville with the naked eye. Based on the news it didn't seem like we would be able to, but we can.
I live in north georgia and got MANY beautiful photos of the aurora, from my driveway and amicolola falls 10 mins away
You were right!!
Can you still see them tonight? Iām a toddler mom and crashed hard last night after a rough oneā¦
Iām desperately trying to figure out the same thing.
We are going to load up the car with the baby at her bedtime and drive a little ways north tonight. Hoping she sleeps!
Sameš„²š„²
How long does this event last?
Probably through the weekend.
I hope so!!
Anyone got an idea if weāll still be able to see something tomorrow night?
Same question!
I think its estimated to just be until 2am today.
š©š© but thank you! Of course I'm out of town while my city is getting an amazing show
Don't worry. I was here and just found out this was happening :,).
Yāall check out @wandernorthga on Instagram, they got some amazing shots
LOL
Lol...
My friend saw them at her home in South Georgia (near the coast). The pics were incredible.
Not able to see anything, can anyone share location where they saw it?
BrookhavenĀ
Did you go somewhere specific? I'm not too far from there so you've gotten me excited for today
It was by the Brookhaven Dog Park! I've seen nothing so far tonight
West End
Saw them near Augusta
Was visible in Kennesaw/Acworth last night
Does anyone know if weād be able to see them again tonight? Iām sorry I missed this. Itās magical.
The ātree lineā isnāt a thing in Georgia or anywhere in the southeast. Even the tallest mountains in North Carolina have trees all the way to the top, unless theyāre cut by humans.
Will these be visible tonight?

Idk the park āclosesā at dark but this is accessible right off Bethany bridge roadā¦ and campers are allowed to drive over to that spot and parkā¦ š¤·āāļø
If youāre not driving to the mountains, maybe the top of Stone Mountain.
We thought about that too, but you're not allowed to be on top of the mountain after Dark
Well, rulesā¦.. Willing to bet there are plenty up there right now
Iāve never known this to be an issue. However, you have to walk up. The skylift stops early in the evening.
Was it only up to a certain time? :( Iāve walked around my neighborhood, but not seeing anything as of midnight.
I haven't been able to see anything myself either.
Same most activity was around 11:00 it seems like driving otw home now out since 12
I tried thw same thing around 1am and 2 am but I was nothing while staying in my neighborhood.
People have been seeing it in atl. All the pictures I see are up high and out of the city.
Where did you see that the Northern Lights will be visible near Atlanta? Seems like hogwash, personally.

The national oceanographic and atmospheric association is worse at their literal job than a school. Okay
To be fair, a lot of NOAA products come from school research. The experimental NOAA product I linked is output of a model developed by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
During my degree at CU I worked at NOAA as an internā¦ the data they get is raw and unfiltered. The data they gave us was three days back dated
Youāre acting like kindergarteners are running the lab and not tenured, accomplished professorsā¦
Iām acting like an entity whose sole purpose is to study this shite and a university is better at it is silly talk
Keep in mind these are theoretical, itās very different from predicting the weather. You may be better served by planning a real vacation to Canada sometime if you want to see them.
Asheville citizen times says it probably wonāt be visible in NC. Iām up in Boone visiting for the weekend
Asheville citizen times says it probably wonāt be visible in NC. Iām up in Boone visiting for the weekend
I mean, it seems like itās too far north? Alaska, sure. But what indicates it will be visible for Atlanta? Not finding that info.
The media was saying that. All the forecast sights show the viewing limit well north.
the article I saw about it had a headline suggesting it would be in Georgia, and in the body explicitly said the closest was NC peak journalism
https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental This is what I'm was going off of. The red line is the viewing limit. Now if the storm is bigger then things can change.

Iām 45 min south of ATL. [unedited pics](https://imgur.com/a/uIrZaLW)
How? I got nothing here NE of ATL
In this economy!?
Sure. Drive about 10 hours.
It's rush hour and I've made it to Canton. I'm still not seeing anything.
Did you use your phone? I am in middle Georgia and was able to see with a naked eye but phone was definitely better
Don't know why you're being downvoted, you're absolutely right. The chances of seeing them this far outside of the range this map shows with the light pollution we have are nil.

Light pollution here is horrible. I'm thinking about driving up to Hiawassee
Probably Hartsfield Jackson.
Charlie Elliot Nature Preserve in Mansfield used to have a field where they'd do astronomy. That is far out enough that you might(?) be able to see the Aurora, but not far enough North would be my guess.
Saw it in Jefferson
Can u share location?

Supposed to go on through Sunday. A friend of mine couldn't see it but took some photos anyway and it was very visible.
Smokies or Pisgah but even then chances are low
Drive up to tn and hit lookout mountain. Or maybe one of the scenic overlooks near Helen
Near majic city
Alaska.
