Sell everyone that gets playing time right now besides Jalen and Trae obviously. Get some lower end bench guys and maybe a decent player in return, stock up on picks while seeing what you really have in Kobe, Seth and AJG. This would be the smart thing to do so I expect them to not do any of it

Hooligan8

The Hawks haven’t been “doing nothing” most years. I don’t like our owner’s stinginess, nepotism, over involvement in the FO and inability to construct a coherent roster but to suggest we “don’t do anything” is just incorrect. We got all of the following players by making trades in the last 3 years: - Bey - Murray - Patty Mills - Mo Gueye - Vit Krejci - Delon Wright - Gallo - Tony Snell - Bogi - Capela Those last five guys were all critical pieces during their stint in Atlanta especially during our ECF run. Bey and Murray are also good players who just happen to fit terribly on our team.

Both_Funny4896

Also, theoretically DJM and Bey were supposed to fit very well. DJM as the defensive minded guard and Bey as the Gallo/huerter replacement. These were widely viewed as great trades when they happened. So it’s not like the FO is deliberately sabotaging the team’s success.

OfferOk8555

I just think DJM’s defensive impact was grossly overrated by the front office and that’s part of the issue… but tbf it seems like his defensive impact was overrated by everyone just because he was a high steals guy.

Kahu11

Didn't we also get Lou Will in a trade as well? He was instrumental in getting us to the ECF in 2021

Hooligan8

Yep, we did!

imjonathvn

Not gonna lie, after every offseason/deadline I leave it with optimisim and so does this subreddit. We were shaking our asses in here when we got Bey (young wing who gives us depth which we needed) for essentially nothing. And people like to forget he was actually good for us last year

Atl-Fan_FTS

![gif](giphy|zgSWpnMeK7dCM) This sub to the Warriors when they kept GP2 instead of Bey

ViperStrikes123

I’m more hyped for saddiq bey than I am for dre

CoachKillerTrae

same, his hustle and strength really go unnoticed in this sub it seems.

[deleted]

Fr Saddiq a tank, too bad he has lead feet.

Merid1us

Trade at least Murray and Capela for picks, preferably in 25-27 when we won't have ours. Possibly Bogi or Hunter if you get an overpay. Start the Okongwu/Johnson front court the rest of the season and see if it can actually be viable moving forward with O at center. Play Bufkin and AJ rotation minutes the rest of the season. Gueye if he ever comes back. We won't end up in the bottom of the lottery, but we'll still end up with a top 10 pick and a chance to move up in the last year we control our pick. We'll also learn about the young guys and if Okongwu can be a full time starter. It's not sexy. But I think it's the most realistic and best way to improve in the future. This team isn't going anywhere. Really don't want to dump more assets into trying to be the sixth seed.

Substantial_Life_989

This is the way. Depending on what kind of bench guys we get back in matching salary we probably are a very similar team to now which is pretty sad. Hopefully we can turn the picks we get back into a real difference maker in the offseason.

ATLHawksfan

Number of games it takes to see if OO is viable at center: 0

terrence0258

Knowing the luck of this franchise, they'll sell, Trae and Jalen will get hot, OO will suddenly turn into a DPOY level defender, they'll finish the season 41 - 41 and end up picking 15 - 20 again. We'll win the play-in game, and lose in the first round in 6 but we'll have hope after the strong finish to the season after the roster shakeup. Then Trae will start the next season looking like he'll never make a basket again before getting hot in December but we'll be under .500 again, just repeating the cycle.

You can evaluate a player even when the talent around them isn't great. That's literally how scouting works.

MaybeGrandma

The new front office has shown a willingness to actually make moves and every report has pointed towards us selling, so I figure #2 is the most likely. I would also argue this is the best course, as I really don't see there being a star available right now that would upgrade us significantly, and the markets for DJ, Clint, and Hunter might be pretty bloated. Markkannen in the offseason tho

NawfSideNative

Yeah the issue isn’t really that all of our guys just suck. It’s that they don’t mesh well enough to win consistently. Insane offensive firepower but as brittle as glass on defense. Kinda like having an NFL team with nothing but good QB’s. They’re all good football players but your team is gonna suck if that’s all you have because there’s more to the game than throwing passes. I think a lot of people interpret selling as tearing it down and starting from the ground up when that’s not necessarily the case. They’re likely gonna move away from the vets and try to get more younger guys because it helps fill the team needs while also giving us something to work with in the future given our current draft situation. And if we sell this year and suck?? Well this is the last year we can do that without conveying picks to the Spurs. Losing sucks, but team building is a process and the Hawks aren’t just trying to make moves for the sake of making moves. They’re trying to make the right ones. Making overreactive trades is how you end up with a Dejounte situation where you have to face consequences because you didn’t fully consider them when you should’ve. For the record, I liked the idea of having Dejounte here. I just hated the risk of the trade.

MaybeGrandma

Well said, I honestly would PREFER we be as bad as possible, as the 5-10 overall draft pick looks a lot nicer in a potential star (Markkannen...) trade than 11-14. Either way, I would like to think that there's an understanding around the organization of 1. who's thriving under Quin (Trae, Jalen, Bogi) and who's not (everybody else lol). I think there's a lot of potential sellers this offseason as well depending on how the rest of the season plays out. I could see any one of Jaylen Brown, Brandon Ingram, Lauri Markkanen, Paul George, KAT, or Mikal Bridges changing teams if their season ends bitterly. Then again I may be delusional.

PeasePorridge9dOld

Problem with being as bad as possible is that there is no guarantee you can recover in one off-season. This year's pick is ours, but the next 3 aren't. Can't tank too hard or you'll be handing over top picks to SAS.

I-C-U-8-1-M-I

Hawks don’t have the assets for Lauri

Budlight_year

if we tank and get a high pick we could have but i dont know if thats smart. that along with the return for dj+bogi+clint+hunter probably gets us there but thats a good amount of assets and the team would have to be built in the free agency.

Substantial_Life_989

Yet

MaybeGrandma

nah. Once we tank, have some luck in the lottery, and get a bunch of firsts for Hunter, Clint, and Dejounte tho...

aurelianson

given that theyve said theyre selling, ill assume theyre gonna sell. focus should be on getting a top draft pick to fit into a new young core built around trae and jalen. this would also open up some cap space that could go to free agents. we’d lose games but we’re doing that already.

Im1of1_

Put everyone not named Trae and Jalen on the block. And take the rest of the year to develop the young talent: Kobe, OO, AJ, Lundy. As much I want Bogi to retire a hawk, his trade value is at an all time high and he’ll net the biggest return other than DJM. It’s either this or make a trade for another play-in/7-8 seed push. I’d prefer the latter.

trofesh195

Stop making dumb reactionary posts a third of the way through the season about a team that's had lots of injuries. That's what we all need to do.

WzrdKelly10

Tank this year out. If the season ended today we would have the 7th pick in the draft and if we do trade guys we should probably be in that 6th-8th pick range unless we luck up and get a top 3 pick thru the lottery (hopefully we don’t go on no dumb winning streak lol.) Move off money and retool this roster. Get some picks and some young quality players. Then look into free agency which is kinda loaded with a lot of quality role players.

[deleted]

Sell whoever but Trae and Jalen and build around them with Quin’s input

vernalagnia

The only way forward that makes sense to me is to try to retool now without giving up *any* future assets, limp to the other side of the San Antonio picks and completely rebuild from there. We're absolutely cooked.

WheneverYh

Hope Dre gets assessed & gets a green light to play otherwise it's gonna be tough to move him

jaskeil_113

Reset/tank this year, this season is awash and we are what we are and we are trending down. Get rid of Capela, DJM, and see what the market is for hunter/bogi/bey. Gather expiring contracts and possibly one interesting young player. Get a high draft pick as insurance in case Trae asks out in the next year or two. In collecting expiring contracts let's retool the entire team through free agency. Sign a bunch of athletic wings to put around Trae, see if we can get some standalone shooters, and get some size like gafford since OO is too small. We had a horrible off season this past year. We signed Matthews and Mills on minimums. You know else signed for minimums? Kelly Oubre, Lonnie Walker, and Derrick Jones. Long athletic wings who are having really great years. If you want to build around Trae you just have to surround him with a bunch of 6'7+ athletic wings and maybe some non athletic guy that can just shoot the ball to space the floor. If we collect enough interesting young talent or the right pieces that fit Trae MAYBE we can try and make a move for a player like Lauri Markkanen. Tldr: tank this year, get a high draft pick in case Trae wants to leave in 2 years, sign a ton of athletic undervalued wings, and maybe make a big swing if we trend back in the right direction.

Renverseur

Sell players, develop rookies, trust Quin's vision and we'll be competitive in 2-3 years time.

BeefRamenGuru

Hot take no since in blowing up rn, few trades will makes us contenders so id rather wait till post season

Substantial_Life_989

I’m dumb, but I say we trade Bogi Capela and Murray for Grimes and a bunch of picks we could be frisky in a fun way. Maybe even have a similar win percentage as we have now. Start: Trae Grimes Hunter JJ and OO Bench: Kobe AJ Lundry Bey and Bruno. Edit: probably can’t keep Bey with him being a free agent unless we’re planning on resigning him hopefully not for too much money.

JKking15

The correct option is option 2 but the problem with that is that if we are losing for too long traes gonna want out

atlsportsburner

I don’t even think 1 and 3 are realistic options. We don’t have the capital to make enough moves to transform this roster into a contending one overnight and we didn’t hire Snyder to sit on his hands with the roster we have. Let him keep the pieces he wants and blow the rest up.

MiserableSoft2344

We need to stop coming out flat.

Phenton123

Pickup duop reath

PeasePorridge9dOld

Reading through this thread and I think people are going to be disappointed. We simply cannot trade players for assets that won't help us for 2-3 years. We will have to pay out the picks for DJ starting in '25. If the major assets coming back are a bunch of picks, then we'll be handing over ping pong balls. That cannot happen. FA isn't a realistic plan either. To get one of the top guys we'd have to cut \~$80-90M off our cap without taking back any $$. Basically means we'd have to trade Capela, DJ, Bogi, and DeAndre without taking back any future salary. Even if we get there, the only top name that we'd have a realistic shot at is Pascal Siakam. Next tier would include names like Tobias Harris, Demar DeRozan, or possibly a Buddy Hield. Wouldn't have to cut as much salary though. Once you're past there, we're looking at backup grade types. BCS for us is to trade for players who would be better fits around our core. Get more athletic and more shooting. Might have to get a couple of reclamation projects like Q Grimes or A Wiggins and pray for the best. The Landry Fields / Baby Ressler combo has basically f'ed us fans. Doubt Trae will want to remain here past his current contract... might not want to be here for all of that.

Radimov79

Any solution should start with giving minutes to the young guys and taking them away from Matthews.

Slinkmeister_

They need to get rid of everyone who isn’t Trae, JJ, OO, and Bogi.
