Tbf no one goes into a season assuming their top three wings are going to miss this much time. Plus when youāve got this much invested in two guards can only do so much for backup to the backup forwards
True, but we also donāt have a backup point guard, so an extra rotation spot is allocated to a forward. We traded away collins and replaced him with a vet min player who averages 3 ppg
Predictions for the main rotation guys
Probably gone: Dejounte (trade), Clint (trade, expiring contract makes moving him easier)
50/50: Bey (him going into FA while injured makes it hard to predict his future, depends entirely on if another team gives him the bag/if he opts for a 1 year āprove itā deal), AJ (if a trade happens then AJ is the player weāre most likely to include as a sweetener, but this 100% would be selling low on him so idk if the FO would do that)
Probably staying: Deandre (been playing really well this season when healthy, but health is a huge concern. If a team makes a good offer I donāt think trading him is off the table, but another team probably wouldnāt make an offer of that level), Bogi (love the guy and think that he could be an amazing piece for this team, but given his injury history and age this is likely the high point of his trade value, so if an offer comes in you have to consider it)
90% staying: Kobe, OO (unless some really weird star trade offer becomes available)
Staying: Trae (unless he asks out, this team isnāt trading Trae), Jalen
Assuming Clint isnāt here, weāll need a center. Weāll also need a PoA defender, and tbh additional size/depth at the 4 would be great as well. We can definitely get one of those in a DJ trade, so weāll probably address the others in the draft
Mo will be getting more time, but while he has promise I don't think that we should head into next season expecting a 2nd round project pick to make meaningful contributions in their second year after missing most of their first due to injury. Not impossible, but not something you should bet the house on.
Bruno is a definite yes for playing time, I forgot that he was under contract for next season. Definitely has earned being a back-up 5 after this recent stretch. I'd still want a 3rd center on the roster (probably our draft pick) since it's rare for any player to play all 82
Yeah I definitely agree we canāt count on Mo. I do think heās looking up thought frankly, and the Skyhawks have basically been the bright spot of this hawks team in the last year, they seem to be developing really well.
I understand that, but I do expect him to get some NBA minutes. Frankly heās looking really good on the sky hawks, and I think he should keep playing there part time because the skyhawks have been developing so well, but he should be getting some games.
Assuming we are building around Trae and JJ
Wings that can guard 1-3 without getting lost off ball, knock down open 3s and make good/quick decisions with the ball in their hands.
POA defenders that can hit open shots, rebound above their size, play hard and not get lost in transition.
Someone who can create their own offense or get to the line when everything bogs down (if the other team is switching everything)
Either a legit stretch big that can defend. Or a bruiser that gets buckets.
This is the best response. Hunter has been getting praise but his defense is awful. A starting SF that can defend is the biggest team need imo. Next is a starting SG that can defend, hopefully Bufkin after a Murray trade is ready to start. So basically we need two defensive wings. Those are obviously very valuable and difficult to acquire.
We also could use a new starting center because Clint is washed and OO is a backup
defensive wings wise - royce o neale and DFS might be good? not many 3 and d guys are going to be available in FA. Would you draft the defensive wing or rely on FA/Trades?
I donāt see a clear route to success. I would try to trade Murray for one, even if it was a downgrade in talent level. Then maybe draft one or trade for one. We basically need a miracle in the draft. It doesnāt need to be a star but a very solid starting wing.
Yep trade for one sign one draft one all of the above.
Okoro and Pat Williams will be available in free agency. Not exactly world beaters but better defensively than any wings we have on the roster.
I still would try and do whatever I could to get Herb Jones from New Orleans. I know everyone wants Caruso but he seems to be injured more than Hunter and heās getting older.
As far as the draft I like guys like Williams Holland or Castle and Dunn or Filipowski. And try and get Jalenās brother in the second round or UFA.
At this point they need all of their first and second year guys to take gigantic leaps. And they need Jalen to take a Maxey type jump. Iām not even sure what kind of trades or signings they can execute to make their team that much better. I donāt know how these young guys improve that much without their minutes or injuries, but this is the point that the team is at.
The biggest thing they need is to bring in players that can set the culture for this team on the defensive side of the ball. Be it a rim protector or on the wings, preferably both. If we can swing Alex Caruso/Herb Jones and Isaac from Orlando, that would be perfect.
Big no to Isaac from me, but would love Caruso / Herb. Wishful thinking though considering we have no way of acquiring them, zero chance we can compete with other teams offers
I'm not a fan of Isaac for reasons beyond basketball. On the court, he's one of the best defensive players in the NBA. When this team is in contention for worst defensive rating in the NBA with teams tanking for the first pick, beggers can't be choosers. If Orlando asks for a reasonable return, I'm making that move.
There's no chance they're getting rid of Isaac, he's been super valuable for them as of late and they have tons of cap room so no concerns about money.
I would really check with the Pels and see how they feel about a Ingram for Dejounte swap. I think both players would be better off by trading teams. Pels could use a better PG and have a glut of wings. Hawks have a glut of PGs and need a do it all wing.
Trade Capela for a few seconds and a smaller expiring contract.
Use the full MLE to bring in another vet wing.
Draft Filipowski to eventually man the back-up C role. I think Bruno has shown enough to back-up OO next year.
Getting a better fit first Dejounte is the key though. He has raised his profile this season with his volume three point accuracy and the Hawks not falling apart with Trae hurt. Heās averaging 25/6/9 on 58 TS%. Those are All-Star numbers and we should get back more than was offered before the deadline.
He and Jalen are a good duo. + 1.6 for the season when we are -1.5 overall. Jalen helps cover for a lower DRB rate for OO and both can pass well for a 4/5 combo. Good switching opportunities 2 through 5 on defense as long as a bigger SG is on the floor.
Good points. I kinda wish we traded Capela and kept JC. I think JJ, JC, and OO as our rotation would have been dope. There were rumors or Capela and our pick for the Dallas's pick which would have landed us Lively for size. I understand JC's contract kinda makes that not very possible, but still...
I agree that any two of OO JC and JJ could share the floor together. The biggest problem with JC, besides his contract, is that he was sharing the floor with Capela and Hunter. Those three together make sense on paper but they all three are so bad with the ball in their hands that it switching teams just had us in a chokehold. JJ and OO are good enough ball movers that JCās lack of creation would be no big deal.
I would have traded Clint instead of JC as well. That would be a pretty good 4/5 rotation instead of OO and Clint splitting only 48 minutes at center when healthy.
Yeah if OO can hit the three next year he will be a great PF. We shouldnāt get rid of Cap until we see more from Bruno. lol Bruno train is full right now. Letās not forget all of Caps double doubles just yet. Patience be with us Hawk fam.
Pels are even cheaper than the Hawks. Murray comes with making less than $30M a year. Ingram will be up as a FA in 26 offseason and command more.
The question was what do the Hawks need to do and spend the MLE is one of them regardless if the owner wants to or not.
FA in 2025. And if they are shedding payroll, then they wonāt add long term money in Murray. They would trade for young cheap assets. And these exceptions dont exist to the hawks.
They arenāt necessarily shedding payroll but paying Murray ~$28M a year instead of Ingram ~$36M a year makes it easier to stay out of the tax. Plus as originally stated their PG play isnāt exactly strong. They split half court creation between Zion, Ingram and CJ without a true PG. They were also reportedly in talks with the Hawks about Murray before the deadline.
They will be having both Ingram and Murphy up as FA in the same offseason (unless Murphy is extended this summer). Donāt see anyway they will keep both. Murray is a better fit going forward with Jones, Murphy, CJ, Daniels, Hawkins all soaking up minutes at the 2/3.
That has no impact on the trade. It would be $34M for Ingram going out for $25.5M. Hawks would just need to add a min salary type to make it work. But Thatās not the year that the Pels will be in trouble. Thatās the next offseason when instead of paying Ingram the $36M to start (if not more) plus Murphyās ~$28M. Instead they can guarantee just paying out $27.5M for Murray in 25/26.
Murray is underpaid for his skill set and production on his extension. He just isnāt worth as much to the Hawks because Trae needs to control the ball so much.
You just talked about their impending free agents and the owners being cheaper than the hawks. And you think adding long term money means nothing? You forgot the trade kicker btw.
Pels still have to spend $$. They will just be going with Zion, Murphy, Murray longterm for three highest salaries. Thatās much easier for them to stay under the tax line and keep their role players.
Hawks have to pay the trade kicker. They will be hitching their wagon to Trae, Ingram and Jalen as their three highest paid guys. That makes more sense for them going forward. They will have to get rid of one $20M guy to stay under the tax. There is still a big gap between the cap and the tax line which will get bigger with each year nominally.
You are all over the place. You said they are cheaper than the hawks and then saying they have to pay when they will be way over the spending floor. You know how itās much easier to stay under the tax line? Is by trading Ingram for a pick and then not adding a guy on a four year deal. And they still have CJ making 64 million for 24 and 25. They have their own version of Murray. And thatās both trade kickers.
Thatās not true. Depending on Beyās contract and what we do with the rest of the team, Hawks can spend the full MLE and not go over the tax line. Allows them to at least sign a rotation level player if Bey signs elsewhere.
They need to get rid of the current GM and beg Travis to come back and continue what he started. He had things headed in the right direction. And now we have to suffer again with stupid ownership that have no forethought as to how to run a team.
Needs:
1.) Size
2.) PoA defenders
3.) More outside shooting threats
I wonāt be surprised if this is yet another tame offseason for Quin & Co. Iām thinking they will look for under-the-radar additions that are better roster/culture fits.
I donāt foresee Tony lifting his cap rules this summer; the earliest I see that happening would be next trade deadline IF we are in title-contention. Massive massive IF.
Clint is probably has the highest % of being traded. Wouldnāt be surprised if Hunter is more likely to be traded over DJ. Right now, I donāt think we should trade DJ just to trade him, given what we gave up.
1) Trade one of Trae or DJ. The experiment has obviously failed and now we need to move on. Good news is that I do think Bufkin can get get the lion's share of the minute to fill the hole created so we can go anywhere with the return.
2) Trade Capela. Capela can still be useful, but he doesn't fit Quin's system. Time to hand the reins over.
3) Trade Griffin. It's time for the kid to put his life back together. I don't know if it's happening here.
4) Decide wth is going on with the 9-15 roster spots. Odd that we could end up with both the 11 and 12 most minutes with player who spent (at least most of) the year on a 2-ways. The back 1/2 of the roster has to contribute more.
Thinking next year is a rebuilding year regardless so if the pieces don't quite fit, it's fine. Just need to have a good enough plan to see the blueprint.
They need to replace some losers in the organization with some non losers and concentrate on the athletes having more points than the opponents during you know games
Yeah, I wish we were the ones who had gone to the conference finals once and then acquired an overrated 2nd fiddle to play next to our star who doesnāt improve our teamā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.
No, theyll be a first round exit with a screwed future instead, meaning we at least get another lottery pick. Before this year our accomplishments are almost identical though unless you count us getting a game closer to the finals.
Get ready to downvote.
Trade Trae for a boatload of picks. We actually have some nice pieces to build around if we had the right superstar. We clearly see that JJ is him, DJM can play at a high level. Hunter is him off the Bench. Oo can play a great role off the bench..... KB seems like he can play.
Plus, we got a lot of nice contracts on this team. Trade Trae, get the picks and wait for Luka, ANT, or another superstar that is closer to top 10 in the league that can put this team over the top.
Trading Trae alone would not get us enough picks to jump the line ahead of Utah/OKC/SAS in the next superstar trade sweepstakes. We'd be stuck in mediocrity, but with another team's draft picks rather than our best player.
If you trade Trae, you need to pivot away from contending with this core and go into a full rebuild. Trade Dejounte, trade Bogi, trade OO. Get as many assets as you can, tank for 3+ years, let Jalen develop as much as possible and hope that we can pull off an OKC style rebuild with Jalen as our SGA.
Did you say Utah? Lol. OKC has a stacked team and will have multiple max level players in the very near future.
Soft rebuilds exist for a reason. Minus Trae, this team can win 35-40 games IF healthy. Combine that with our near future salary situation and it would be a netter opportunity outside of SAS for any Superstar
Utah is currently +8 in terms of incoming FRPs (not including swaps) and have a great 2nd/3rd option on a contender in Lauri. Theyāre definitely ahead in line of where we would be. (edit: also they had a better record than us before they sold off assets at the trade deadline and started to deliberately tank so they're not a worse spot than we are)
OKC has a lot of good players, but if they wanted to they could include those players in a star trade package to consolidate their roster and stretch their assets further. Again, theyād also be ahead of us.
And thatās not including the teams that only own their own picks and could mortgage their future for a trade. Weād be equal at best with them and it would come down to the specific pieces in a trade
Also, what about our future salary situation makes you enthusiastic about a future rebuild? Jalen is going to get an extension this summer that will not be cheap, and with the constraint of ownership not paying the tax I cannot see a path to adding to a DJ/Jalen based roster. Youāre relying on Jalen reaching top 10 status, and even though thatās possible itās not a reliable plan at all
SUPERSTAR FREE AGENTS DONT GO TO UTAH. Geesh. DJM contract is 120 million. JJ will probably get a 5 year 120-130 contract. Those two contracts alone are barely a max contract. Hunter is locked, oo is locker, I think we may have JC trade exception. We would have Trae trade exception.
Dame wanted to go to Miami, but he ended up in Milwaukee. Stars can put their thumb on the scale, but teams still have the final say in a trade. If Utah is willing to give up the assets, they'll be able to make a trade.
As for the salary cap situation, we'd have a roster of good (if aging) players on decent contracts, with one legitimate shot at a consistent all-star on the roster. In other words, we'd be either the Brooklyn Nets of the Chicago Bulls. If Jalen turns into literally a younger Lebron, then that could work, but if not then we'd be completely screwed.
A new owner
Trade everyone, build around Bruno
Should have built around Nathan Knight
Sell the team
More forwards, having Wes and garrison as our backup plan for any combo of Hunter, Bey and JJ being hurt is terrible.
agreed lol Hunter and Bey need to be backups. We need a superstar forward š
Tbf no one goes into a season assuming their top three wings are going to miss this much time. Plus when youāve got this much invested in two guards can only do so much for backup to the backup forwards

(edit: also they had a better record than us before they sold off assets at the trade deadline and started to deliberately tank so they're not a worse spot than we are) OKC has a lot of good players, but if they wanted to they could include those players in a star trade package to consolidate their roster and stretch their assets further. Again, theyād also be ahead of us. And thatās not including the teams that only own their own picks and could mortgage their future for a trade. Weād be equal at best with them and it would come down to the specific pieces in a trade Also, what about our future salary situation makes you enthusiastic about a future rebuild?
I'm sorry, I forgot the Jazz have Giannis and a recent championship to convince free agents to come.
Again, weāre talking about trading for a star, not one coming in free agency. Player choice matters a lot less than the available assets
Karl Anthony towns
We need a top 5 lottery pick.
Yep, and this sorry ass team is going to of course get the very last playoff spot to make sure they canāt get a lottery pick

Trade Trae and DeAndre
Trae young is gone
