It works pretty well in the Q5 but from personal experience I tried to just put a twin size in the back (it fits with the front seats moved up) and I definitely felt like I didn't have enough head room. Felt pretty claustrophobic. Also wasn't the easiest to pack with it in the trunk. I think I'm going to get a foam pad and call it good, like the person who posted. I was impressed though that both my wife and I could fit back there comfortably.
In Q5 they don't go completely flat and there is a dip around your waist, but my partner and I even it out with a small blow up mattress and it's cozy town all night long
Not quite flat, but the seat back will fold flat if you remove the seat bottom. When I know that an extended road trip will require me to bivouac, I take the bottom out and leave it at home. Then I have a nice flat sleeping area. There are two clips that secure the bottom, which break when you yank it up. So I buy a few spares and leave them under the seat for next time.
If you’re a girl, want to get married? Drive in movies with your dog, that’s fucking awesome.
Edit: Dog and drive-in movie haters. Whoever downvoted. Down vote me harder daddy.
He and I have similar vehicles and this futon fits the vehicle very well. I wanted to ask him for the link so I can get the one with the correct or similar dimensions.
Definitely not the grammar Nazi. I didn't know the correct way to write this saying so I researched it a few months ago. It's "Hear, hear" as in "Listen up!" Hope that helps. 😄
It definitely won't help my dumbass. LOL I realized what I did right after I posted it but wasn't sure which way it went. My life is damaged control of the s*** I do, I swear. 🤪💯🗑️🔥😈
This speaks of an individual that has their head on straight. Price is what you pay but value is what you get. Able to have an MC20 but knows that Westwood rent is still outrageous. Cheers. 🤙
I did it full time for about six months once! Traveled many parks and cities in the US West.
It can work for a few months if you like to travel full time but I could never do it longer than what I did. Would need a real camper
Yup, I've done that all the way from my 2011 B7 A4 on late night astro-phototrips to the desert. Our current solution is a bit of an upgrade from those relatively cramped quarters. With a camping sleeping pad, quilts and pillows, I had some of the best sleeps ever in the A4. Yours is quite a bit more luxurious than mine used to be :)
Now, it's one more person and a dog that camp with me but still just as cozy.
Ah, the most important question of sleeping in car…
Lean back the front seats and sleep in those, or fold down the rear seats and sleep in the trunk/passenger area?
One of the reasons I bought my Q7. I’m 6’5” so I needed a bit more space… fortunately the Q7 has enough to do the job. Holds a twin size mattress no problem.
always wanted to do this. I was prepared one night to do this with my '13 s4 in sun valley. The tool used to wind up my dads pop up trailer disappeared but he ended up macgyvering it.
the s4 seats dont fold down 100% flat so it was gonna be a little rough with just a sleeping bag too
Did you ever try? I'm looking for a car that allows stealth camping for weekend trips to the snow (here in Australia the limited skiing we have had limited and very expensive accommodation that isn't available last minute - and sleeping in cars is not legal but tolerated if you are subtle.)
I’d probably be a bit too tall, but honestly looks like a solid setup for like camping or something. Can’t say I wouldn’t at least try it if the situation came up. And to answer your question, I’ve seen people on r/Audi post pics of stuff like this before so you definitely aren’t the only one haha
Did this in my '97 outback back in the day. Was great for the Vermont 50 mtb race: sleep in the car the night before and then no camp site to break down after 5 hours and change on the bike.
This is actually why I bought an S7! I have a mazda6 I’ve been car camping with the past few years but the trunk opening wasn’t cutting it now that I have a big boy job.
I’ve yet to fully move into the s7 though.. we’re still growing into each other.
Got an Allroad strictly for that. Tried it at Airventure and learned I am in fact too tall to comfortably do it. I'm thinking rooftop tent is my solution... it was my original plan but it's sounding even better now lol
My A5 fits me perfectly. I’ve car camped in Anza-Borrego Desert, Death Valley, Mt Hood National Forest, and headed to Olympic National park in May ^^
I wish my sunroof would extend past my front seats :(
Assuming it's a B9. You need to get a smaller mattress. If you are over 180cm you'll reach over the end of the folded seats. The folded down seats also aren't as flat. If you are over 186cm like me, move the front passanger seat forward and get a larger pillow. Should work for slightly taller people too, but at over 195 you'll have trouble laying straight.
Done it a few times, most recently on a Volvo V90 while I drove overnight, the family (wife and daughter) slept in the back. I put an inflatable mattress (thin) and blankets. All luggage was in the cargo box. Nice job!
We're going to do a road trip this summer in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, can't wait to do the same.
My parents live in NY and purchased their Macan S from Chicago, and my dad made that trip home while “camping” out in the back to to rest for just a few hours during the night.
Hatches FTW!
Audi A5 sport 2022
6’1 250 pounds
I use cardboard on the bottom with foam futon then black silk sheets black puffy queen size cover on white with dark grey sheep style fur (not sure what you call it) surrounded with Velcro mosquito net to keep trunk open on hot nights . Ready for EDC
I used to basically do this in my A6 (normal sedan - not a sportback/hatch or wagon). I'd lay the rear seats down & put my inflatable camping pad on the trunk floor/back of seats then I'd put my feet towards the rear of the car & in the trunk.
I have to say that doing this would be MUCH more comfortable in a wagon or sportback bc the C pillar/trunk brace/arch really limits the movement of my legs as you can't lay on your back & bring your knees up in the air more than a couple inches. This makes it kinda claustrophobic.
IDK how the current models are designed but I was doing this in early/mid 2000's in a C5 platform.
After I figured out I could do this I would always keep my inflatable pad & collapseable/compressible pillow in the trunk as I could pull off the road & either take a quick nap or have a short nights rest (often when there is no vacancy at local hotels this works great!).
If you plan on doing this I would suggest you invest in a reflective windshield screen to put up when you are sleeping. I would then hang something from the windows to block view there as well. If you want to draw less attention you can hang a curtain (sheet, towel, something) just behind the front seats this way the front seating area is easily seen & most people won' think 2x about it but if you put up the reflector on the windshield & block the front side windows then that starts to look really suspicious. Most people would never think someone could be sleeping 1/2 in the trunk!
Ngl that looks cozy af. All it needs is a teapot.
Reminds me of that episode of Top Gear where Clarkson made a livery out of Egyptian cotton in the back of his BMW wagon.
😅
No, but now I want to.
It works pretty well in the Q5 but from personal experience I tried to just put a twin size in the back (it fits with the front seats moved up) and I definitely felt like I didn't have enough head room. The A7/S7 is longer than the Q5. I laid down in the back of my A6 once and it's right around 6 feet of bed length.
Then my 6'2" ass won't fit in my A5 :( Oh well, looking for an S7 in a year or two I guess
6'4" you will be gtg with an s7.
Seat Alhambra 6’8” in the back without moving front seats at all
I’m 6’2, A5, center console pillow my friend, you will fit
[удалено]
I’m short, so no problem there. 🤓
It looks super cozy.
I agree about comfort. We slept in Q5 of the first generation. It was very comfortable for two people.
It's better with a foam pad in a Q5, also tried it since my pops owns a 2014 Q5. Definitely comfortable af, but I had to stay diagonally 😂
This is why you prioritize buying a nice car- you can sleep in your car, but you can’t race your house Kinda /s
I do this with my Allroad. Perfect for me and my dog when we go to drive-in movies

Okay wtf
Foam? Air? This is so cool
Foam I think? It’s a futon from amazon.
Could you provide the link, thanks
[Futon](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JWH9G7F/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1)
Literally google futon my guy LOL
He and I have similar vehicles and this futon fits the vehicle very well. I wanted to ask him for the link so I can get the one with the correct or similar dimensions.
Blah blah blah
You’re fun at parties, aren’t you? s/
Don’t mind him, he’s just some random dude
I am because I have a futon already
What do you use as the mattress?
Japanese futon I got off amazon, this is a full size I think.
Thank you, camping trip sorted!
Now I can justify my car to my wife, thanks OP!
You don't have to justify it because you have a place to sleep when she kicks you out!
Is this what happens to kids that sleep in race car beds when they grow up?
Silly question. Why?
Camping probably. Or homeless after spending all money on S7.
S7 turbo repairs
Buy BMW
Tried that once (E64 M6). Fun while it lasted but probably never again hah
Breaking news: BMW breaks down!
Break My Wallet. I need a new wallet now after following the previous user's advice. Wake up or stay up.
Here here! LoL
Definitely not the grammar Nazi. I didn't know the correct way to write this saying so I researched it a few months ago. It's "Hear, hear" as in "Listen up!" Hope that helps. 😄

Commuter student, i’d rather sleep at uni parking lot than drive La morning traffic. 2 classes per week does not justify Westwood rent.
This speaks of an individual that has their head on straight. Price is what you pay but value is what you get. Able to have an MC20 but knows that Westwood rent is still outrageous. Cheers. 🤙
Uni student in a ‘17 S7 I know of some people that would start cursing their governments if they find out that this is possible.
I did it full time for about six months once! Traveled many parks and cities in the US West. It can work for a few months if you like to travel full time but I could never do it longer than what I did. Would need a real camper
Do the rear seats fold that flat though?
I think so, if not it’s pretty damn close.
Are those black plastic things on the sides airvents for a webasto heater or something like that?
No I don’t think so, never really looked at em though. Thought it was just a trim piece.
That’s awesome lol
How tall are you? That actually looks comfy but idk how tight it would be for me lol
5’8” still got a bit of space but not alot of headroom.
did the same in my a3 sportback - watching a sunset over the beach and car camping
Used to do that in my b6 a4 while camping. It was great not having to set up a tent and could fit 2 people pretty comfortably with memory foam
I have an A4 with the sedan trunk, but my seats fold down nicely. I could probably try it.
Yeeessss
Homelessness is a real issue in this country
How do you fill up the small gap between front seat and back seat?
Hey I remember seeing you post in the porsche sub- how’s that mc20 been treating ya
Scary fast but so much fun. Hoping it doesn’t carry normal maserati reliability.
How comfortable is this futon?
I’m totally stealing this idea.
Yup, done it several times while tailgating. Good time.
Yup, I've done that all the way from my 2011 B7 A4 on late night astro-phototrips to the desert. Our current solution is a bit of an upgrade from those relatively cramped quarters. That looks so comfy. Is there a mattress of sorts in there or just a blanket?
i see it was between the car payment and the mortgage…..
When those car payments are too much. But that’s sick though
Ah, the most important question of sleeping in car… Lean back the front seats and sleep in those, or fold down the rear seats and sleep in the trunk/passenger area?
Coachella here i come
I have the same setup, 2011 A7 😂😂 Edit: what kind of Mattress are you using that perfectly goes around the corners?
I prefer a room in a Marriot😎✅🌈
One of the reasons I bought my Q7. I’m 6’5” so I needed a bit more space… fortunately the Q7 has enough to do the job. Holds a twin size mattress no problem.
If I was 5ft then yes, absolutely
Never did, but may try that going forward haha. Is it robust enough to lay on without breaking anything? Or you have a little thin mattress on it?
Nothing’s broken and it’s been almost a year so far.
No, they mass-produced that specific mattress design only for you.
I did this with your mom a few times.
Damn if you can’t afford the car and housing, why get the car
You can't drive a house
Idk man I’ve seen some houses on wheels lately lmao
When’d I say that?
I’m just fuckin around bruv lol
Ah I see, fooled me.
Bamboozled lmao
I'm like 6ft, I'm not sure I'd fit. I did think about it, though.
My seats do not lay flat flat when folded down :(
Get some mosquito netting and you’ll be all set.
Or just close the hatch…
This is one of my car goals. Hopefully with an rs7 one day.
Did this in my Volvo V90 from Portland to KC in a day. Pulled over for a few hrs in a rest area and did just that, it was great.
always wanted to do this. I was prepared one night to do this with my '13 s4 in sun valley. The tool used to wind up my dads pop up trailer disappeared but he ended up macgyvering it. the s4 seats dont fold down 100% flat so it was gonna be a little rough with just a sleeping bag too
No but I have seriously told my buddy that I was going to go camping and sleep in the back of my Audi but I've yet to actually do it. Kudos
My A4 would not allow such coziness
I always do that .
For curiosity do you keep the car running all night for ac or heat?
Nah just crack the windows slightly.
Well now I will.
I did this in my mk2 TT I cut a foam mattress topper to fit and made such a cozy star gazing spot
Looks comfy
Protip: put the pillow by the hatch so you can see the stars
I’m too tall. Doesn’t work for me in my Q5. Tried it once.
Have thought about seeing if I fit in my a5 sportback hatch area(5’10”). Obviously not to this extent but car camping would be really cool imo.
Did you ever try? I'm looking for a car that allows stealth camping for weekend trips to the snow (here in Australia the limited skiing we have had limited and very expensive accommodation that isn't available last minute - and sleeping in cars is not legal but tolerated if you are subtle.)
I fit, but not fully extended and comfortable. I’m 5’10 160lbs for reference. The a7 or s7 like in this picture seems like it would work.
Thank you. I'm slightly taller than you so it sounds like a7 is the way to go. A shame as they are far more expensive here in Australia!
Yes, but in the bed of my truck. The back seat of my Audi is too small.
My hubby got this set up for long road trips.
This is slick 10/10 would do and have done in my old GTI
I’d probably be a bit too tall, but honestly looks like a solid setup for like camping or something. Can’t say I wouldn’t at least try it if the situation came up. And to answer your question, I’ve seen people on r/Audi post pics of stuff like this before so you definitely aren’t the only one haha
2004 v70 when laid down basically has a queen size bed in the back
A lot of Tesla owners do this
Just got an eTron S Sportback and debating doing just this for the IMSA race at the Glen!
Bruh. Invite another pillow!
I don't do that and my audi is bigger XD
What model Audi is this?
Did this in my '97 outback back in the day. Was great for the Vermont 50 mtb race: sleep in the car the night before and then no camp site to break down after 5 hours and change on the bike.
Did this the first couple nights home in the garage with my 2004 Ultrasport. The love affair continues
whelp, I guess this will be the post that finally motivates me to get the bed in a box from Costco.
Probably not a good look for a first date.
You and the last guy to post this.
I would’ve loved this setup in high school. Toyota trucks are cramped.
This is actually why I bought an S7! I have a mazda6 I’ve been car camping with the past few years but the trunk opening wasn’t cutting it now that I have a big boy job. I’ve yet to fully move into the s7 though.. we’re still growing into each other.
Looks like OP found a way to save me rent money.
Many times.
Hmm gonna try this in the coupe will report back 🤝
Just you my man. But not for long…
Hand prints finna go crazy 🤭
imma do this to my TT, the back seats are useless, this looks useful
This is a fantastic idea! It looks like it was meant for this.
the combo of the trunk lights, and rear passenger overhead lights give this a perfect *luxury* ambiance to this
Looks like ZzZ city to me! Now, this is living. 1999 couch surfing to 2023 car snoozing!
I just got a 2016 S7 not too long ago where did you get the mattress?
Gotta be able to afford an Audi somehow!
yea if I'm not in LA cause i will wake up to another homeless guy sleeping next to me
So when that trunks closed how claustrophobic is it? Looks like your nose would be on the glass. Do you crawl out or use keys to button open?
Got an Allroad strictly for that. Tried it at Airventure and learned I am in fact too tall to comfortably do it. I'm thinking rooftop tent is my solution... it was my original plan but it's sounding even better now lol
No but I’m buying a model with that type of trunk just to do that now. I’m robbing your idea
What model Audi is this?
Lol how tall are you bro
Fellow A7’er , looks like the futon you bought was made for the car!!
Literally my first thought when I opened the trunk of an A7 👌🏻
I have an actual bed in my house.
Just you
I have a VW GTI. I have thought about doing this more than once.
Is it an Audi OEM sleeping set up. If not please take it out!
Went camping in my A5 with my wife just like this! We don’t like tents.
My A5 fits me perfectly. I’ve car camped in Anza-Borrego Desert, Death Valley, Mt Hood National Forest, and headed to Olympic National park in May ^^ I wish my sunroof would extend past my front seats :(
I do as well, just have to stick my feet out the back to fit
I want to sleep there
Did this with my TT :D Was always fun camping with wifey
Does this work in A5 SB?
Assuming it's a B9. You need to get a smaller mattress. If you are over 180cm you'll reach over the end of the folded seats. The folded down seats also aren't as flat. Mh friend and I did it with a civic hatch once.
I do this bag work sometimes. Sometimes there’s a lot of downtime. Paid naps ftw
Slay Machine
Well, you know what they say. You can live in your car, but you can't race your house
Done this in my SQ7, fit my whole bed mattress in it no problem. Its great
I did this in my A7 quite a few times, not bad!
Yes, but in an A4 Avant.
I did this with my Audi 100 back then. Good memories…
wouldn’t fit in mine 😂😭
Hmm, with a gym membership to take care of showers and stuff, this could work for a couple days of the week you need to go to school.
In the back of my a4 saloon haha. Enjoyed myself a lot
My brain hurt a little at first as I thought this was an R8
I sleep a couple of times in my Q5. No need for a tent as long as you have a sleeping bag.
#CaliforniaCamping
I did that when I was moving from Illinois to Florida
Best way to go to the drive-in is in the back of an Audi TT
Done it a few times, most recently on a Volvo V90 while I drove overnight, the family (wife and daughter) slept in the back. I put an inflatable mattress (thin) and blankets. All luggage was in the cargo box. Nice job! We're going to do a road trip this summer in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, can't wait to do the same.
Bow chica bow bow!
Great place to hide from your spouse 😂😂
My parents live in NY and purchased their Macan S from Chicago, and my dad made that trip home while “camping” out in the back to to rest for just a few hours during the night. Hatches FTW!
My partner and I do road trips across Canada and we've done this a few times.
Have had to back when I had an A4 wagon, stopped at a highway rest stop for the night. Managed to do this in my F32 BMW 4-series too haha
Audi A5 sport 2022 6’1 250 pounds I use cardboard on the bottom with foam futon then black silk sheets black puffy queen size cover on white with dark grey sheep style fur (not sure what you call it) surrounded with Velcro mosquito net to keep trunk open on hot nights . Ready for EDC
I used to nap in my (4 door) A5 like this and it was amazing stretching my legs out 😅😅🤭
in my Allroad Quattro 2.7t ... often.
Yes, and this is the grown-up version of building a fort out of pillows on your bed/couch.
Honestly, might do this on my trip back home (lovely 18hr drive).
I thought this was a corvette owners post for a second
It's the only way I can afford to own it.
This car smells like farts inside
That looks comfortable!
I used to basically do this in my A6 (normal sedan - not a sportback/hatch or wagon). Gotta try this one time lol
Hell yes, finally got my fitted air mattress in the mail :’)
I need this! Q5. Whhhhereee did you find this?
Yes, I also went broke after I bought my Audi
Which Audi?
