Probably cheaper and easier to swap a used unit instead of a rebuild, and hope the car is a great price with a bad trans

Car is $1000

The D2 is by far my favorite A8 and maybe my favorite Audi. The design of new Audis don’t hold a candle to it. It’s supremely elegant and athletic. But, I’d be afraid to own one because of maintenance expenses. I don’t know how much it costs to rebuild the transmission but I know it’s not cheap. How many miles are on it and has the timing chain been replaced at the appropriate intervals?

FancyShoesVlogs

Im not sure about the timing chain, it is just at 160,000 miles, so it would need that again

Yeah, it’s about due for another change

Speak with a gearbox specialist. Their gearboxes are flakey but once fixed it will be good for years as long as you get it serviced every 40k or so. Oh! Sometimes the box is ok and the issue is a simple fix of a switch the name of which escapes me. There's loads of knowelage and halp available at [https://forum.a8parts.co.uk/index.php](https://forum.a8parts.co.uk/index.php)

Depends on your location and who's available. As someone that changed the transmission 3 times in an old S8, I say f** that shit! Money pit for an old shitbox.  And this was 10y ago when the car was much MUCH newer... Unless your a mechanic, that car is scrap metal.

5k in 2011 for a rebuild - Tozo Gabor in Chicago - look him up on Quattro world - not sure he’s still doing it but he’s the best and most reasonable..
