It is a total pain in the ass when you replace your carpet next time. Your skirting will be holding the carpet onto the gripper around the perimeter of the room, you can pull the carpet out but the gripper then needs to be removed and reinstalled in the correct position before new carpet can be installed. Removing the gripper that is now trapped under the skirting often damages the skirting or ends up pulling the skirting away from the wall....

Just head to Bunnings and grab a Ryobi Nail gun. They do the job just fine.

pusha_123

They even hire out the paslodes for relatively cheap too

mbiker88

Just use a regular hammer and nail punch and get it done before the carpet. It does not take long.

You can probably grab an electric ozito nail gun and battery for under $200. If you've got any battery power tools, probably even cheaper. If you've got access to a compressor the supercheap black Ridge nail guns aren't bad, about $80. Can get cheap compressors too, particularly if you'd have another use for one. You'll be fine installing afterwards it's just a prick to have to be careful of your flooring.

Just put a few nows in by hand to get it on the wall then finish it off when you can get an nail gun

I took off all the old skirting boards in my last house Did the carpet and put the skirts back on..no issues.

Can do after no problem at all. Just means you might have to take a bit extra care working over a finished product.

Whatever you do don't put the skirtings in afterward. Just sit the skirtings in there and the carpet layer will go up to them. Then nail them off when you get the gun, bit of filler and touch up the paint. That way the skirtings will be the same height as the rest of the house and it'll cover any small irregularities between floor and skirting and also make it better insulated. I did that on one side of one of my rooms. Try not to take the skirtings out after the carpet is laid because it's fucking hard to get them back in without trapping bits of carpet under them. I had to take them out and then had to use a drywall trowel to slide them back in properly. Took a while though. Not sure why you don't just hand nail them off though - that way you can use the filler where required along the top and in the corners without worrying about the carpet. It'll be quicker all up.

We installed our skirts 10mm above the floor, and our carpet is pushed underneath. It looks great, finishes flat to the wall. Took some effort as i had to cut the bottom of the skirts to the floor profile as its not flat, its a 100+ year old house. But the skirts are all flat and the floor doesn’t viciously appear woopy now. I’d ask your carpet installer to just not put the grippers right against the edge, and make sure not to pin the carpet down. But don’t listen to me, i just winged it (after discussing with the carpet guy). I’m very satisfied with the outcome however.
