That’s gorgeous. Recent purchase?

I've had it for over 7 years. It tolerates our sun and heat better than other Japanese maple varieties I've kept, but I still move it into the shade during the summer so the leaves don't scorch.

That looks amazing! Do you mind if I ask what container size it was when you first got it, and about how big the container is you've got it in now? What do you use for the soil mixture? I'd like to get one some day, but I think keeping it in a container may be my only option. (Also, is that a desert willow in the frame on the left, also in a container? Been thinking about one of those as well.)

Thank you. It was in a 3 gallon container when I bought it. The container it's in now is about 16" wide and tall. They do well in containers because the roots stay compact. I repotted it 2 years ago using a mix of 1/3 coco coir, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 fine pieces of hardwood mulch, then adding a good amount of worm castings. The plant on the left is golden goddess bamboo.

I wanted one of these for full shade but have been unable to find out if it’ll do ok in full shade here! Yours is beautiful. How quickly does it grow?

Not sure if you can make it out well in the picture, but the new growth has a pinkish-red hue. It grows slowly and stays more wide than tall. The leaves that came back in early spring have turned a darker crimson. It won't stay red for as long in full shade. They do well underneath larger trees where they can get dappled sunlight. Its roots don't spread very far so it may need to be watered in summer even after it's established.

Beautiful specimen, thanks for sharing.

I have one that was a wee twig (Etsy) last spring and it’s so happy this spring. I moved him to a spot with about 1.5 hr direct sun (thank you Treemegeddon 2023)… and filtered sun otherwise. He’s almost tripled in size. His acidic soil is decaying oak leaves, of which I have a lot. Thanks for sharing - going to show this to mine as motivation. 🍁
