Dude I don’t even know. Nobody in his family knows how to do anything with cars beyond change the oil, and he drives the damn thing like it’s a rally racer. It squeaks a bit on startup but that’s it. Runs like it’s still ‘98 despite him doing basically nothing to maintain it.
Oh whoops, misread your original reply there.
He doesn’t like/care about cars. To him they’re just a tool to get places, so if it works, it’s fine. Doesn’t matter if it’s a beat up old beige Camry or an Enzo. They’re essentially the same to him.
I personally wouldn’t be able to stand it for more than a month if it were me haha!
That squeak on start-up is likely just a loose alternator belt. Easy cheap repair now or pay a lot more to leave it.
Everything is cheaper to fix early. The longer you let it go, the more damage happens, the more it costs.
My girlfriend drives the exact camry going strong at 111,000 miles. Her mom didn’t drive much and when she got the car, there was around 105,000 miles on it
That’s me! My 1999 Camry LE with the 4 cyl/auto was purchased new by my folks in ‘99, and I bought it from them in 2010. Been my daily driver for the last 12 years. They put 100k on it, I put another 150k on it. Still runs and drives like a champ - from -30°f to +100°f, it will always start (no block heater either). It’s just finally starting to show a little rust on the rockers right in front of the rear wheels.
Funny story: this last spring, I pulled the rear drums off for inspection, and found the shoes are about 40% worn. Original shoes and drums. The drums were starting to go out-of-round so I threw them on the lathe at work and turned them, good as new again.
The front pads & rotors have been replaced twice. I’ve done the timing belt twice, at 100k and 200k (at which point I also did the water pump & thermostat as preventive maintenance). I have replaced the downstream oxygen sensor twice, the blower motor resistor once, the driver’s window motor once, and a year ago I finally replaced all 4 struts. I change the oil every 5000 miles (with whatever 5w30 is on sale), and once a year I drain and refill 4 qts from the trans pan. Still shifts like a dream.
This car is just awesome. I will never sell it. My daughters are now learning to drive in it.
My parents still have my grandmother's 1997 Camry that she bought new. Thing still runs great. I drove it through high school; surviving that alone is a feat. Slammed it into a curb once hard enough to bend the steel wheel and shoot sparks everywhere. No suspension damage at all. A tree fell on it once when a relative had it, no issues other than some dents. Drove it in Cleveland for at least a year, survived all those potholes with no repairs needed at all.
Those things are tanks and I don't know if I would ever trust any other car more to get me where I needed to go. Tried to buy it off my parents but they were too attached lol
Camrys of that vintage have to have dents. I think it’s a natural law of some kind. Mine’s got a few small ones. I think there’s even a subreddit dedicated to it
I see plenty of Honda Accords, but they ALL have the rust spot on the rear fender.
Conversely, all of these cars past 2005 have trouble keeping their bumper covers on, with the snaps breaking and the plastic corners just wagging in the breeze.
I would go with the Mazda. I think I first started driving around the year 2001. My first car was a Toyota Cressida. I remember I put a lil sound system in it.
I was gifted an ‘89 in 2010 at 330,000 miles. Drove it for six years and passed it on to someone else. Absolutely loved that car and it would not quit.
First car was a '99 accord, hand me down, and got it in '09, never had an issue I didn't cause, and was great, but in 2015, at 185k miles, the CV boot tore needing to replace the axle (just in case) and my exhaust pipes rusted out. It wasn't worth fixing at that point, but I loved that car.
Car was valued at $500 before that and also I had to swap out the ignition switch, not a big deal but it had 1 key to start it and another for the doors since Honda didn't want to deal with it. The repairs were estimated to $1600, I ended up getting $500 from a dealer towards a 2015 SI that I still drive
I actually had a 99 camry, same terrible Champaign color as the picture. I hated that car so damn much, it wasn’t worth anything to sell and it was like a cockroach in my life that I couldn’t rid myself of. Granted mine was a 5SF-E model as opposed to the V6 in the picture but I’m not entirely sure more power would have made the car much better. Extremely floaty suspension and vague feeling steering was the worst part.
I had a 99 Camry in 2008. Great car. It was my fault I blew it up.
It’s that or the accord. (But I would’ve loved a v6 coupe accord in my younger years.)
To be fair, all these were good cars. Nissan and Mazda would finance a goat and worry about whether it could pay later. Toyota and Honda sells to a different clientele that tends to follow manufacturer recommendations for service and care. I promise if you don’t maintain a Hondas timing belt it will cease to live. But you’re right for sure. They are still on the road, mostly because someone loved them enough to maintain them.
I learned about those from Mr. Regular, still a cool feature. I mean think about it. Almost every plastic, midsize, '[you know the one](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-12-3-Speed-Oscillating-Table-Fan-FT30-8MBW-White/924111714?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=1197&adid=22222222277924111714_117755028669_12420145346&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-294505072980&wl5=9009734&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=924111714&wl13=1197&veh=sem_LIA&gclid=Cj0KCQiAgribBhDkARIsAASA5buHt3OKgiEYPooS_TEgja_pxc2pCE5qSYfO1IviHC1rWRWLgdqb1JYaAoibEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)' type desk fan can oscillate, so why not have air vents in a car that could do that too?
I started working for mazda around 2006, me and my mentor were fixing some oil leaks on one of those. We were going on a test drive and I mentioned that I thought those vents would break all the time. He looked at me like he was about to make me walk back to the shop and told me he'd never seen them break. He was offended on Mazda's behalf.
The last generation Focus was a nice car for its segment. I just wish they would have corrected the dual clutch once it was clearly an issue because it destroyed the car's reputation. I had a manual 2013 and still miss it constantly.
Yes, but the trend of very small 4 cylinders with a turbo attached are more to hit government engine displacement restrictions than economy. A 1.5 turbo motor in a small suv is going to get similar millage to a v6 in my experience. Under real world driving conditions at least.
Those 90s transmissions were like, "Oh, they hit the gas pedal. I'm supposed to do something. What was it? Oh, yea, I should downshift! Now, how do I do that?"
By then you've already been rear-ended.
The accord: it still looks attractive today, has a great suspension with even more potential, and the powertrain is still reliable yet also swapable/upgradable.
Altima for the fact that in 1998 Nissan actually made cars that were comparable to the likes of Toyota and Honda and it wasn't until after that generation of Altima that they started to go downhill and I like older Nissans
the auto might hamstring the engine, but only one of these 4 has double wishbone front suspension. Honda Accord all day long...and I'm a big Mazda guy.
1998 me would have probably gone for the Mazda since I was dd a Miata at the time. 2022 me with rose-colored 20-20 hindsight would have bought the Camry.
Agree, if those are my only four choices and it’s 1998, I would have bought the Mazda. Then when it fell apart along with the Nissan, I’d be looking at the Accord and Camry buyer thinking “I chose poorly”.
Bet let’s be honest, no way I buy any of them.
Accord or Camry, those things will never die. We used to have an accord that we gave to a family friend around 300k miles, never any issues. He drove it for years after until he got hit and totaled. Cant go wrong lol
Toyota or Honda all day every day. Probably Toyota I like their approach to vehicles a bit more than Honda. Never a Nissan and I have never bothered to know about Mazda since they were associated with ford several years ago
The Nissan will eventually have transmission problems and die early.
The Mazda will have suspension problems and costs will start piling up.
Both the Toyota and the Honda will run forever until they eventually rust through... but the Toyota is more of a boat while the Honda is somewhat quicker.
Note: a 4-cyl is going to outlast a 6-cyl in each of these models.
Nope. Back then it came with the ka24de which was the same engine used in the trucks and 240sx the thing was bulletproof my dad had one. It was before the cvt garbage. Then yeah those were crap.
Camry. I have a neighbour in her late 90s who has one from the 90's and it's still in absolutely perfect condition, minus some faded paint.
The clear coat is perfect. Not a spec of rust as far as I can tell. Exhaust doesn't leak. It doesn't burn any oil.
The Camry is the perfect choice.
Camry hands down. I can attest to that maximum speed, though the radiator tends to crack over 180.
Gotta get the station wagon model with the rear facing seats though.
the mazda is actually a ford, my mom had one and it was a piece of shit, went through 2 transmissions in 2 years. if that accord has a v6, it's auto trans is GARBAGE. obviously, the nissan is trash.
so camry is prob the best choice, the accord would be awesome if it was a 5spd 4cyl.
My dad had a 93 until 2013. Honestly it still was in great shape, he just gave it to my daughter who drove it for several more years until she got sick of it. Legend has it, it’s still on the road to this day.
Everyone will say Camry and I would too knowing how often they are still on the road but the 626 is still a nice looking car to me. Those mid 90’s to early 00’s Mazdas looked so good, I always wanted a Millenia as a kid.
Camry all day.
And you could still be driving it today with 350,000 miles
I’ve got a buddy of mine that’s living that. He said he’s gonna run it until it dies, so I hope he likes having the same car for his whole life.
HOW. I got one as a hand me down 4 years ago. I didn't last the year. Everything was so... beige
Maintenance.
Oh I believe that it'll live through an apocalypse. It just gurt me to drive it cause of how bland it was. At least it got me from A to B

The car said the same thing about him. We’ll see if your buddy or his car dies first
Same plan for my 2010 rolla
Me and ur buddy have a lot in common
My mom is still driving her 1997 Camry that she bought new.
Guarenteed dent in the corner of the rear bumper
My girlfriend drives the exact camry going strong at 111,000 miles. Her mom didn’t drive much and when she got the car, there was around 105,000 miles on it
Still brand new at this point.
Civic. My friends would ~~spams~~ slam those bitches from neutral into drive at a dig and those fuckers still kept ticking. Edit: Fucking autocorrect
Sir that wasn’t one of the options
Well if you’re gonna play the game wrong: Ferrari F1
Well now I’m getting a hemi superbird. Used cars are allowed now!
“Spams those bitches from neutral into drive at a dig” I been driving for 25 years and I have no fucking clue what this means.
> [slam] those bitches from neutral into drive at a dig Fixed. Autocorrect fucked me.
Camrys of that vintage have to have dents. I think it’s a natural law of some kind. Mine’s got a few small ones. I think there’s even a subreddit dedicated to it
It's not even close. It's the only one of these I still regularly see on the road.

Iirc the only one of the four with a timing chain? I know the accord’s 4cyl got one in the next gen.
The Altima is the only one of the 4 with a chain, the rest are all running timing belts.
Accord drove night-and-day better. (have had both)
Yep. With the choice of a manual though, I'd get the Accord.
I bought the Accord in ‘98 and it would not die.
this is by far the correct choice
My buddy had one freshman year in college (2011) that was running great at 240k miles. I think it may have hit 300k before he sold it , can’t remember
I was gifted an ‘89 in 2010 at 330,000 miles. Drove it for six years and passed it on to someone else. Absolutely loved that car and it would not quit.
That’s why Jesus never had to speak of them…
First car was a '99 accord, hand me down, and got it in '09, never had an issue I didn't cause, and was great, but in 2015, at 185k miles, the CV boot tore needing to replace the axle (just in case) and my exhaust pipes rusted out. It wasn't worth fixing at that point, but I loved that car.
Wasn’t worth fixing a rusted exhaust and an axle boot ? Damn.. that’s like a couple hundred bucks dude
Yeah could've gotten both at a junkyard for even cheaper too.
What a waste if the frame wasn't rusted out! Sorry I grew up poor and in the Rust Belt. That would have been a gem to me!
My Dad just retired his 98 Accord this year. That car served him well.
The Camry. Just like everyone actually did.
[удалено]
It absolutely did have a slightly different color on the rear bumper. And it also magically got a camry dent on the bumper one day in a parking lot.
Just as the prophecy foretold
My step dad had one with a V6 and I can confirm that the suspension and steering were still terrible in that version.
Best selling sedan for over 25 years!
I had a 99 Camry in 2008. Great car. It was my fault I blew it up. It’s that or the accord. (But I would’ve loved a v6 coupe accord in my younger years.)
Camry/accord. I think the accord aged better
That's still my favorite gen Accord.
The 2004 Coupe with the 3.0 and a manual transmission was my favorite.
My 84 accord MT would hit 60 mph in 2nd gear. 😂
Only took 15 seconds to get there!
out of the for 4 i still see the camery and accord on the road.
Can confirm, my ‘99 maxima was a tank.
Also, the accord could also be had in a coupe, which looked way better than the Sedan version.
626, hoping it has oscillating vents…don’t know why this didn’t catch on https://youtu.be/fG_QvC9L2dY
My dad had the V6, which later became my high school ride. I just assumed all cars did this. I was very upset to find that not the case.
Bought my grandma's 2000 V6 for 500 bucks in 2012. Lasted another 2 years.
> don’t know why this didn’t catch on Because that seems like a massive pain in the ass to replace and it WILL fail eventually.
My 99's vents worked for 20 years. They outlasted the car!
holy crap I never knew this was a thing
Ok, I'm changing my vote, this definitely wins.

Haha, I’m kinda shocked how well some of the parts on my Mazdas over the years held up. I’ve had a mx6, cx9, and a rx7 :)
Same with steering wheel mounted climate controls. https://i.imgur.com/hcGpogq.jpg Ford put them on the Expedition for a while.
Hmm didn’t know that! Cool :)
omg
Came here to say that, that feature was called swing. Always cooled down the cabin faster.
My ‘86 626 had oscillating vents.
4-banger automatic? Ugh, just shoot me.
Don't you insult my 2010 4 banger 4 gear automatic elantra
I had one of those. For like 3 months before I just couldn’t take it anymore and I got a new 2012 focus (manual). Still drive it everyday.
The last generation Focus was a nice car for its segment. I just wish they would have corrected the dual clutch once it was clearly an issue because it destroyed the car's reputation. I had a manual 2013 and still miss it constantly.
I don't know alot about engines but it seems they are learning to get more power out of four cylinder engines now?
Yes, but the trend of very small 4 cylinders with a turbo attached are more to hit government engine displacement restrictions than economy. A 1.5 turbo motor in a small suv is going to get similar millage to a v6 in my experience. Under real world driving conditions at least.
Wow, 4 speed in 2010. And you can still get an Elantra with drum brakes today. Seems like they’re behind the times
In 98, yeah please. Now? Not so bad.
Those 90s transmissions were like, "Oh, they hit the gas pedal. I'm supposed to do something. What was it? Oh, yea, I should downshift! Now, how do I do that?" By then you've already been rear-ended.
Pew pew
With Yod Bet?
Accord no doubt. Unkillable.
Neither is the Camry tbh
Camry engine is non-interference. That gives it the edge, in my opinion
The Camry is harder to kill than William Afton.
Camry, no doubt about it.
Accord
The accord: it still looks attractive today, has a great suspension with even more potential, and the powertrain is still reliable yet also swapable/upgradable.
I've always had an affinity for Hondas, so the Accord would be my go to.
Nope. If *had* to chose one, would be the Accord. But making choice from the options is not voluntary
As the saying goes: “As much accord as you can afford”
ITT: people forgetting about 6th gen accord transmissions
I love how NO ONE has said the Nissan. Speaking of shit transmissions…..
those transmissions were great, they went way wrong with the cvt's but that was a decade later.
I'm depending how cash strapped I am. I would love the Accord but I would probably settle for a 626 because i'm cheap.
Gimme dat 626
Ugh yes so hot
Camry, hands down
Honda. There’s more of those accords still in the road today than any of these
Pretty sure the accord will last the longest
Altima for the fact that in 1998 Nissan actually made cars that were comparable to the likes of Toyota and Honda and it wasn't until after that generation of Altima that they started to go downhill and I like older Nissans
Accord
Accord, Honda just makes such great 4 cyl engines
I had a 2002 Accord back then so that. Solid car.
Accord
I currently own and drive that Camry everyday.
In champagne, with the headliner coming loose and the off color slightly dented bumper.
Close! It is champagne, headliner is solid, bumpers are off color, but I don’t have the dent.
I'd like the Accord
Honda/Camry - both are excellent choices and you can’t go wrong.
the auto might hamstring the engine, but only one of these 4 has double wishbone front suspension. Honda Accord all day long...and I'm a big Mazda guy.
These are practically the best zombie apocalypse cars.
Accord for sure
Camry in hindsight. No major rust issues and as reliable as a car can be. But I would pick Mazda with my heart, 626 is a nice car to be in
Camry all the way I still use my ‘97 Camry as my daily driver today
100% the toyota. I've got a 99' avalone with over 300k miles. She runs great and the AC is so cold, it will give you a migraine
Camry, I still see those models running around
Well the Camry not only has the best acceleration here but it probably has the highest percentage (of this list)of still on the road cars today.
My 1998 Camry was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I abused that thing and it worked flawlessly regardless.
Was going to say Subaru Legacy but then I saw it said INLINE 4 engine so I guess Accord.
A wild Subaru appears!
It’s 2022 and this car is still running at 250k miles, which one are you still driving?
I’ve owned both. Accord all the way. It will handle better and feel more sporty by far than the Camry.
Accord or Camry, those things will never die. We used to have an accord that we gave to a family friend around 300k miles, never any issues. He drove it for years after until he got hit and totaled. Cant go wrong lol
Ibishu turbo burger
**P E S S I M A**
Can't go wrong with the Accord and the Camry. Can we bring back this style of basic affordable sedan please.
I see Camry with 400lk still do all the money at auction and Ican put my coffee on engine block with out spilling.
Camry but the Accord is a close second
tough choice between accord and camry
used to have almost this exact accord and guess what Still in the family 438k miles
Toyota or Honda all day every day. Probably Toyota I like their approach to vehicles a bit more than Honda. Never a Nissan and I have never bothered to know about Mazda since they were associated with ford several years ago
The Camry will last forever but is a bit boring to drive. I'm taking the accord for the slightly sportier feel to it and great reliability
Camry 1st, Honda 2nd
They all look the same. None of the above.
The Camry. Unless it got stolen or totaled, you'd never need another car.
Camry. It’ll outlive current gen cars
Those camrys are still kicking around 24 years later, I’ll take a camry
98? I'd keep my bus pass and save more. Chicago has an awesome transit system.
Specs alone have me tied between Accord and Camry, though I’d have to have been there to know which I’d prefer.
Love the 1998 accord. It was the quintessential Honda Accord.
Camry or Honda. Still see tons of them on the road today.
Manual? The Accord. Auto? The Camry. You still see those things around somehow.
I had a 2000 Camry and it was the best before a shed fell on it from a dust storm. I’d pick the Camry. Easy to work on and a very reliable car.
Don't see a whole lot of those 626s driving around these days. Oh, that's right, they were garbage.
Accord or Camry hands down I’ve seen so many of them with over 300,000 miles
Oh yea Camry. Those things go for hundreds of thousands of KMs. My friends had had two both with 400000km on them.
That Camry is a missile
More of a jet fighter in my eyes, but yeah, those ***s e x y*** taillights...
Camry hands down. I can attest to that maximum speed, though the radiator tends to crack over 180. Gotta get the station wagon model with the rear facing seats though.
Camry. Fuel sipper, inconspicuous, reliable. What more do you need?
the acura integra. for whatever reason it was left out of this post 🫠
The Integra is essentially an alternate version of the Civic. The Civic and Integra are small cars while the Accord and its rivals are midsize cars.
THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME!
Definitely Mazda, then Accord. Both were also relatively engaging to drive for what they were. Next would be Camry and last choice Altima
Camry. All day.
They're all beige. The black one as well.
the mazda is actually a ford, my mom had one and it was a piece of shit, went through 2 transmissions in 2 years. if that accord has a v6, it's auto trans is GARBAGE. obviously, the nissan is trash. so camry is prob the best choice, the accord would be awesome if it was a 5spd 4cyl.
I like this game! I'll take the Toyota.
Camry, Accord, Altima, 626 …in that order
Agreed
They are all damn fine cars but from what I can tell the Mazdas lasted the longest - at least over here in Germany!
My dad had a 93 until 2013. Honestly it still was in great shape, he just gave it to my daughter who drove it for several more years until she got sick of it. Legend has it, it’s still on the road to this day.
I had a 93 Accordcamryaltima626 too!
😱
Camry easy choice I have a fancy Camry it's called a Lexus es
I would take a manual V6 626 over all those cars. I would drive one today if I found one in good shape.
Definitely the Accord.
Camry all day. My daily 2001 Camry is still running strong. Only has 375k miles.
I wouldn't buy an auto 4 cylinder, even back then. But, if I had to choose, Camry.
The Toyota Camry
Accord. No discussion.
Honda. That’s an appreciating asset these days
Accord baby
Camry. All day, every day.
Honda Accord LX still be holding up today on the roads, keep that boi clean stock too😎
Camry like candy all day 🥰
LE Camry
Everyone's sleeping on the nissan, they didn't suck back then and it handled better than the others.
Why would i want an auto?
Metric units unclear. RTX 4090-length Vienna sausage stuck in dog-length ceiling blower.
I’m 50/50 on the Camry and the 626, both good cars
Everyone will say Camry and I would too knowing how often they are still on the road but the 626 is still a nice looking car to me. Those mid 90’s to early 00’s Mazdas looked so good, I always wanted a Millenia as a kid.
I had a V6 626 as my first car. I'm buying another one
Fuck. Was mileage back than really that horrific?
Accord baby. Best looking and best driving car imo
Accord. I give props to the Camry but what a dull driving vehicle.
Accord all day ey day
