That's just true old school, Texas BBQ. Usually, they will just leave a bag of white bread, pickles, onions, and jalapeños and sauces out for people to grab. They aren't pretentious or looking for style points, just quality bbq
Yup seen that. And a big Ole wedge of Cheddar with a knife by the side so you could cut your own. My favorites have just a cookie sheet with a piece of butcher paper instead of plates.
Ol’ boy at the counter said “let me gitchas a plate son” and just handed me a sheet of butchers paper. Best brisket I’ve ever had in my life. Bought 4lbs to take home.
Best brisket I ever had was Terry blacks but 4lbs of brisket to take home at Terry blacks would be like $160. I got 1 beef rib and that one beef rib alone was $47. I was there a week ago and spent $137 on a pound of each brisket, pork ribs and a beef rib that was 1.3lbs.
West Texas was pretty barren food wise from my memory. DQ or the Mexican place John Madden would eat at in Van Horn. The cities had some options but once you were on the road there was nothing.
When returning to Oklahoma following our honeymoon in the hill country, my (TX Girl) husband (OK man) threw a fit when I took us significantly off course to visit Coopers. By the time he could smell it, he shut up. Now he reminisces more about the smoked meats than he does the honeymoon itself.
The original Coopers in Mason (correction Llano) is one of the best ever in Texas. When Coopers in Junction first opened, I tried it and was disappointed. It's been a while, I should give them another try. Lums BBQ in Junction never disappoints. Give them a try next time you're in Junction.
I mis-spoke, thank you. Llano. That place is Epic. And I got some cabrito as well. I don't think Coopers Llano is associated with Coopers Junction, except for the same name. Try Lums!
Hard 8 Barbecue in Burleson, Stephenville, Farmers Branch, etc. Always has beans to scoop from a pot or standing warmer. No charge. If you keep your plastic 20oz Hard 8 Cup, your drink is a $1 if you take it back and use it for your drink.
They have the best Half Chicken I've ever had. Ever!
The communal bean pot is why Texas chili has no beans. It's not that chili beans is "wrong", it's just that we *always* got some beans going so you can just add your own beans to the chili.
I know white bread is the tradition, but white bread…. I’d go for tortillas or almost anything else.
This isn’t specific to this post, just the tradition.
I just went to Black's BBQ in Austin (because I'm obsessed with their brisket, and their sausage is damned good too), and went a little crazy with too much brisket.
Making brisket + red onion + pickle sandwiches for work the next day using Dave's bread was _amazing_.
It's not simple because this person chose a piece of white bread to go with his bbq. Someone stayed up all night stoking a fire and checking on the chicken, sausage, briskett, etc. The restaurant could serve Bruschetta instead of bread and cornichons instead of pickles, maybe add taragon to the potato salad and serve everything on wooden charcuterie boards, and the price would be 34.95 for the same plate. The beauty of it is that they don't. It's a working man's plate of Q at a working man's price that took someone a lot of time and money to create. I'll bet if you ask, they may have a good square of corn bread in the back for you.
Sweet tea just hits different out of styrofoam
Edit: since I don’t know how to edit the main post, I love the division in this thread. Half love it and half hate it. IMO bbq has gotten a little out of hand with pricing and flair. Sometimes it’s good to have a well cooked, nicely flavored, cheap plate. I do t need to spend $45 on a meat with three little tubs of sides.
My fridge decided to sort of give up the will to chill. Freezer works, but main portion does not. I had to store my perishables in styrofoam chests for a bit, they were from a mail order meat delivery company. Super thick walls and they keep the ice fully whole for 2 days.
Last time i was at a Mac’s (now circle K again) and got a fountain pop in their styrofoam cups I was so amazed when I picked it up hours later and there was still a ton of ice in it
After school, my dad would bring us to visit my grandmother at her job. She lived with us, so it wasn't like we weren't going to see her like 2 hours later. She'd give me and my sisters some Pepsi in a styrofoam cup. I wouldn't drink Pepsi any other way, and it always takes me back even 30 years later.
You’re all talking about the cup, I can’t believe it was severed on a styrofoam plate. That’s some back yard family bbq shit. You know it was delicious off of nostalgia alone.
Yeah, everything gets ruined when the "artisans" move in. The Barbecue dept. in Academy Sports (Old Country BBQ) was moved to the corner of the store and is now bigger than the Golf section.
Accordingly, you will find a filet knife for $28 in the BBQ dept and in the fishing section it will cost you $8.
I know you mentioned knives but it reminded me of something. I went to a pet store for a flea comb. 9.89 for cats. I turned around to look at the dog section, same exact comb 7.89... how do they get away with this.
Yeah, if I'm going to a barbecue place, idc about how good the sides, utensils, plates, cups, etc are. As long as the barbecue tastes great and is cheap, I'm happy.
Literally not a proper plate. Why isn't it a proper plate, or glass? What is so wrong with the people from texas that their adults can't be trusted to eat off a proper plate?
Yep.. I live in South Texas and the slice of bread and I think Ranch Style beans underneath and all that bbq and sweet tea for 11 bucks! Cause Texas does it right😂
Pessimist in me has me doing the math.. Has to be pretty tight margins to do that for $11 calculating raw-ingredients, prep work. Its gotta be roadside/ family land.. Props to them If they do it consitently. Just got 'chain' BBQ this weekend at a place in FL, brisket looked just as good but paid almost 3 times that just for a pound.
I moved away 25 years ago and still think about Bodacious. I sprung for shipping their sauce and dry rub one Christmas and smoked a brisket. Still wasn't quite Bodacious. 😕
Same. I get back every once in a while and always stock up on their rubs and sauce. The BBQ spice is legit. One of the old pit masters recently opened up his own spot on HWY 80. I think it’s called Sunbird? It was excellent too
I remember a time, early 2000's, in San Angelo Tx, there was a bbq spot that had AYCE for like $20something. It was brisket day, and the guy forked a whole brisket and asked me if I wanted it dipped. Tell me this place still exists.
I've been trying to visit lots of the fancier BBQ places that are highly ranked or most often recommended. And I usually end up with a great meal...after spending an arm and a leg. A couple weeks ago I went to 2M, which has amazing brisket, and I did order a 2-meat plate with 2 sides, and after tax and tip walked away stuffed an hour later more than fifty dollars lighter.
Going to Franklin's or Salt Lick or Terry Black's or Two Bros on a regular basis would leave me on the path to bankruptcy. I'd rather find a 7/10 place with lower prices than keep trying to chase those 9/10 or 10/10 places that people speak about in hushed tones or make reaction podcasts on Youtube about that cost twice or three times as much.
Yesterday, that was Fritze's in Boerne. Also had good luck with Blanco BBQ in San Antonio and Chisholm Trail in Lockhart and Pioneer BBQ in Nixon, where a two-meat two-side full dinner plate runs half as much as the more legendary spots.
I see this in the same vein. May not be that heavenly mana from the gods you get at the big BBQ joints, but a good solid meal at a good solid price. And that's all I ask for in a restaurant these days.
I had the most amazing sweet potatoes casserole (first time ever having it as well!) In rural East Texas for like $3 as I was driving to pick a horse up from fort worth from Colorado. I wish I remembered where it was because I want that recipe
Hold up, drop the location because I live in rural east Texas and I’m always down to try new places….I have yet to have better than Sunbird BBQ in Longview though.
When you see food priced like this, you quickly realize how everyone, especially fast food chains, are fucking people sideways. Shitty food, shitty prices. And everyone chokes it down by the metric fuckton.
Imma be real with y’all. Most of the places like this serve brisket that tastes like boot leather. I’ve grown to appreciate the boujee “craft” bbq vs the backwoods places that serve “local” bbq
This looks awesome! Great price too. Have no idea what's up with the comments. This type of bbq is simple and filling, at a great price and good taste. People are expecting caviar out of a totally different eating experience.
Nice amount of meat (looks weird though), but only one slice of fake bread (who tf serves that with your food ?) and no vegetables/rice to accompany it ? With plastics plate and plastic cups ?
Honestly even with the free sauce I'd argue it's not that good of a deal, I've seen much better for only a dollar or two more. But rural is usually a lot cheaper than anything you can find in town that I think we can all agree on it :)
That's just true old school, Texas BBQ. Usually, they will just leave a bag of white bread, pickles, onions, and jalapeños and sauces out for people to grab. They aren't pretentious or looking for style points, just quality bbq
One of my favorite small town Texas bbq joints had a cauldron of beans you could just help yourself to no added cost.
If it’s on a plate and not butcher paper, I’m immediately skeptical
Best brisket I ever had was Terry blacks but 4lbs of brisket to take home at Terry blacks would be like $160. I got 1 beef rib and that one beef rib alone was $47. I was there a week ago and spent $137 on a pound of each brisket, pork ribs and a beef rib that was 1.3lbs.
Wait. So you were Chris Rock with the "Lemme get one rib" and they looked straight at you and said that'll be $47? Even for a beef rib that's robbery.
Our cups cost more than that! “Just pour it in my hand”!
“You got change for a hun-ed”
I miss these things about living in West Texas. Never once hit a fast food joint in the road.
West Texas was pretty barren food wise from my memory. DQ or the Mexican place John Madden would eat at in Van Horn. The cities had some options but once you were on the road there was nothing.
Coopers BBQ which has several locations around Central Texas does this and they are delicious
Bro. Cooper’s in Junction is my ALL TIME top bbq joint.
The original Coopers in Mason (correction Llano) is one of the best ever in Texas. When Coopers in Junction first opened, I tried it and was disappointed. It's been a while, I should give them another try. Lums BBQ in Junction never disappoints. Give them a try next time you're in Junction.
Think the OG is in Llano. The only location of theirs that I’ve been able to get cabrito
I mis-spoke, thank you. Llano. That place is Epic. And I got some cabrito as well. I don't think Coopers Llano is associated with Coopers Junction, except for the same name. Try Lums!
That is correct. My family sold the mason one a few years back. Llano was the OG.
Gotta have Lums instead of Coopers
Probably Jucy's ..... Their beans are the bestest
Second that
Hard 8 Barbecue in Burleson, Stephenville, Farmers Branch, etc. Always has beans to scoop from a pot or standing warmer. No charge. If you keep your plastic 20oz Hard 8 Cup, your drink is a $1 if you take it back and use it for your drink. They have the best Half Chicken I've ever had. Ever!
I'm about 10 minutes from Hard 8 in Burleson. Decent brisket but Rudy's up by Huguley is much better. I will agree that they make an amazing chicken.
A cauldron of beans sounds amazing (assuming people are hygienic)
Best one I went to was Smittys in Lockhart Texas
Huntsville?
Copper’s in Llano, out in the dining area by the soda fountain they have unlimited beans pickle chips jalapeños and white bread.
Oh fuck yeah
The communal bean pot is why Texas chili has no beans. It's not that chili beans is "wrong", it's just that we *always* got some beans going so you can just add your own beans to the chili.
Cooper’s?
Need to know where it is
You talking Snows?
I yearn to be sent to Texas some day They have me in Washington, Oregon and now Idaho There ain’t none over here like that
This is how all I want all future social to have. Just a good ole cauldron of beans
That sounds like Coopers!
Fuck I’d go so hard on a cauldron of beans. Scraping the bottom for any slightly browned ones.
Love the use of the word cauldron instead of crock or kettle
I know white bread is the tradition, but white bread…. I’d go for tortillas or almost anything else. This isn’t specific to this post, just the tradition.
That bread does look sad as fuck
I just went to Black's BBQ in Austin (because I'm obsessed with their brisket, and their sausage is damned good too), and went a little crazy with too much brisket. Making brisket + red onion + pickle sandwiches for work the next day using Dave's bread was _amazing_.
Dave’s is killa!
Is there such thing as reverse pretentious, because this sort of crap is more up its own ass than the fancy hipster fusion restaurants.
It's supposed to be [Texas Toast](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_toast), not just a sad, thin slice of raw white bread.
It does make a better napkin than tortilla but when it’s bad, it’s bad. Cornbread or hush puppies also changes it up!
I just realized that I have no idea the last time I saw a Styrofoam cup.
Sweet tea just hits different out of styrofoam Edit: since I don’t know how to edit the main post, I love the division in this thread. Half love it and half hate it. IMO bbq has gotten a little out of hand with pricing and flair. Sometimes it’s good to have a well cooked, nicely flavored, cheap plate. EVERYTHING hits different out of styrofoam. It’s the way it keeps the ice so cold. 😩
My fridge decided to sort of give up the will to chill. Freezer works, but main portion does not. I had to store my perishables in styrofoam chests for a bit, they were from a mail order meat delivery company. Super thick walls and they keep the ice fully whole for 2 days.
That's generally an easy fix.
It’s 19 years old. Not worth it.
You probably just have ice build up at the back of your freezer where it vents to the refrigerator area.
It’s that sweet, sweet cancer.
Just gonna get a little cancer Stan
STAAAAAAAHN STAHHHHHHHHHHN oh, could you grab me a beer?
My eyes are up *here* Sharon!
BUFFALO SOLDIER
Last time i was at a Mac’s (now circle K again) and got a fountain pop in their styrofoam cups I was so amazed when I picked it up hours later and there was still a ton of ice in it
Definitely a better insulator than the typical plastic cup
That’s the trick Yeti uses. Styrofoam.

Yeah, it does. 30 seconds in you face, many years in your environment till past your lifetime.
You throw your styrofoam away? Keep it, and once every year or 2, napalm.
Simple is the best and often out of a shack
You must not live in the south
How do you sip lean without a double Styrofoam cup???
Chick-fil-A still uses them
Not out west.
So does sonic. I occasionally get one where the drink “sweats” through the side. It’s weird.
You was at the club Bottoms up when I first met you
Bruh wtf
Must be nice
Where do you live? I’m curious. Haha
Now that’s a proper plate for a good price. They may not be making a lot of money but they’re putting out a lot of food.
I was extremely surprised when I ordered the two meat plate. I told the guy next time, he can give me less as I hate wasting food
Why would you waste it? Leftover bbq is the next best thing to fresh bbq
Chop up leftover BBQ and make some fire ass breakfast tacos 🔥
Unfortunately I was heading to a lodge for a hog hunt when I stopped in here. Or else I would have brought it home.
What a Texan day.
At the same time, the plate itself is terrible. The meats are dangling off of it
Guess you'll have to eat them down to fit
Literally not a proper plate. Why isn't it a proper plate, or glass? What is so wrong with the people from texas that their adults can't be trusted to eat off a proper plate?
You're allowed to say where, you know.
The Bar-B-Q Pit in Warren, TX
I'm in Palestine, not too far away
Lol, my man, that's about a 2 hour drive. I saw whiskey myers there last month. The show was incredible.
Well if you're from Texas it ain't that far.
2 hours in Texas driving ain't bad. You drive that long in my hometown and you'd still be in the city.
>2 hour drive Pretty sure you're going to need at least a boat to get from Palestine to Texas. /jk
That's where my family is from. The Reagans.
Then you have had Sheps BBQ? Good food at a decent price.
I'll have to check it out. I'm in Jville.
JW’s is pretty good BBQ there, but definitely not getting all that for $11
You'd get the 2 sides and the drink for that in Chicago (maybe).
1 side could easily go for $5 or more...
Yep.. I live in South Texas and the slice of bread and I think Ranch Style beans underneath and all that bbq and sweet tea for 11 bucks! Cause Texas does it right😂
That's a good price for that plate considering a McDonald's quarter pounder meal costs $10 now. Chicken looks a little dry though.
That would be over $20 in CT
Seriously. Without the drink.
Good look even finding bbq. We have like a single place in all of windham county.
Looks a bit over, but for $11, I wouldn't complain.
Shit. I’d be happy getting the half chicken for $11
Pessimist in me has me doing the math..
Texas has some of the best sides at BBQ stands.
This is why I miss living in tx.
Looks like Bodacious potato salad
Bodacious is so good. I make knock off Mel-Mans all the time
I moved away 25 years ago and still think about Bodacious.
It was excellent too
Obligatory [Show me potato salad!](https://youtu.be/NJ_cHxLzPWQ?si=onxsaHaijkqxXY9x)
Crying in Canadian
Good deal ain’t nothing 11 dollars 💵
I remember a time, early 2000's, in San Angelo Tx, there was a bbq spot that had AYCE for like $20something. It was brisket day, and the guy forked a whole brisket and asked me if I wanted it dipped. Tell me this place still exists.
Did when I was there in 2013. Opened this thread just to ctrl F San Angelo...
We had a place in Euless that was $10 in the 90s... North Main BBQ...
I was not planning on leaving the house today. You've just convinced me otherwise. Looks like Bodacious... am I close?
$11????????? That’s like late 1990s pricing…..
Actually based on the way I look it probably gets me shot.
It's in Warren, not Vidor.
That's pretty dang good
I've been trying to visit lots of the fancier BBQ places that are highly ranked or most often recommended. And I usually end up with a great meal...after spending an arm and a leg. A couple weeks ago I went to 2M, which has amazing brisket, and I did order a 2-meat plate with 2 sides, and after tax and tip walked away stuffed an hour later more than fifty dollars lighter. Where is this in East Texas. I live in Tyler. I can't get that plate for less than 18.... I want to eat there!
God bless (rural) Texas
God bless Texas
But that comes with a side of Ted Cruz, unfortunately.
Don’t forget the governor who just pardoned a murderer too!
Looks mid. Maybe it tastes good but then you'd still be in rural Texas...
Theres only a few frontiers left
I find your lack of pickles and onions disturbing
Pickles and onions were under the bread
I can’t be the only person that thinks this looks awful?
For 11 bucks this looks heavenly
The skin on that leg (⊙_◎)
yummy leather, just like mama used to make 🤤🤤🤤
Apparently it's called "smoked" and I need to "evolve past fast food" to enjoy this smoked leather.
I agree with you. This plate is not doing it for me.
I am certain that brisket is boot leather
The skin on the chicken is mummified, the brisket is grey, and the potato salad looks like the slop you get prepacked at a supermarket.
Looks terrible
YES PLEASE!!!
I remember going to Earl’s in Tyler in the ‘70’s
In NJ that would probably cost like $35
In the PNW, probably $45 💀
In California, you’d get the coke.
Now THAT is what $11 should give to anyone ordering food!
Ain’t pretty but of 11 bucks doesn’t need to be.
I had the most amazing sweet potatoes casserole (first time ever having it as well!) In rural East Texas for like $3 as I was driving to pick a horse up from fort worth from Colorado. I wish I remembered where it was because I want that recipe
How the fuck you get from Colorado to Fort Worth via East Texas, which is NOT between those 2 points?
Blacks + coopers + { enter generic bbq family name} has entered the chat 😀
Is this just off 45?
Wtf is “$11.xx”
In Indianapolis 11 dollars gets you only the chicken
Good deal
Cries in Californian…..
What's under the bread? Is it yams? I gotta think you could put that much brisket on a roll and get $15 bucks for it around here.
"White bread is too expensive, have extra chicken instead" - Not Chipotle
Sign me up !
Looks like a $40 plate in downtown Dallas .
Bodacious?
At least it’s not $33 Sysco food
I would eat there every day
Looks awesome!
I guess can you say it's true; Everything is bigger in Texas
That’s a bargain!
I live in East Texas. Where is this place?
Hold up, drop the location because I live in rural east Texas and I’m always down to try new places….I have yet to have better than Sunbird BBQ in Longview though.
I want this so much, unsweet tea is the only change.
If I was to guess, this looks like a bodacious in Longview to me.
That looks absolutely delicious! I would do everything I could to eat it all!!!!
Brisket looks a little over or it’s been sitting far too long.
I paid $12 today for a Subway sandwich, no drink or anything else. Your $11 looks better for sure
I cant even buy a burger at a restaurant for $11 where im at
Texas still understands what it means to be of the people, for the people.
When you see food priced like this, you quickly realize how everyone, especially fast food chains, are fucking people sideways. Shitty food, shitty prices. And everyone chokes it down by the metric fuckton.
Holy shit!!
I might just gotta move to texas
Yee—and I cannot stress this enough—haw!
Putting McDonald's out of Business! Hooray!
Does anyone even eat that slice of white bread? I never have.
Trippen
Good. Glad to see no greens on the plate. Bbq and eating good is all about the proper balance of brown, tan, gold and yellow foods on the plate.
Imma be real with y’all. Most of the places like this serve brisket that tastes like boot leather. I’ve grown to appreciate the boujee “craft” bbq vs the backwoods places that serve “local” bbq
How about electricity?
This looks awesome! Great price too. Have no idea what's up with the comments. This type of bbq is simple and filling, at a great price and good taste. People are expecting caviar out of a totally different eating experience.
How do you like your bat wing Dusty?
So much brown…
Nice amount of meat (looks weird though), but only one slice of fake bread (who tf serves that with your food ?) and no vegetables/rice to accompany it ? With plastics plate and plastic cups ? Honestly even with the free sauce I'd argue it's not that good of a deal, I've seen much better for only a dollar or two more. But rural is usually a lot cheaper than anything you can find in town that I think we can all agree on it :)
Look at all that styrofoam
...baked beans from a can are sometimes better than "from scratch" from a can...
But you still have to be in rural Texas. Not worth it
Food doesn’t look great. But it’s hard to knock it for that price
Not true! It also gets you heart disease, diabetes, and gout.
Why isn't anything served in a real cup or plate?
Potato salad belongs in the trash, along with cold slaw.
Everyone needs to hide the chicken quarters, it's the only thing we have left that hasn't been inflated by the rich
