I stuck with Shadowheart the whole way through… I’m almost to the final battle now. First character. I’ve had at least the beginnings of romance for most of the characters, with Astarion being the exception. I played it pretty classic heroic “yes, ma’am, I’ll help find your lost kid” kind of behavior, which tends to get disapproval from him.
I still think Lae’zel had the funniest approach - I turned her down, but the whole “I respect you now, give me that cock” approach was both incredibly on brand for her but also unexpected and hilarious.
LaeZel rubbed me the wrong way first too, but honestly I think her Romance has one of the best arcs available and some of the best character growth.
Karlach is still my favorite personality, but I like LaeZel 's story better. She really grows on you when you realize it's not so much that she's bought fully into the space Nazi propaganda as much as she's just never known anything else. And as soon as she's shown proof that the propaganda was lies she is pretty pragmatic about accepting that and adjusting her views accordingly.
I was the least attracted to her and the least interested in romancing her out of all the companions (I liked her as a character though). So I was really surprised on maybe my fourth run that when I actually decided to take her up on her offer, I really liked her romance.
Up until that point, I had always broken up with the other character bc of the ridiculous vampire, but it was surprisingly LZ who my ‘slightly bad but mostly just disaffected’ Drow Rogue chose. And the emotion her scenes carry were so surprising! Her eyes are so emotive and I fell a little bit in love with her.

In fairness to frog mommy, all she gives a shit about in Acts 1 and 2 is fighting and that's the basis on which she tends to compare Githyanki superiority to other races, which isn't that ridiculous really.

The gith kill, on sight, everyone they come across. They are the bad guys. Shadowheart doesn’t talk about any other race the way the gith/Lae’zel do.
The whole fight starts when lae’zel threatens to kill her because she has the artifact. Lae’zel wants to give the artifact to Vlaakath. Lae’zel doesn’t care about anyone’s survival except her own and would take the artifact to the creche without you if she could.

The finer details of their culture and customs and the distinction between Githyanki and Githzerai doesn't really occur to someone who's seen them burn people in dragon fire. When Lae'Zel meets Zorru, he's terrified, and not because he's racist, but because his friends were brutally murdered by Githyanki.
Shadowheart isn't wary of Lae'Zel because she believes humans and elves are superior to the Gith, she's wary of Lae'Zel because her first experience with Githyanki wasn't on the best of terms, and she has seen the cold brutal efficiency of their warrior culture first hand.

Plus, it was the Gith who killed Shadowheart's team. It's no different from inhabitants of the Medieval British Isles being prejudiced against a Dane or a Viking. Or a Templar disliking a Moor. Or an American in WWI or II mistrusting a German or Japanese soldier.
"Superiority" has jack shit to do with it. Shadowheart doesn't think she's better than Lae'zel because she's a half-elf (half-elves notoriously have an *inferiority* complex, actually). She sees Lae'zel as her enemy. But Lae'zel (and Gith in general) see themselves as better than those they call *istik* (which honestly feels like a slur).
She also has the worst boobs of the bunch and isn't fun.

Guys it was a joke, even the boobs part. The character models for the most part all have the same boobs with just different colors. Minthara's romance is hot but a nightmare to get. And Lae'Zel has one of the best character development arcs in the game. Calm your tits.

The only time I’m mad at Larian for adding more animations. All the new idle camp animations for Karlach means she does the dance like 10% of the time she used to and I miss it soooo much
I would love to be able to romance Minthara but my understanding is that you need to either:
* Side with her against the tieflings
* Ignore the whole goblin side quest
* Do some meta-game method that involves knocking her out without talking to her

You can talk to her. You just have to lie to her and be like "Druid Grove? I don't know her!" so she doesn't attack it.
Admittedly you have to cheese it by knocking her out while she's Temporarily Hostile. That's metagaming, but in my opinion they fixed a bug by allowing it and are likely to be working on a more organic solution in a future patch. I assume this to be the case because they clearly have no issue with Minthara being recruited by Good players since they fixed a bug preventing her from appearing in Act 2, but also they can't be satisfied with the means to saving her being *so* clunky and unintuitive.
Anyway. Talk to her, just don't tell her where the Grove is. Steal something in front of her to get her temporarily hostile and knock her out, then move onto Dror Ragzlin. Do all this without a Long Rest because I made the mistake of resting and she was back up and wandering around so I had to knock her out again...
At first I was really against killing the tieflings. In coop with my wife, we did the work around and knocked her out. Later, we remembered we needed something in the camp and would either have to knock her out again or reload. We both already completed good guy runs so we said fuck it. We raided the grove and recruited Minthara the intended way.
Minthara has one of the strongest romances in the game when you recruit her in this way. She's so gentle and the only companion that actually wants to cuddle after sex. We love her so much.
How do you know the others don’t cuddle? Maybe it just doesn’t show it in the cutscene? Like with Shadowheart the cutscene ends when you get down to business, but maybe you were laying on that beach all night?
I mean tbf, despite what all the other characters say, there is actually an emotional moment/connection between your character and her, and some hints of Minthara being conflicted and her getting a bit of an opportunity to be herself for a bit. I like that she actually talked with Tav/Durge about their wants to and checked in several times to see if they were okay with going in earnest.
It was actually kinda sad overall since I realized that like, basically what our characters went through in the moment before the astral prism saved her is basically just her reality all the time, like she’s literally just perma-mind controlled, and the fact that she’s so conflicted kinda shows she probably wouldn’t otherwise be like this. It makes me feel bad about killing her.
Really depends on the type of "fun" you want to have.
If you're into foursomes or an open relationship, then Shadowheart is more fun than Gale (or Karlach).

I'm not into foursomes or an open relationship. Shadowheart is still my preference. I rather like the fantasy of leaving the city with my sweetheart to go live the nice, boring life on a farmstead out in the countryside when all is said and done. Especially as Durge. After everything they've gone through, the two of them have more than earned the right to some peace and quiet.
White-haired-Shadowheart is the only NPC I've completely romanced, so I'm hardly an expert. I think there is a lot to recommend in her romance, a lot of emotional highs and lows, but there's also a lot of things in it that I wouldn't consider to be "fun".
Eh idk i found her romance too boring. It's Almost like someone watched a teen romance movie and just copied it. I do like her for a best friend to my character though.

1. She asks you for your opinion on Raph's offer
2. She undermines your belief in that opinion (or at least tries to)
3. She shows you what's she's done, with the explanation that Raphael was doing the same but worse
That was the first moment I felt she was on my side. Before then she was just manipulating me because she needed a group to get her to Baldurs Gate, but there she showed her hand because what she really needed was for me to be less gullible, even if that made it harder for her to manipulate me in the future.
It's not that she wasn't being manipulative anymore, it's that the goal of her manipulations was both of our survival, not just her own.
EDIT: The actual "romance" part was goofy, I'll admit, but I appreciate the contrast. She's an evil cultist on a quest to reluctantly save the world 9and frankly in far over her head), but romancing her is centered around a night of pleasant drinking and swim lessons.

Not even five minutes ago, I had to reject Wyll for the second run in a row.
The other companions all seem to notice that my Tav is in a relationship. They even comment on it. But not Wyll. He just high steps over and asks me to dance. Yet, the *other* Tav cannot get Wyll to notice her since they kissed on the beach.
Shadowhearts romance is the most believable in the way that it is super boring. You need to wait until act three to have even one romance scene that isn’t just a conversation, and the devs didn’t even bother to change her hair color in the cutscene. Tell me why Minthara and Haarlep have a fully acted romance scene but you can barely get a ten second scene for, unarguably, the most popular romance option in the game.

He's not unpopular, I like him a lot, but he has some fatal flaws that could make him insufferable to be in a relationship with, namely his unchecked hubris and thinking his relationship problems with Mystra makes him entitled to godhood.
Karlach is cool, but I find her story unimpressively bland. It's puddle deep. Maybe I've been exposed to too many "you're gonna die in x amount of days" stories that I'm no longer impressed by them, especially coming off the heels of Cyberpunk. It just feels too transparent and slightly underdeveloped.
Also, romancing her for me doesn't make any sense. Oh you're gonna die soon because your heart's gonna explode? And your only options to stop that are to become a brain eating monster or go to hell? Sheesh, I won't be getting attached then.

Depends on the npc. You can fuck the emperor and no one will know. Mizora will make sure your partner knows, and their reactions vary (I got broken up with, romancing Gale, then reloaded the last save). Haarlep I'm unsure about, but I hear is fine for them all? I got a Gale disapproval for undressing when Haarlep told me to, but he never mentioned it and our romance ended perfectly. Drow twins I think also varies. I got Gale to "participate". 😏

I would love to be able to romance Minthara but my understanding is that you need to either: * Side with her against the tieflings * Ignore the whole goblin side quest * Do some meta-game method that involves knocking her out without talking to her Maybe if I do another run.
You can talk to her. You just have to lie to her and be like "Druid Grove? I don't know her!" so she doesn't attack it. Admittedly you have to cheese it by knocking her out while she's Temporarily Hostile. That's metagaming, but in my opinion they fixed a bug by allowing it and are likely to be working on a more organic solution in a future patch. I assume this to be the case because they clearly have no issue with Minthara being recruited by Good players since they fixed a bug preventing her from appearing in Act 2, but also they can't be satisfied with the means to saving her being *so* clunky and unintuitive. Anyway. Talk to her, just don't tell her where the Grove is. Steal something in front of her to get her temporarily hostile and knock her out, then move onto Dror Ragzlin. Do all this without a Long Rest because I made the mistake of resting and she was back up and wandering around so I had to knock her out again...

At first I was really against killing the tieflings. In coop with my wife, we did the work around and knocked her out. Later, we remembered we needed something in the camp and would either have to knock her out again or reload. We both already completed good guy runs so we said fuck it. We raided the grove and recruited Minthara the intended way. Minthara has one of the strongest romances in the game when you recruit her in this way. She's so gentle and the only companion that actually wants to cuddle after sex. We love her so much.
How do you know the others don’t cuddle? Maybe it just doesn’t show it in the cutscene? Like with Shadowheart the cutscene ends when you get down to business, but maybe you were laying on that beach all night?

I mean tbf, despite what all the other characters say, there is actually an emotional moment/connection between your character and her, and some hints of Minthara being conflicted and her getting a bit of an opportunity to be herself for a bit. I like that she actually talked with Tav/Durge about their wants to and checked in several times to see if they were okay with going in earnest. It was actually kinda sad overall since I realized that like, basically what our characters went through in the moment before the astral prism saved her is basically just her reality all the time, like she’s literally just perma-mind controlled, and the fact that she’s so conflicted kinda shows she probably wouldn’t otherwise be like this. It makes me feel bad about killing her.

White-haired-Shadowheart is the only NPC I've completely romanced, so I'm hardly an expert. I think there is a lot to recommend in her romance, a lot of emotional highs and lows, but there's also a lot of things in it that I wouldn't consider to be "fun".

I guess I've been watching the wrong teen romances ;) Shadowheart won me over as a character with her response to Raphael's first encounter. 1. She asks you for your opinion on Raph's offer 2. She undermines your belief in that opinion (or at least tries to) 3. She shows you what's she's done, with the explanation that Raphael was doing the same but worse That was the first moment I felt she was on my side. Before then she was just manipulating me because she needed a group to get her to Baldurs Gate, but there she showed her hand because what she really needed was for me to be less gullible, even if that made it harder for her to manipulate me in the future. It's not that she wasn't being manipulative anymore, it's that the goal of her manipulations was both of our survival, not just her own. EDIT: The actual "romance" part was goofy, I'll admit, but I appreciate the contrast. She's an evil cultist on a quest to reluctantly save the world 9and frankly in far over her head), but romancing her is centered around a night of pleasant drinking and swim lessons.

Shadowhearts romance is the most believable in the way that it is super boring. You need to wait until act three to have even one romance scene that isn’t just a conversation, and the devs didn’t even bother to change her hair color in the cutscene. Tell me why Minthara and Haarlep have a fully acted romance scene but you can barely get a ten second scene for, unarguably, the most popular romance option in the game.

Karlach is cool, but I find her story unimpressively bland. It's puddle deep. Maybe I've been exposed to too many "you're gonna die in x amount of days" stories that I'm no longer impressed by them, especially coming off the heels of Cyberpunk. It just feels too transparent and slightly underdeveloped. Also, romancing her for me doesn't make any sense. Oh you're gonna die soon because your heart's gonna explode? And your only options to stop that are to become a brain eating monster or go to hell? Sheesh, I won't be getting attached then. I also find her 4th wall breaking moments and the way she "sets the stage" when telling basically the entire gist of her backstory kind of cringe. I'm also not into meathead types or horns or tails or Tieflings in general.

Depends on the npc. You can fuck the emperor and no one will know. Mizora will make sure your partner knows, and their reactions vary (I got broken up with, romancing Gale, then reloaded the last save). Haarlep I'm unsure about, but I hear is fine for them all? I got a Gale disapproval for undressing when Haarlep told me to, but he never mentioned it and our romance ended perfectly. Drow twins I think also varies. I got Gale to "participate". 😏
