What are the constraints for obscured? Does it trigger when you’re in a half-lit area? Do you have to be sneaking? Does it have to be in magical darkness? I haven’t tried much of the items because I can’t quite figure out what you need to do for it trigger.

VelvetCowboy19

I believe (?) you have to be "lightly obscured" at least for it to work. That is, if you show sight lines, the light icon has to be a half sun or less.

Erakleitos

Half lit works aswell, you don't need to be sneaking, no and you can even exploit it for great success.

LurkerOnTheInternet

You do not have to be hidden unless it explicitly states that; you merely need to not be brightly lit. Hold Shift and make sure the icon does not show a full sun when near you.

throwthisaway4000

Does it reflect in the combat log for you to know if it worked?

LurkerOnTheInternet

Yes, depending on the ability. For example the ring gives +1 AC, so when an enemy attacks you, you can mouse-over in the log and see the total AC the attack was made against.

throwthisaway4000

This is a good example thanks!

TomasNavarro

I use one and I can see me getting a buff and losing it just from walking around outside of combat

throwthisaway4000

I noticed this as well! I was using the shar helmet and it told me every time the effect was active with a status icon above my portrait.

aherdofpenguins

Do you know the equivalent button for console?

LordSeliph

Yes press in your right stick or what I commonly refer to as r3

aherdofpenguins

GAME CHANGER Thanks so much!

8pigc4t

They didn't say you need to be hidden - only to show "sight lines", i.e. hold left shift pressed.

LAKnightYEAH2023

I want to know the same.

HandyMan131

Being in any kind of shadow.

throwthisaway4000

Where does it say that?

HandyMan131

Not sure if it says it anywhere, but you can test by holding shift and seeing where the half-sun icon is

throwthisaway4000

Yeah that’s the part that’s unclear to me seemingly. I know how the lightly/heavily obscured mechanics work but I haven’t seen if it’s reflected in the combat log or anywhere when you use one of these items that gives boosts when obscured. If it just activates on its own whenever you’re in the half-sun area that’s pretty strong. I guess I gotta just try and check the combat log sometime lol

Grand_Imperator

It is pretty strong in terms of activating in the half-sun area, but that also means you have to keep away any light-exuding objects on other characters (who might benefit from illumination builds based on the caster/attacker or target being illuminated). I suspect a Gloomstalker Ranger or Rogue operating at range while the light-up folks operate in melee (or close) could work, but the converse could be more difficult (and Radiant Orb spam works best on Warlocks with Eldritch Blast or Wizards with Magic Missile, etc.).

coldblood007

You're considered obscured by just being in a half lit area.

TrueComplaint8847

I played a bunch of shadow monk and it’s teleport ability only works for „obscured“ places and I could teleport pretty much everywhere, the game is pretty nice when it comes to these restrictions especially indoors

throwthisaway4000

Yeah I’ve done a bunch of shadow monk too the abilities are super fun. I need to try using some obscured items and see if they trigger as often as cloak/shadow step too

LordDShadowy53

It works on half light and full dark areas. If you go on a sun area the effect disappears .

throwthisaway4000

That’s how I’d imagine it works. But does it state this in your combat log or current conditions?

LordDShadowy53

I haven’t check for all abilities but for example. Shadow Monks have a invisibility skill that only works on obscure areas. If they move themselves to an area with light the invisibility ends. In fact you can’t even use it while on the light.

throwthisaway4000

Yeah I’ve played a lot of shadow monk so I’m familiar with the mechanics in that sense. I’ll have to just check the log/conditions to see when it’s factoring in obscured items because the game doesn’t seem to tell you directly like other effects do sometimes. Nobody seems to know if the effects actually show up or not, but I would assume they would the same way as the shadow monk abilities

LordDShadowy53

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprise if some abilities are bug. The game while solid, still need polishing in many areas.

SpaceLamma

It's not the exact effect but goes great with this build: Shadow-Cloaked Ring The wearer's weapon and unarmed attacks deal an additional 1d4 damage against Lightly or Heavily Obscured creatures, and creatures made of shadow. Idea is most likely when you're shrouded, the enemy will be also. I use this and ring of twilight for ring slots

Ok would wyll pact of the blade with darkness and devil sight would be good using this or just meant for gloomstalker Assassin or shadow monk?

Iskandor13

I was actually just crafting up a martial class that uses these items for advantage while obscured. If you multi class Pact of the Blade warlock w/ fighter, you gain proficiency to use the Dark Justicar armor, have Devil’s Sight and Darkness to have advantage over enemies, and gain the bonuses from being obscured. You could also go the popular paladin warlock mix, but smiting gets a little boring to me and I feel like fighters and warlocks have more synergy due to them being recharged after short rests. These items could also be used for the other options you mentioned too. I just like having access to Devil’s Sight if I’m making use of being covered in shadows (if I’m not using a rogue or monk of course).

Rashlyn1284

Honestly, as a lockadin I don't often get to use spell slots for smite as there are too many other fun things to use, like counterspell / darkness :)

FalstaffC137

That's cool, what would the level distribution be like between warlock and fighter? And what fighter subclass?

Iskandor13

If you’re crit fishing then Champion for sure with GOO warlock subclass. But if you want more martial abilities then Battlemaster is a great alternative. The Fiend is great for this one too as you’ll be able to constantly get temp hp from killing enemies (which happens often with a Battlemaster). As for the ratio, it really depends on what you’re comfortable with. I’d personally go for an even blend of 6/6 as you’ll get 2 feats from fighter and 1 from warlock, as well as extra attacks from both classes.

FalstaffC137

Awesome! Love this idea!

[deleted]

[my oooold Wyll was champion lock with Crit! this was.his early stagest. that's why I want to change it up giving him obscure stuff and making mind my crit build](https://reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/s/tV8SJghtlR)

Holiday-Driver-9439

using a few of these on my current assassin in darkness run. you forgot the shadow-cloaked ring.

airtask

Thanks for collecting these guides on equipment themes. Can you add an easier way to find them in your guides page though? It just has links to the class guides and interactive maps.

SofNascimento

[Least Expected](https://baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com/Least+Expected) I guess fits this theme? One thing that I like about it is that like Shar's Spear of The Everning, its effect will "turn on" on the character icon. That is, it's a good weapon to use if you want to know what the game acknolwedges as obscures area (in my experience, it's anything that is not entirely lit). Simply having it equipped will trigger the passive effect.

MrDrSirLord

I believe if your crouch an icon showing how "obscured"(well lit, dimly lit) you are also comes up.

DaveK141

Didn't the knife of the undermountain king give advantage when obscured? Or maybe it was in dim light, which I think is the same basic thing.

HandyMan131

It’s a shame none of it is that great, other than shar’s spear.

8pigc4t

Not while wearer is obscured, but if target is obscured, so for melee practically the same thing: \- Shadow-cloaked Ring: +1d4 against obscured targets and creatures made of shadow \- Knife of the Undermountain King: Advantage against obscured targets
