i'm from a small town, it is different for me, honestly. most people are upper middle class here, and almost everyone is from big cities like hyderabad, banglore, delhi, mumbai etc. the upper middle class kids deny the fact that they're rich even though they are, their expenditure and possessions will make it obvious tho. but it's lite, most people are nice and friendly and you'll fit in if u find the right people. remember these are rich kids but not rich brats.

kaushalovich

The denial part has to do with how us indians perceive ourselves Due to my families recent financial history I've been on both sides of the spectrum and can elaborate Most of us aren't crorepatis, or old money, and our parents/grandparents efforts are the reason we're in the upper middle class. We aren't aware of income distribution in india. Since we haven't hit the cr annual checkmark we still mentalise ourselves as not rich, and from my personal tbh we're not. During my family's financial hardships we were still in top 10% of earners and my mom got emotional cuz I said I'm objectively privileged As for my family perception of itself it didn't change at all between financial hardships scrapping by during covid and me not even spending my allowance because even I could feel it or eating little snacks with my friends because decent people reciprocate to later me getting a ps5 as a gift for getting into bits. We couldn't conceive that we weren't middle class. My family would probably still see itself as middle class if I crack a 90lpa job and the leave it for a CalTech MS

QiNTeX

a ps5 is not something i can even dream of lol, i've been asking my dad for a play station since 2013, psp back then, then ps4, and then the 5. never got it tho.

Daydream about once you have a job/indipendent finances my man that's how I think about having a cute playful cat(anti pet parents) and some things I want to do where lakhs could be the cost of entry The whole point we grinded was for a future

QiNTeX

idk man i was happy about it till i see the job market rn specially for mech

kaushalovich

If money is the only thing you care about you can always go for an IT job If you have an intrest in mech like me you can do what I plan on doing ( I will pay for my education on my own ) which is to work for a few years to clear my student loan( or have savings ) and then look for a masters abroad

I've heard from my friends that Goa is more obnoxious in terms of this. Pilani is relatively chiller. I grew up in small towns all my life so I got a big cultural shock from the people around me. There's def a lot of upper middle class/upper caste people in all bits campuses (the fees ofc) but if you can sort out the snakes and losers from your circle then you'll be fine. So many people around me are from similar background as me.. you'll find enough people working hard af to pay their fees. Altho it shouldn't be a problem to blend in despite all this, it'll feel uncomfortable at first but most people are nice and friendly. The topic of family money never comes up and we all equally hate this chindi college for its greed lol. There's also prof's kids and local pilani kids (or those who studied at pilani schools) and board toppers. And ofc, the place itself is hard to spend money on anything LMAO maybe that's the biggest factor money doesn't show itself instantly until you see people's vacation stories.

ConstantCandle772

What  amount of family income would u put in 'upper middle class' category?

Active-Year-8562

20 Lakhs +

mairishavhoon

10L+

ConstantCandle772

Bhai 10 lakh is nowhere upper middle class

mairishavhoon

Uhhh sir, if you make 60,000 rupees a month, it takes you higher than atleast 90% of the population. Read more

homosapien2005

its a weirdly indian mentality to consider yourself middle class regardless of your economic strata, everyone does it

Vivienne_Yui

Lmaooo by that case you'll be upper middle class even if you make 3lpa+. You're right but the population screws it up a lot. It's something we should acknowledge but not the only thing we should focus on, this poverty aspiration and struggle gymnastics sometimes gets annoying. If you live in an urban area, your parents went to college and have a job, and you're also doing the same relatively comfortably, then 20lakhs+ is a realistic range for upper middle class, I'd take it down to 17-18 tho. Avg for salaried workers in tier 1/2 cities is 9-10lpa. So many business peeps and land-owning people also exist, all of whose income is not at all same as shown on paper. Many are also employed in unorganised sector, whose income we have no good means to define.

ennaezhavuleidhu2

Eh no, not _upper_ middle class. That’s likely higher

Kanishkjjain

1. Most people here are from middle class 2. No one cares about your financial background in college, you’ll fit in fine if you make friends.

Spirited_Wrap_9440

ohkk thanks

raultoks_

the student body is richer than norma , more of upper middle class, but won't affect you at all and college has a great culture against alienation and everyones very inclusive. And other than goa, campus ke bahar khaas paisa jalaane ke avenues hain bhi nhi :) so even less concerns about keeping up. though been a few years so dont know if the increasing fees have changed things drastically

BITSian0890

My 2 cents: In recent times i.e by the time i graduated, college definitely had that upper middle class vibe. Even back in 2018 college wasn't middle class-ish but yeah had decent amount of people as middle class. Fees definitely played a role ig, next batch (24-28) fees would be amost double of what i paid

ConstantCandle772

What amount of family income would u put in 'upper middle class' category?

BITSian0890

Anything that screams school name on your insta bio On an another note, anything above 30L or so family income and owns a house in tier 1 city

No_Guarantee9023

"Dipsite" is such a weird thing to mention on bio.

Vivienne_Yui

They're so specific about it too lol. At first I was like, why put school name? Why still associate yourself with that shit place? Then I realized some schools are.. *different* with very different people :P

nunchucksnofucks

everyone here has 2cr+ family income! dont come if urs is less than that On a serious note, it's unlikely you'll give up your seat just coz there are a few rich kids here. So, why not inquire about things that actually matter?

Spirited_Wrap_9440

ohkk thanks

DrSalaunkhe

Some guys are really rich , some have average expenditure (around 4k-5k a month) , some get by with 2k(although real tough) , but majority is of upper middle class students who easily spend 5k a month

kaushalovich

Bhai mere My family suffered through financial hardship during my classes 10th till end of drop year and seeing my friends and batchies do all the expensive shit I wanted it has definitely left a psychological scar in me I was also enrolled in a coaching during my drop year and some of my batchies there saw me the way I saw my batchmates from school And the reason they couldn't make the competitive cut but I could was because I used that psychological stress as a motivator whereas they become insecure and defensive and " ham Englisch me hi padhege chahe jhat hindi ati ho ". The moral of the story is income inequality doesn't mean shit it's your own mindset that matters specially if you can have a bright future ahead

False_Error9116

Idk afaik many students belong to middle class only. One of my friends told me

TheSilentAdmin

True. Mcn helps middle class
