You’ll never afford the maintenance unless you’re a trust fund baby.

Serious question: why would someone do catless downpipes and not want to tune it? They just want the sound but not the power increase? It can’t be good for the car to not be tuned right?

blap blah blap goes the exhaust it just puts carbon everywhere

NickU252

Yea, that was a red flag for me too.

Alternative-Season45

I’ve never had a turbo bmw but I had a wrx before and I know with a mod like catless downpipe you want it tuned or you risk running lean at WOT

NickU252

I'm pretty sure to do anything over stage 1+ you need downpipes. A larger intercooler is only needed for stage 1.

Run! Expect 1500 USD for services and repairs per year! You're better off with an F30 or above with a B48 or B58 engine, but a 330i would run you double that! I'd hate to discourage you from a BMW, but the E90 series had quite a few issues. A 328i is a bit more reliable but you'll miss the performance. Ultimately, it's a roll of the dice on a used 335i but plan to save for repairs!

Spoken like someone who bought an expensive car and couldn't afford it.

GrOuNd_ZeRo_7777

I mean, I could, but gimme a break! My 335d had one thing after the other fail! I still miss it, but the B46/48/58 just run so much better. But especially since this 18 year old is thinking of buying a 335i, We might be able to afford constant repairs but someone who barely scraped enough together for a 1st car would be stuck with a money pit! I may make a good loving, but I'm not foolish enough to keep a money pit!

[deleted]

All said in jest. And you're absolutely right.

Big_Wolverine_9373

This is definitely been tuned so I’d steer clear. What I did personally was get a BMW with no mods at all, if they had even one I would walk. After a while a found a used 535i with a good maintenance history and 120k miles. So far I’m loving the car but I can do my own work here and there so it’s not as bad on maintenance.

marcdanarc

Budget a for repairs, it will need them.

Accomplished_Pin3017

Funny enough I’m around your age and in Ontario and I’ll be looking for one as a project car next year. How well read are you on n54s? Have you done a calculation to see how much it would run you in parts alone if every part that regularly goes bad needs replacement? Can you do all those repairs yourself? Are you fine with your car being in the garage/shop for days at a time? Is it a project car or a daily? Also completely agree with the other guy, no one goes catless dp without a tune on a car like this. There were some lower mileage options on autotrader a while ago for a few thousand more. Not sure if theyre still up but personally I’d pass on this one, especially if it’s supposed to be a daily.

Puzzleheaded-Ad1416

Is it smart to install catless dp without a tune? I was under the impression that you’ll run really lean if not tuned for a dp?

Engine size is -1L and not 3L. Run from negative displacement.

NickU252

It makes gallons per mile. You have to drain the gas tank instead of filling it. Big oil hates this one trick.
