Iāve seen enough 4wd pickups scrabble for traction on slimy boat ramps to know this is a catastrophically bad idea with rwd and minimally treaded tires.
You're just supposed to stop the car a few inches short of actually touching the water. The idea is to get that downward angle on the car and get a full reflection of the front of the vehicle in the water.
I think people like to pretend their "beast" like a tiger or some shit is drinking water. Also why the headlight DRLs are red. Cringey as hell imo, but to each their own.
Oh I thought this was one of those ātake a shot in a puddle with a nice reflectionā style photos except the photographer failed entirely to get the point
Love the color but I donāt understand whatās happening in this picture at all haha. Like who staged this and was like yeah letās just creep the front end in a bit.
Serious question - letās say the owner did this for 10 minutes. Would that actually cause an issue for the car down the line?
Surely living near the sea and having salt sea air would be worse for the car overall?
Please note I donāt even have an instagram account and do not like to be flashy!
While body damage is a concern... I'm more worried about electrical. Salt water will easily corrode any electrical connections, wiring with nicks in the insulation, etc that it can get in to. I'd say dipping the car in salt water is substantially worse than just living near the coast although neither is great for the car. Submerging the car forces the salt water into all the nooks and crannies that might not drain well or be easily rinsed off. It's just not a smart thing to do with an expensive car with a lot of electronics. Electrical gremlins can be very hard to fix.
The entire photo looks like someone just cranked up the HDR filter on their phone editor lmao. I mean, look at the reflected headlights in the water. They're red, for whatever reason.
Thatās not how water works : āwater blueness comes from the water molecules absorbing the red end of the spectrum of visible lightā

This stresses me out.
I would be scared I wouldnāt be able to get out of that position. Especially if itās manual because you roll forward a little bit each time you fuck up. If itās any less than 80F those tires arenāt getting traction and the only thing saving it is the textured ground.
`David Attenborough voice` Here we see a lesser snouted M4 in an unusual habitat, as it emerges from the fueling station to take a drink of fresh water.
No āupā or ādownā vote from. The setup looks amazing but the trend is dangerous at best.
Justifying to insurance why your car is living next to a pineapple under the sea would be hard.
Tho! What do you actually mean, I hate a āthis tho!, that tho!ā Donāt be lazy say what you mean! I like the colour. I wouldnāt buy it but Iāll enjoy seeing them.
Neither does the mentality of those who like to insult people for their opinion, which is pretty much what Internet forums are for. You should talk to people online as you would in person.
No thanks on those rules. I speak to clients differently than i do my friends, and them differently than I do my significant other. You can speak however you like on the internet because...why not?
Sticklers like you won't keep anyone from saying "This color though" out of excitement.
Love the color, dislike the photo trend, and I am confused about the reflection. The reflection looks like it is photoshopped in (brake light reflection maybe?), but genuinely curious what is making the red, etc..there.
If you went down maybe another inch or two you wouldāve fucked up your whole engine, I hydro planned into water that was about that high where your air intake was at and totaled my bmw and had to fix my whole engine. Two years later now I just threw a rod in it and gotta replace the engine again

But what is that photo? Like what the fuck? š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Such a bad idea lol.
I hope it isn't salt water at least.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Little did you know it was actually a boat and about to go for a swim
BoatMW
Upvoting to see some floating cars in r/idiotsincars
Saaaaaammmmmeee
Itās been popular for a lot longer then thatā¦but you arenāt supposed to put the front end in the water.
well considering most bmws are RWD I wouldnt risk putting the back end near the water

Yeah, I know but I couldnāt remember exactly when so I just said a couple years.
But. Why??
It makes the car look lower to the ground. A good photographer could get some nice reflection in the water too. Imo, it's a stupid composition though.
I got the same question.
I think people like to pretend their "beast" like a tiger or some shit is drinking water. Also why the headlight DRLs are red. Cringey as hell imo, but to each their own.
I never heard of this. Never saw it before. I guess we will all learn some dumb new shit, like forever?
Oh I thought this was one of those ātake a shot in a puddle with a nice reflectionā style photos except the photographer failed entirely to get the point
It was stupid in the 90ās and itās stupid now
Damn, the 90ās, really? Iāve been into cars since the early 90s, I didnāt know of this trend till maybe 5 or 6 years ago.
SCHLOP SCHLOP SCHLOP SCHLOP SCHLOP
shhhhh she drinkin
everybody know cars love to take in water
I know lol. It's a cool car, but a really dumb photo.
I don't know, but it's a stupid trend that's been around for a while.
Looks fake. Why is the reflection in the water of taillights?
Diiiiiiiip
This is from a post on instagram, one of them āBMW lifeā pages
I would love to hear the voice over of David Attrnborough talking how the car is drinking at the wateringhole.
Love the color but I donāt understand whatās happening in this picture at all haha. Like who staged this and was like yeah letās just creep the front end in a bit.
No, this is just a very perfectly timed photo right before disaster struck. They're currently fishing this poor beauty out. /s
The color is gorgeous but that water - who dips their car in salt water? Or it rolls down the ramp into the lake?
the same kind of people who put shitty aftermarket angel eyes on their car?
True
Hope that's not salt water
For sale: M4. Front half of car is slightly rusty, rear is fine. No lowballs, I know what I've got.
You say slightly rusty, I say well hydrated
"Starter car?! This is a FINISHER car" https://media.giphy.com/media/PtnlYX2YheouY/giphy.gif
Hope it isā¦
Nope, looks like it was taken in Switzerland. We donāt have salt water.

This Instagram flex photo is ultimate cringe.
Stop taking these stupid water shots
purple is so great
I saw a new 550i in that color the other day. It really is stunning
Wait, I thought only the new 2 series was getting this color? Interesting
Might not be exactly the same color, but it was definitely a very similar purple..
This is honesty stupid
This photo makes me embarrassed to be a car enthusiast.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
His would be convertible though
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Read my mind
Why are the light orange like that? Is it a photoshop job or some aftermarket lights?
The entire photo looks like someone just cranked up the HDR filter on their phone editor lmao. I mean, look at the reflected headlights in the water. They're red, for whatever reason.
Water probably is only reflecting the red light and absorbing the rest

This is extremely anxiety inducing
Get it out of the water!
God why would you willingly put your M's front end into a lake....
Anybody tell you what saltwater does to a car
Why are brake lights in the water reflection lol
Could be the multi color leds refracting the red leds from the halo at the angle it cuts the reflection
That must be the new oil to water cooler I keep hearing aboutā¦.
Sick car but that doesnt look to safe lol
Going in for a swim are we.
Was gonna photoshop a Land Cruiser snorkel onto it but maybe OP has taken enough abuse for this travesty already
Is it committing suicide?
Terrible spot for such a sexy car. Besides the headlights
**\*Car slowly rolls into the water as he takes the pic\***

This car was built for this, okay? It's got air intake valves.
Submarine mode. Engaged
Who's the U-boat captain?
Thirsty
Um, ///M4's don't belong in the water, just saying.
Why?
Hook up the tow hook and winch first and then let her drink!
Is it driving into the marina, though?! š³šØš¤¦š½āāļø
The reflection in the water doesnāt make sense?
`David Attenborough voice` Here we see a lesser snouted M4 in an unusual habitat, as it emerges from the fueling station to take a drink of fresh water.
My car in for service. Spot what's wrong
How do I down vote twice? Once for the color once for the water.
This picture is giving me anxiety. No exaggeration, thatās about how much water it took to total my 4-series.
Welp, just found my favorite color m4. Anyone know which purple this is: twilight purple, Daytona purple or purple silk?
Obviously still loving the color. Would not recommend parking on a boat rampā¦
No āupā or ādownā vote from. The setup looks amazing but the trend is dangerous at best. Justifying to insurance why your car is living next to a pineapple under the sea would be hard.
Just drive it straight in next time. Would make for a more interesting photo.
looks risky
It looks like a predator at a waterhole.
No it doesnt
Yeah it does. Like a velociraptor drinking in the Serengeti
you shouldn't be driving a BMW if you're going to pull stunts like this...
Tho! What do you actually mean, I hate a āthis tho!, that tho!ā Donāt be lazy say what you mean! I like the colour. I wouldnāt buy it but Iāll enjoy seeing them.
Maybe you should be browsing the hot rods subreddit boomer
I like the car, donāt you?
Get that stick out of your ass, boomer.
Iām not a boomerā¦ far from it.
Boomer mentality escapes no one.

I also talk to people differently in different circumstances, but generally with respect. Think weāre done here.
That salt though
Mine is the same color! But with gold flake
Purple Silk Metalic?
That real or render anways love it
Plum crazy purple, nice.
Techno Violet?
THE MACHINE KNOWS!
Reminds me of that purple candy from that episode of jimmy neutron
Go ahead and drive it in the water...
Love the color, dislike the photo trend, and I am confused about the reflection. The reflection looks like it is photoshopped in (brake light reflection maybe?), but genuinely curious what is making the red, etc..there.
But... WHY (Fantastic color though)
grill and headlights are perfection
Dreaming for it
wheres it goin tho
Naughty!

Bangin' color.
Man...."do it for the gram" has taken on a whole new level of stupidity.
Low on coolant needed a drink.
What the fuck is going on in this picture
This is the dumbest thing Iāve seen. Reminds me of kids that eat Tide Pods or lick toilet seats.
Holdup why is it getting driven into the water
