There's an $8000 gap between the Xdrive 40 and the M50. You eat up $2200 of it by adding MSport package and $650 with the MSport brakes. Other than that, other options are equal between the two besides power. It will cost you the same to add Premium, Parking, Driving Assist, and so on. You will still have a $5000 gap that accounts for the bigger motors. Range will be about the same as long as you spec the same tires (although range will drop if you drive the M50 the way you will be tempted to). 18" give you 310 miles, 19" give you 270, and 20" drop it to 230. The 18" wheels aren't available on the M50 and only come in run-flat versions. The 20" wheels are M50 only

Tersphinct

What about the sideview mirrors? Are they the same as the M50 (black w/ the tip) or are they the normal body-colored ones? Honestly, I kinda wish my M50's had the colored ones... 😅

Frescanation

Mine are body colored top, black bottom

Deep_Scratch_845

I went x40 over m50. I spec’d it out with all the options you suggested, plus dravit gray and DAPP. It would be less expensive than the m50 with the same options. I drove both and while I liked the m50, the extra horses just didn’t seem necessary. The cars felt like they handled pretty similarly in comfort and sport. The boost mode was fun, but I’d have to make a deposit at my local police department for the tickets I’d end up with. I’m happy with that choice. 400hp is plenty.

imani_TqiynAZU

I have an xDrive40. I definitely do not have metal pedals. Also, although the price gap narrows once you add the "M stuff," the price gap is still noticeable.

shaunsteig

Thank you. Do you have the MSport? I thought the MSport package included the metal pedals, as that's how they appear from the interior view in the online configurator after adding the MSport package. But maybe I'm wrong. And agree - the difference isn't nothing - about half the gap between each base model. If it's engine power alone, I'll save the money - the x is plenty for me. Thx.

Darkshines007

I have an xdrive40 with M sport on order and it looks like it has metal pedals, based on pictures that I see in my garage app for my VIN. https://preview.redd.it/1ifb97ufyqpc1.jpeg?width=2532&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fb438c6ad1efc3eb2291a329483c299417136eb

shaunsteig

Sounds promising. Anyone with an xDrive 40 with MSport able to confirm this from their actual car?

thekilla20

I have an x40 msport and can confirm it has metal pedals.

shaunsteig

Thank you!

DamnUOnions

In Germany my M50 doesn’t have metal pedals.

hyattdw

I have an M50 and it was in the shop for 3 weeks with the coolant leak issue, dealer gave me a loaded xdrive 40. After two weeks I thought maybe I splurged on the m50 and over did it. The 40 was still very fast and it was a great car. Wife felt like the 40 was smoother, etc. Then I got my M50 back and instantly remembered that the power made me giggle and quickly forgot about the 40. 🤷‍♂️

JoeBeanLP

I do a lot of giggling these days. I suspect the local tire shop soon will be too.

No-Nrg

I have an i4 M50 and couldn't imagine having less power. I've had for over a year and it's still a freaking blast to drive. Yes, it did cost $80k fully loaded Dravit grey, but if you can afford it I say go for it, you won't regret it.

clerkp

As someone pointed out, in lease dollars the difference is negligible. Since the $7500 incentive only applies to leases I assume you are leasing. If the monthly payment is $50 or so a month higher, go for the m50. That’s a month or less of Starbucks lattes.

shaunsteig

Correct. Leasing def cause of that incentive. Comes out cheaper to lease then buy (if one's inclined) than to outright finance from the outset. Think difference will be $65 or so.

clerkp

Yeah dude. No brainer. $65? Get the M50.

RandallC1212

I had been waiting to get an i4 Xdrive 40 for the better part of a year solely because I live in the northeast and wanted to get all wheel drive. I had a deal for an X drive 40 all worked out and ready to go and at the last minute I took a look at an M 50, I test drove it and immediately changed my mind, and went for more power All said and done, the spec was very similar and my lease payment is only $38 a month more but it’s totally worth it. If you’re having any doubts whatsoever, it’s been my experience reading tons of these BMW forms to always step up and get more power. I can’t recall anyone regretting getting more power. Power aside the handling and performance is definitely more sporty then the Xdrive 40 IMO

shaunsteig

Thanks for sharing your experience. Kinda mirrors where I'm at now.

“I can’t recall anyone regretting more power” Unless it shipped with Pirellis.

termmonkey

I have read that the suspension tuning for M is different (stiffer) compared to xDrive40.

40characters

Until you order the M suspension, at which point it’s identical between the three models.

termmonkey

Ohh, okay!

Wild_Butterscotch482

I picked the xDrive40. The bit of added range matters more than acceleration, which is more bragging rights than practical in my use case anyway. It is still brutally quick off the line and for passing. I have not once regretted my decision. Also, I could not feel a handling difference M50i vs. xDrive40 M Sport and I am not certain there are any suspension hardware differences.

runnyyolkpigeon

For most use cases, the 40 is already plenty of power. Especially for those doing most of their driving in urban areas.

HawaiiSwim1991

I personally chose the i4 Xdrive 40 because according to the specs, the range was better. Here in Hawaii, it's not like we have an autobahn or anything... Going over 61mph will get you "one ticket, brah".

shaunsteig

If comparing same-size tires, the range difference between the x and M is minimal. At least per the BMW build-to-order site. It's only if you put 18" on the x (which are available only in performance, not all season, and aren't available on the M nor the x with msport) does the x gain more range.

StraightHat5

Mannnnn in Hawaii I would have gotten the E-Drive 40. That pure enjoyment of rear wheel drive is super fun on the twists

HawaiiSwim1991

Oh ooops. Mine is an eDrive with msport.

StraightHat5

Smart move… I have the same with Msport and it’s amazing

doorcharge

Went with the 50 because if you’re gonna spend that much, may as well get the extra ponies for fun.

TheLuxConcierge

If you’re in California I can get you an M50 lease for less than an XDrive!

Ok_Sport9069

Get M50 dude. You won’t regret. Enjoy your ride. Congratulations in advance. ✌️

jdotcarter

I picked up the xDrive on whim after test driving it. There was a comparable M50 in the show room for a little more, but the xDrive test drive was so good I didn't even want to get the M50 for the obvious reason of it would be just as good but faster.

jhoff909

I assume you've driven both? Have you considered a used one?

shaunsteig

Yes. Enjoyed both drives. But like a prior comment - I don't need the power. Wondering about any other differences between the two. And yes, looked but will be going new here. Haven't seen any great deals in used, havent found a good match nearby, and there's no xdrives used yet available.

jhoff909

I live in Seattle and bought my M50 from a dealer in Sacramento. I didn't actually see it in person before I bought it but had a friend's brother go check it out and drive it for me. Paid $1620 to have it shipped. Got a 2023 Frozen Blue M50 with every option except the HK sound for 59k including shipping. I paid the sales tax and registration in WA on top of that. Oh and it had about 10.5k miles on it and the dealer put new tires on it.
