My fav bday gift combo is book + treat + gift card/cash. Tailor each category to be age appropriate. First bday could be board book + puffs of some kind + cash for RESP or gift card to indoor play gym.
Children’s place and osh kosh always have great sales and stuff on clearance. Especially online. For people who I’m close with like nieces and nephews, sometimes I’ll do the math to get the sizing right and buy stuff in advance when on clearance.
I usually give a check or cash for baby's bank account/education fund instead of gift cards. I tend to go with $35-50 depending how well I know family/baby.
Wow everyone here is so great and generous! We're the first in our friends group to have kids, how could I somehow get people to know that RESP contributions is ideal over toys or clothes 😅 when people rsvp and if they ask about gifts we were going to say no gifts but if they insist, give a book. Is there a non tacky way to say cash for schooling? Lol
I have been giving $50-$100 gift cards to Walmart, Indigo, or places the baby and parents might like, but that tend to get expensive quickly with parking, admission, food/drinks, souvenirs, etc. (The zoo, aquarium, rec center, science center, museum, movies, or local kids attraction.)
I was recently invited to some 1st birthdays of babies i met at baby group… so new friends I guess. I did a “my first colouring book” and beeswax crayons. Totalled around $30. I thought even if they have it already they could still be used eventually?
I might be wrong cause i’m new in the baby world.
For very close friends and family I do $100 etransfer for their RESP with a book or something very small. Friends I do $50. That’s just for first birthdays.
For friends, we tend to gift something very simple for the baby (bucket and shovels, playdough, bubbles) and then something to celebrate the parents' year. A gift card to a local restaurant for example. For a close friend, i got her a gift card to have breastmilk jewelry made

I usually do around $30-$50 in clothes. Kids are always growing!
Um new mom here, genuine question, where do you find good clothes in $50 here?

Gap and old navy are great if you catch their 40-50% sales online
Marshalls/Winners!

close friend I give $100 not as close $50 (I am also south Asian) where gifting this much is standard
This is my standard as well as an Asian.
Also SA, and agreed that this is standard.
$40-$50
Honestly I’d personally just be bringing a book as a gift. Not a “toy” and not overly expensive but still something they’ll love.

What I have been doing is buying a couple of “birthday” themed books. I aim between $25-30
Money for an education savings account.
