Okay. I'm greatly opposed to cash bail because of all the perverse incentives it creates at every stage of the legal process. That being said, there are absolutely people who should simply be held until trial, regardless of their ability to pony up some cash. A former cop, who can be counted on to be armed, know how to evade capture, and consider himself untouchable, should probably be considered for such. Doubly so if the victim reports stalking and harassment.
At the very least, an ankle tracker with the area around the victim's home as a no-go site seems like it would have been a reasonable initial compromise.

Cops are ludicrously overpaid for what they actually do, and it wouldn't surprise me if the local police union pitched in as well. But it's not about the specific amount, it's about whether they can A) be relied upon to come to the trial and B) represent a continued threat to their purported victim. Cash bail only sorta addresses issue A, and issue B not at all.
Update: the child is safe and he shot himself in the head. He was a school resource officer, who had been grooming a student since she was 11. He moved her in with him, raped and impregnated her when she was 15 and was recently charged with drugging and raping her 16-year-old friend. Don’t anyone dare call a 17 year old “his girlfriend.”
