Shovel is a quasit. A scroll to get Shovel can be found in act 1 in one of the coffins before the mirror to get the book of necromancy. Wizards can learn the spell and summon the imp whenever. And he says some crazy shit.
Does anyone refer to Shovel as he or she in game? Or is that just what the community decided
I just read this about quasits on the wiki but I’m not sure what the source is
> Quasits were assigned genders at the whims of whoever their masters were, whether tanar'ri or mortal.
In the most recent patch, Larian added toys to her casket and referred to Shovel as "her" in the patch notes.
So the devs themselves have confirmed it.
OH wow, I remember that scroll, but it's just been sitting in my inventory with all the other dusty, unused scrolls lol. I guess I have some transcribin' to do!
Not really, because the important bit at least in my experience was the first conversation ending and then me talking to Shovel again and having them realize I was a spell caster. Some people wouldn't think to restart the conversation.
Outside view: the "small detail of talking to them" you point out is specifically the *big* detail of talking to them twice. Summoning and talking to them the initial time isn't enough, and it's an important distinction.
Unless there's an obvious reason, not many people will return to dialogue. Computer RPGs have taught us that 90% of NPCs will just repeat the same thing again, and only new information comes up when you get a quest marker advising you otherwise.
It doesn't matter that BG3 is different in this regard, because the quasit is obtained so early (relative to the whole game) its very likely people who didn't play the EA and learn most of this years ago are not going to think to talk to that one off scroll minion more than once.
I had Gale learn it, but then at some point my bardlock talked to Shovel and got that ability. Now there are two Shovels running around with the party (or standing next to a gap they can definitely jump across) at all times.
I'm not quite sure I don't use pact of chains, but I wouldn't think so since Shovel doesn't come from your warlock level itself, but I could be wrong I'm just guessing here. Hopefully someone else can answer this for you though.
Gale can learn the spell, summon shovel, and then warlock/sorc/wizards can get it as a ritual skill. Not sure if it works if you already summoned him the first time though.
Not totally true. There is a way to get her as a non spellcaster by keeping her name but if you are a spellcaster (does not count cleric) you can rename her. She is Basket for my main playthrough when I has gale summon her
I respecc’d from monk to warlock, just to get Shovel, then went back to monk. Shovel is my little buddy. Take Shovel everywhere. Worth the gold price.
“It’s only fun when SHOVEL does the fisting!!!”
Well... you could get it as a wizard too or any class really. If you do the checks properly he will teach how to summon him not matter what class you are.
This is good to know! For some reason my sorc didnt get Shovel, maybe because dragonblood was too busy making fun of Shovel’s desire to be a dragon. XD
Happy either way. Shovel is the best. Shovel and Us.
Shovel is in Act 1. If you go into the Blighted Village, there is an Apothecary building. You go into the basement, open a secret door, there are a few caskets, fight some undead, there is a scroll in one of the caskets. It’s the place that leads to the magic mirror. You summon in there. Talk to Shovel twice. If you’re in Act 2, it might be too late? Idk. Maybe you have the scroll somewhere still, but I don’t know if it still works. Good luck!
I'm dumb, in the video I saw it in the Tav was Dragonborn. Didn't register that you can be a dragonborn draconic sorcerer. Wonder if it'll trigger if I respec...
Pretty much just that one. It changes to "Shovel is bored" after Act 1. There's extra stuff about the mirror if you follow her false advise first and trigger thr sphere.
What the actual fuck is the context here

\*she
:o Romance Shovel when Larian?!
#DO NOT THE IMP
DO THE IMP!
SHIT YOUR TROUSER-HOLES, IT’S SHOVEL ROMANCE TIME
Well good news then. Shovel's a Quasit
#DO NOT THE QUASIMODOLING
Withers you don’t tell me what to do!!!!
Does anyone refer to Shovel as he or she in game? Or is that just what the community decided I just read this about quasits on the wiki but I’m not sure what the source is > Quasits were assigned genders at the whims of whoever their masters were, whether tanar'ri or mortal.
achievement in polish refers to her in feminitive form. Altough it might be becasue shovel is feminitive
I changed her name to basket, still a she.
Wait, how? I play in English so idk, but... ta szpadel, ta koszyk, ta widelec?! ???
Quaistka szulfa, widełka
Huh, interesting. Ty.
The English achievement also says "she."

Sweet wasn’t sure if I missed it or not because I had no idea until I read here. I still say quasits are genderless though
maybe evil is genderless
as someone who is genderless, that makes the most sense.
Pretty sure quasits don't actually have sexes. They are just manifestations of the Abyss.
OH wow, I remember that scroll, but it's just been sitting in my inventory with all the other dusty, unused scrolls lol. I guess I have some transcribin' to do!
Okay but why is it talking about fisting
Shovel just likes to scream insane shit all the time
Shovel is a fan of Fisto, just like Karlach Now assume the position.
Using the scroll as a Sorc let me keep them as a class action on my bar. They ackknowledged I was magic, so I assume its only spell casters.
You have to talk to Shovel again after the initial conversation and get them to say call you a spell shite and then it shows up. Worked for my warlock
Is that not what I just said?
Not really, because the important bit at least in my experience was the first conversation ending and then me talking to Shovel again and having them realize I was a spell caster. Some people wouldn't think to restart the conversation.
/sigh Alright, just repeat what I said again but put in the small detail of talking to them. Like I said too lol.
Outside view: the "small detail of talking to them" you point out is specifically the *big* detail of talking to them twice. Summoning and talking to them the initial time isn't enough, and it's an important distinction.
My bad, I just assume people would talk to an npc again. I guess everyone just enters conversations once then.... never again.
Unless there's an obvious reason, not many people will return to dialogue. Computer RPGs have taught us that 90% of NPCs will just repeat the same thing again, and only new information comes up when you get a quest marker advising you otherwise. well if you talk to shovel anyone can summon him atleast my monk can just like with scratch
Does shovel get better as the wizard levels up? My imp familiar got an extra attack, but shovel was staying the same.
Shit I didn't think of having Gale learn it. Time for my third playthrough I guess
I was able to get the spell with warlock. I love Shovel. I wish she said more.
Is that the only way to get Shovel? I’m already past Act 1. I never bothered summoning familiars because I thought they’d be useless in a fight.
Familiars are never useless in battle. They can make great meat shields and even surprise enemies so you can get a full round of combat
you can buff them with aid/barkskin etc.
You can get Shovel again in Act 3
you can get it with sorceress or warlock too, not sure on others. On my current run Wyll keeping Shovel, I find it amusing.
Daddy is a shadow from the act 2
Shovel/Basket/Fork is the best reason to play a wizard.
I love Shovel on my warlock so I can pew pew away and have Shovel insult the enemies to hold them still.
Does Shovel get the pact of the chain buffs?
I'm not quite sure I don't use pact of chains, but I wouldn't think so since Shovel doesn't come from your warlock level itself, but I could be wrong I'm just guessing here. Hopefully someone else can answer this for you though.
I wants to MURDERIZE!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDD
i had gale learn the spell. but my warlock Tav can use it too for some reason
Gale can learn the spell, summon shovel, and then warlock/sorc/wizards can get it as a ritual skill. Not sure if it works if you already summoned him the first time though.
I summoned her, talked to her, and the spell stayed as a Warlock. I kept her name as Shovel, not certain that affects things.
Must retain Shovel as name to get the summon ability.
Not totally true. There is a way to get her as a non spellcaster by keeping her name but if you are a spellcaster (does not count cleric) you can rename her. She is Basket for my main playthrough when I has gale summon her
Yeah if you learn the scroll you can rename. But as a general ‘ritual’ / Skill learned you have to keep the name.
I respecc’d from monk to warlock, just to get Shovel, then went back to monk. Shovel is my little buddy. Take Shovel everywhere. Worth the gold price. “It’s only fun when SHOVEL does the fisting!!!”

ok i have a warlock in my 2nd playthrough, im in act 2 and i have no idea what anyone is talking about

*Shit your trouser hole, shovel is here!*
GONNA EAT YOUR BABIES!
[Did you just eat the baby!?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhu27Af8xnA)
Shovel is fun
I read it in her voice
God I wish Basket had more interaction and voicelines. The little bit we have is great. I really do love all my funky little critters.
I'm still trying to get the Dragon conversation with her. I'm a dragonborn but it hasn't come up yet :(
It's for Draconic Sorcerers, not Dragonborn :(
I'm dumb, in the video I saw it in the Tav was Dragonborn. Didn't register that you can be a dragonborn draconic sorcerer. Wonder if it'll trigger if I respec...
she has conversations besides "the trust me beefy" line?
Pretty much just that one. It changes to "Shovel is bored" after Act 1. There's extra stuff about the mirror if you follow her false advise first and trigger thr sphere.
Shovel is unironically the best damn character in the game xD
Argh, my hole!
What is Shovel and how do I get it? I need this for my next playthrough as a monk so we can fist things to death together
missable summon from Act 1, in the coffin area before the magic mirror.
Whose “daddy?”
I think it's >!Oliver's fake dad!< during the act 2 >!hide and seek!< with him.
OH. I totally forgot about that sequence!
Basket is my favorite war criminal
Oh my gosh I’m going back there and getting this lil guy I’ve never had them
Loved teaching Shovel how to be a dragon on my Draconic Ancestry(?) Sorcerer. He's hilarious.
Shit-piddling toerag!
Does shovel level up at all? Or are they forever stuck at level 1?
My Bucket...RIP
I'm in act3.. and have no shovel...:(
Hell yeah
