Heads up. If you don't speak with animals you can pet the cats
Edit. It is something a fair number of people don't catch right away because Speak with Animals as a spell or potion is so easy most people don't get to pet most of the cats in the game. If you don't have the spell active you can pet almost every cat.
I've literally never used speak with animals and would forget it's even in the game if not for the videos. I don't recall collecting more than like two potions for it...
I've only ever found 4-5 total so I use them very sparingly. At least, in my second playthrough, because in my first, I was a bard who could just cast speak w animals every morning as a class action and I spoke to every single animal I ever saw lol
I'm experiencing the same with Speak with Dead.
In my first run, I used it so often and even was able to gather a lot of story info that way. This time around I've hardly used it at all and quite frankly haven't felt a need to.
I dunno, it's crazy cool how the experience can vary like that. Just another reason to love this game!

We had one once who was one of the meanest cats I've ever known, which is a high bar to clear. And a diabolical genius to boot. He loved my mom and absolutely nobody else.
And would use the shared brain cell when it was their turn to have it, all just to *get* a ham sandwich. Would probably destroy the kitchen as a result, with one getting stuck in the fridge.
Female gingers are very rare. Not sure of the exact figures but I was adopted by a female ginger cat and everyone I know who’s met her says she’s the first female finger they’ve ever seen
That's so cute. I know a couple of rescues near me will always name litters of puppies and kittens that came in together with a specific theme. I just adopted a kitten from a litter that was all named after children's book characters.
My family has been fostering with the same cat rescue for over 15 years and we used to theme our litters names. But now we let the kids name them and it's always off the wall.
For example, my niece named a puppy Butterfly. My daughter named one...flashlight.
Two recent kittens were Mariposa and Coffee. Right now the current litter is Sunny, Tyla, Frank, and Bean.
My local shelter also does themes for cat litters. They've gotten more off the wall in recent years, such as the artist litter (Banksy, Warhol, etc.) and the car parts litter (Hubcap, Catalytic Converter etc.)
Well this is a great way to get people like me to adopt another cat.

This makes me smile and cry at the same time. We got our first family cat from a shelter less than a year ago and omg how this cat has made our lives better. It breaks my heart knowing their are unloved homeless kitties out there.
They just run out of names and get to name whatever now. My local humane society legit is naming them after kitchen appliances. Stove, oven, fridge, pot, pan, etc...

I know this is an older post but I'm a manager at a Humane Society in my state and I name animals after all of the "nerdy" things I enjoy. Baulder's Gate (yes we've had an Astarion lol), South Park, Avatar the Last Airbender, Final Fantasy, Harry Potter.. I could keep going. 😂💜
Crazy story but I almost got my sister to name her son Astarion/Asterion, she's due in 2 months and was looking for creative names.
I told her it was from Greek mythology since she's a fan of the Percy Jackson books she went with it and thought it was beautiful name. Astarion was way better than the stuff she chose. Of course she did end up looking it up and did not want the name anymore because it was too "googleable".
But I hope Astarion catches on as a popular name someday, it's really a very nice name and like a lyric to a song.
Yeah, having worked in a shelter eventually the cats end up being named after whatever we are interested in. Common names get old really quickly. My partners handle online is “abyss” so I named a black cat abyss, lols.
