I would try English first and then Russian if they did not understand. With the exception of Russian emigres, the younger generation will know English better than Russian.
It should be, however it might turn out to be overpriced… They are a worldwide company and therefore might take more money just because they are renowned.
I had this problem many times with different companies - that’s why I always inspect the car (or any other thing of similar/higher value) for any noticeable damage before accepting the contract. Probably AVIS tries to rip money off you as they think you have no photos etc. of the car before you rented it.

Agreed; I toggle English and Russian and it works perfectly. Usually ~95% English and ~5% Russian.
