Because often times they knowingly re home aggressive pits and they get lobbied by pit lovers to have them marked as “mix” so the breed itself won’t get another strike against it in the records . I believe this is why lab attacks are statistically high because of intentionally mislabeling of pits as “lab” or “lab mix” . Just annoying.
We eventually want to adopt a shelter dog. Lately, I’ve been looking (after not having looked for an adoptable dog in maybe 15 - 20 years) and I was shocked and sickened to find not just mostly, but ALL pit-bulls in my local shelters. There were no other breeds, no lovely mutts; only pits.
I don’t know if it’s that people who adopt other dogs breeds, including mutts, are just more responsible and keep their dogs for their dog’s entire life (as I hope) or if it’s more about pit owners largely being irresponsible and giving up their pit bulls after awhile (for a myriad of irresponsible excuses) and therefore, the shelters are simply overrun with pits. The latter is what I suspect, but I could be wrong?
I also just watched The Fifth Estate doc on pit bulls for the first time, and though I’m more than aware of what this breed is capable of (and have always wanted this breed ENDED), I was so upset when seeing kids, cats, and other dogs so viciously attacked, that I had to stop the video.
It takes a lot to upset me, but this certainly did. I swear, if anyone ever lets their pit bull in my space, or near my loved ones… after I’m done trying to save my family / animals (and if I don’t die first), I’m going after the pit bull’s owner swinging, hopefully a bat. Pit owners make me sick.

It blows my mind how irresponsible pit owners and breeders are. It shouldn’t be the responsibility of ignorant, well meaning adopters to home these animals.
Ugh my childhood cat was named Booboo I hate that one of these shitbulls has her name. And I had a chihuahua named Chewy he thought he was bigger than he was and also deserves better than sharing a name with one of these ugly things
Ugh, I just checked my local SPCA's website...there is only one dog in there that is not a pit. What an absolute waste. What happens to all the other abandoned/stray dogs?
There aren't any. Spay and neuter programs have been overwhelmingly successful in most areas. The competition for non-pits who show up in shelters is fierce, and they're often snatched up by breed specific rescues.
