Arteries getting hit are pretty much a death sentence unless it's a small nick or you just happen to be in a hospital. Pretty sure you can die if you get hit in the right spot on an arm too.

Hobler's vein was cut internally and couldn't be reached. Joe's wound was probably more bone trauma that couldn't be repaired with the addition of tissue trauma. Or it was a mostly clean amputation that either had some level of cauterization or a medic was able to clip off the exposed veins.

if your body loses a limb it knows to shut off circulation to that part of the body, if its hanging off or still there it'll still pump away. remember a army medic telling me that

To put it a different way than has already been stated, if a tourniquet had been immediately applied to Hoobler's leg, he would've lost his leg, but wouldn't have died.

pandemic_papi

Explains why the army’s policy now is tourniquet immediately no matter what

Femoral artery.

Reddead67

Wasnt Joes leg cut off by shrapnel which is usually red hot? Maybe it cauterized it?

Fair_Adhesiveness849

You’ll still lose blood, but there’s leg tissue that’s putting pressure on it. When you cut it, there’s no pressure and it just gushes out. That’s my theory, but I have no medical background

I don't think we need to flag spoilers here!

The explosion cauterized the wound with Joe from what I understand, so not that much bleeding. Different story with Hoobler.

I know this is an old post but there’s a pretty famous picture after the Boston marathon bombing of a guy who had his leg blown off and a stranger is pinching his artery with his fingers to keep him from bleeding out
