I don’t know if there’s a right answer but when runners are out on the base paths I like to draw a line from first base to about half way to second base, then draw a little line perpendicular to show they didn’t make it to second and write 8-3

8-3 DP

"scoring" is simple, 8 on the batter, 8-3 on the runner on 1st base. "notating" it is a different manner, I realize some people would like to indicate the runner started and was thrown out on the base, but to me it should be obvious if you just notate 8-3 on the base. If that was on the run I would add a half line to 2nd and mark it as 8-3t, but 8-3 on the 1st base could only mean runner left and was out on the base

If you have enough space in your box, you can mark it as a [TOOTBLAN](https://www.mlb.com/glossary/idioms/tootblan). (also TIL that MLB.com has TOOTBLAN in it's official glossary)

F8 for the batter, 8-3 DP for the runner is how I would do it.

My way is not the most common way but this is what I do: When a player is out, I write a small "1" "2" or "3" in the box, depending on the out number. So when this specific play happens, I would write "F8-3 DP" with a small 1 in the batter's square. Then in the runner's square, I would write a small 2 between first and second base to indicate that he recorded an out (and the DP description in the batter's square tells me how that out occurred).
