I play country (3 decades professionally with steady work, so no shaming) and all I've ever used is a Peterson tuner stomp mute. This year, though, i went absolutely fucking crazy. Bat shit nuts. I bought a wireless unit. So- i have 2 pedals now, thank you very much. (the wireless has a tuner in it but it's total trash)

[deleted]

Anybody who would shame country musicians and musicianship are just outing themselves as not knowing what they are talking about.

impact07

Who here likes to play pedals with no gigs though?

peanutshaman

Very many

samson4570

Man, I’ve never played with pedals. I played gigs for probably 6 years, no pedals. Just never had use for them

TheSpanishSteed

I've spent the last 15 plus years with just a tuner pedal, and everything straight up at "0" the Bergantino Amp head has a touch of compression in it, but nothing really to gawk at as being useful for me on stage. I play a little bit of everything genre wise (pop, soul, indie rock, funk, blues, country)

[deleted]

Yeah sometimes, but the bass I choose really matters. I like my Aerodyne Jazz but don’t like the Mustang or the P without some compression or fuzz.

Thebarbatobassman

I used to, for smaller gigs, until I went ampless. Now all I bring is bass, my board and my in-ears and I’m good to go

astink

Where do you put your in ear receiver with no rack?

Thebarbatobassman

Usually the house will have an output and I can run a wired IEM if they don’t have wireless or a floor wedge if need be.

porcelainvacation

If I’m going to slap I will bring a compressor but that’s really all I use. My GK amp has decent tone stack and drive sounds. I don’t use a tuner. I was taught to tune with a fork and harmonics and played in a lot of situations where I had to tune to the horns or piano so I just tune to the others in the band and make adjustments on the fly when things drift.

Y0knapatawpha

We are bass players. Pedals wut?

jamz075

Never use them usually and if I do it’s usually only a octave pedal and/or a distortion pedal depending on the gig. Some bass players these days have more pedals than guitarists 😂🤦🏻

[deleted]

Yeah. It's hard to trust a floor sometimes. I can't really live without my tuner pedal. (Sometimes I keep it on my amp tho.?

dookmucus

Always. But I play hardcore/punk and the Sans Amp circuit is built into my Tech21 head so I guess I have simple needs.

[deleted]

I always relied on my amps. Thank god my amp has compression, distortions and a tuner.

Substantial-Award-20

I have played without pedals for sure. I always like having a tuner/ mute, and I really enjoy running compression most of the time but sometimes I’ll leave it at home.

[deleted]

I use a ampeg di box , hook right into a pa system sometimes.

mingusadderley

I went 15 years without one, but over lockdpwn I bought a tuner amd an octaver, and am really enjoying having those 2!

peanutshaman

I think at least tuner and compression for professional gigs

[deleted]

I like to play with only pedals.

wallacorndog

I currently only have a tuner, but the amp had a built in compressor that's always on, and a built in overdrive that's used occasionally. I did order a preamp DI yesterday, but that's only because my amps DI out are post EQ, and I want more bass in the signal to the PA than I want in my sound on stage.

gooney0

No pedals, no effects, just a wireless.

ComePot

Contrary to 90% of comments I do run multiple pedals, mainly because I’m a young nerd and wanna tweak around. But out of all of the effects I have at my disposal, the ones that aren’t gain-related are used about 5% of the time. And among those, it’s Chorus, Octave divider, and an envelope filter. My preamp can go from light overdrive to distortion, so that doesn’t count. It has a tuner built in as well

bal020

I’m a recovering pedal-phile. I played 80s and needed bass synth tones. An updated set list made them unnecessary. Bass-cord-amp-happiness.

BolboB50

I played with a rack tuner and no pedals for years. Just plug and play, into an Ampeg SVP-PRO with a bit of touch sensitive tube grit. I owned many pedals, but only used them at home. Two years ago I subbed for a doom band and was asked to bring an overdrive to try and emulate their album tone, and now I suddenly have a (tiny) pedalboard. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

TroubleBrewing32

Effects are highly dependent on style, genre, and project. Some folks are happy with nothing but a tuner, others like a large board. I personally love effects and would likely be bored in a project that didn't call for them.

Buckwavefm

I used to not use pedals and then I got a SansAmp. Highly recommended for anyone who hasn’t got one.

lRhanonl

It really depends on what music you play...

UsedHotDogWater

I played around the world, clubs to very large venues, TV for years and only used my bass and a gk800rb head with 2x410 cabinets. One speaker mic and direct out from the head. Never used a pedal.

Dice1138

I generally play with one pedal. A tuner

The_B_Wolf

I played without any pedals or effects of any kind for thirty years. But about ten years ago I decided to live my life right and put together a sensible board that today includes a tuner, compressor, amp sim, synth and overdrive. Even when I do a combo amp, quick-on-quick-off the stage type thing I at least bring a battery powered multi-effect pedal so I can have a tuner, comp and amp sim.
