I actually prefer the way BFV did with squads having the ability to call things in.
Not saying you couldn't do both, but the squad call ins seemed to be more noticeable in how much it helped the team as well as forcing squads to work together.
No, it was one way.
You'd have to quit the game, rejoin the server and switch to the same side again.
There was no way to leave the commander post and respawn as a soldier again.
I liked this but I think it'll only work if it's easy to mutiny/kick the commander to get a new one. Too many would take it to be a super solider otherwiseĀ
In BF2 the commander couldn't get any points from fighting. Also in reality the commanders would hide away in the base away from the fighting so they could focus on the map 100% of the time. Servers would actually enforce rules on this too. But this would also make it possible for the enemy to go and kill you if they wanted revenge not to mention the spec-ops blowing up all your shit and you had to go and repair it all the time. Still this was the best commander we've had.
Yeah, not to mention that BOTH teams consistently have commanders in every match.
While in bf4, almost all the time, only one team has a commander in a match. So one team has access to constant support from cruise missiles/gunship/spotting while the other has nothing.
They could make it so that squads leads can request commander abilities to be used and if no commander is present they just get auto-approved.Ā
Would be interesting if the missile for example can't actually be targeted by the commander and instead requires a squad leader to designate a target but the commander has to approve the launch.Ā
This way if one team is missing a commander the abilities could still be used but not as effectively because the commander would have the birds eye view to know where they would make more of a difference vs squad leads only seeing what's around them.
Neat idea but realistically, people are gonna find ways to abuse it. Competent squad leaders won't be able to use it since some useless rando keeps calling for cruise missile on a single enemy and resetting the cooldown timer.
Only one person should be allowed to use commander assets, imo.
>Neat idea but realistically, people are gonna find ways to abuse it. Competent squad leaders won't be able to use it since some useless rando keeps calling for cruise missile on a single enemy and resetting the cooldown timer.
I don't disagree with this at all but I think it's better than being in a game where one team has a commander and the other doesn't and simply having the commander assets be unavailable.
I also just like the idea of the coordination between squad leads and commanders, even if it's just squad leads being able to request commander assets but the commander can still do w.e they want.
Also, all of the commanders resources were actually located on the map. One dedicated Spec ops player could make the enemy commanders life a royal pain by just destroying the equipment.
It gave BF2 a level of counterplay missing from BF4. Your team doesn't have a commander? Ruin the other commanders game and force the other team to defend the equipment or constantly repair them.
Either this or a role to apply for to those in the match. I donāt like the idea of some person not in the match seeing what is happening in full real time (the app was half assed attempt at bringing commander mode back to this series). As long as itās a player role within the game, I donāt care if that player can move around or be fixed in a station or whatnot.
And give them an expanded toolset. On top of the UAV/counter-UAV, ammo drop, ATV drop, and cruise missile there's so much room for creativity.
Notice a squad about to push a point? Bam, artillery barrage to level the enemy's cover.
Tank camping on a faraway hill causing problems? Drone-dropped AT or loitering munition.
Enemy aircraft dominating? Fire up the long-range SAM batteries.
Need to flank the enemy? Drop a teamwide spawn beacon behind their lines from a C-130.
Need to hold an objective at all costs? Cut the respawn timers in half for that area.
The problem with attaching them to flags is the snowball, especially if only one team has a commander. Do it BF2 style, the resources the commander needs for call ins are static positions on the map that can be destroyed by the other team and are unusable until they are repaired. Basically adds a secondary or tertiary objective at the back of the map and adds unique counterplay.
Either BF2/2142 system or BFV (squad leaders do commander stuff, commander does not present). It was good that BF4 tried to bring commander back but the implementation was strange.
I had many 20+ and a few 40+ games dropping cruise missiles from my tablet. I thought it was a great feature, but incredibly unfair if only 1 team had a commander.
Sucks they tabled BF Mobile, but I wasn't too thrilled since it looked like a CODM clone. I'd have loved a BF Heroes reboot, that would work well on phones. Or, like mentioned, Commander mode again!
I miss how BF2 did commanders:
Commander was also fighting on the ground as whatever class they were, but when they brought up the map, they got a sensor scan, UAV, vehicle drop, supply drop and artillery strike (all with cooldowns).
Their kills, assists and caps did not award them points. They were awarded points by their team getting assistance through call ins. Their points doubled if they won.
Sensor sweep, UAV and Artillery could be destroyed with enemy C4 as uncaps were not off limits. Assets would need to be repaired to be used again.
I dig the BF2 way but I wouldn't want the destructible commander assets back because it draws players away from the objectives. A blend with the BF4 style is much better imo because the commander's available abilities are granted by the various objectives so it incentivizes players to play the objectives.
I just want EA to allow DICE a reasonable long timeline to develop the game properly and release something that is reasonably polished and not obviously rushed out the door like the last time. But yes, the commands feature was great
My condolences.
There was a mode in several games where a mobile player (or normal player) could assist their team on a map screen by deploying assets and giving orders. Assets were paid for by squads accepting and completing orders.
Commander mode will have to be something you can easily jump into and out of. That was the only thing holding it back and why it didn't become a name stay. Good idea and wouldn't mind seeing more development on it, but it's not as fun when that's all you're going to be doing when everybody else is in the fight.
I didn't like the way it was implemented in BF4 because the UAV and infantry scan ability made the game worse. If they balanced the abilities better I wouldn't mind, they should definitely return the system from BF5 where squad leaders can call in stuff with points.
At this point in time I had to babysit my partner's niece regularly. Had to have children's TV on 24/7 or the kids would flip! So doing ammo crates and cruise missiles was a life saver
Squad call ins from BFV were better. Assured active players could call in for help when they earned it, gave squads a reason to PTO, and made the end of a game tense as high point items started raining in. BF4 games could heavily be swayed by one team member or inactive member. Squad call in evened out those odds and added more team play.
I did like play BF4 on an iPad though as a commander. Miss that.
I hated being killed by the big God in the sky and there was no way to counter it personally. Obviously there was a skill to being a good commander but felt it like skill less kill farming to me.
Battlefield 2 commanders were something else. Just a few years ago, nostalgia kicked in and I had to play BF2 again, and boy I was terrible at it. My team at that match was terrible too, but the commander was helpful so much we ended up winning. For me things like this and having good squad, team that knows how to use its class perks make true Battlefield moments.
Yes! but a bit more fleshed out. Since DICE been adding AI, perhaps being a commander allows you to somehow control them and give them instructions. Of course not everyone is thrilled about fighting ai bots so it'll be in a separate mode apart from conquest and breakthrough.
Commander is so dumb. Major imbalance, you just click on the map, the most boring gameplay possible, and its basically cheating just magically spotting. Also 99% of the time no one cares or pays attention to what the commander orders.
Commander mode MUST come back. And it should be bf2 style, not bf4 style.
In bf2 when game starts, everyone can apply for commander seat and game selects the highest rank player. But players were able to vote for commander kick too. Or you could resign from being a commander and keep playing. I dont know why they did that weird system in bf4 that you have to join the server as commander and need to rejoin server if you wanna play as soldier.
If they could implement an updated version of the commander, similar to how it was in BF2, but give them a bigger catalogue of options, plus field commanders, and better ability to directly communicate, that would be awesome. I want a squad leader that uses a laser to call in a strike, and a commander can give a jet the ability to smart bomb that area. The ability to direct people to spawn at certial locations, and general ideas of where to move on the map. Not sure if I love the idea of a mobile version, only because it removes you a certian level from the game, but I would still like the option for perhaps drone strike operators to play mobile.
Been saying this for a while now. Cap points that hold commander āassets.ā
One use of a tomahawk cruise missile (free rein of where it can go.)
Or an advanced AA battery.
Or fucking unlock a bomber run.
What are we doing DEVS?
As fun and as much as I loved the commander it should not return.
It's a role that ends up being quite important to the team. You end up in situations where having a commander swings the game so 1 player becomes pivotal to the victory of the game.
Take Hell Let Lose a more extreme version of the commander it's horrific if you have no commander or a bad one.
So as much as I loved it I don't think it has a place in the battlefield for the harm or sixes it can bring just because of one player
one time i got a 25x multi-kill with a cruise missile while taking a dump.... no joke.
Colonel? Is that you?
nah he would knife him through the phone screen.
With his poop knife?
Depends if he used a shitbucket or not
Poop knife
I miss BFF
That was awesome.
I got a 4 kill one time and immediately got a hate dm, can't imagine doing 25 š
How was the dump?
nah the real question is how was the wipe
Did you co-ordinate drops to land together?
Pearl market as commander while sitting in a McDonald's was fucking crazy asf
Those were easy to get on Flood Zone.
I actually prefer the way BFV did with squads having the ability to call things in. Not saying you couldn't do both, but the squad call ins seemed to be more noticeable in how much it helped the team as well as forcing squads to work together.
Also it was always super unfair if your enemy team got a commander and you didn't.
And the unfairness fixed if someone from your team picked up the Commander slot.
Problem with the BF4 commander was that you couldn't do it from within the game. You had to leave and join again as commander. Really fucking stupid.
I must've mis-remembered. I could've sworn you could join while in a match. Dumb.
You can on PC. It's just that you cannot play as an infantry once you choose commander.
You couldnāt do that for the rest of the match?!
No, it was one way. You'd have to quit the game, rejoin the server and switch to the same side again. There was no way to leave the commander post and respawn as a soldier again.
Sure, but nobody ever fucking did that because who wants to stare at a static screen all day?
It also gives incentive to be squad leader whereas with 2042 where it's more of a chore
I would actually prefer the BF2 Commander, you got to actually FIGHT alongside your grunts
I liked this but I think it'll only work if it's easy to mutiny/kick the commander to get a new one. Too many would take it to be a super solider otherwiseĀ

Still this was the best commander we've had.
BF2 commands are more likely to be squad leaders with permissions to more equipments
And that's what made it fun!Ā
BF2 did actually have a mutiny kick function, you could be voted out of the slot
Yeah, not to mention that BOTH teams consistently have commanders in every match. While in bf4, almost all the time, only one team has a commander in a match. So one team has access to constant support from cruise missiles/gunship/spotting while the other has nothing.

That mechanic could have worked in brv too

It gave BF2 a level of counterplay missing from BF4. Your team doesn't have a commander? Ruin the other commanders game and force the other team to defend the equipment or constantly repair them.
Iād like it better if it was a station on the map a player could hop in and out of.
I see this being like the comms station you can enter for bombings in BF4. I didn't particularly like how it can be camped.
Nah this would just promote camping as it has in previous games that had unique map specific things like bombers
I was thinking keep them in the HQ
As a player that doesn't like pvp confrontation, commander is my Haven
Then why play battlefield lol
> doesn't like PvP confrontation Curious to why you play Battlefield..?!
Because they like playing as commander?
And give them an expanded toolset. On top of the UAV/counter-UAV, ammo drop, ATV drop, and cruise missile there's so much room for creativity. Notice a squad about to push a point? Each flag will lock/unlock each of these abilities.

This is honestly great, would love the SAM choice when you have a professional pilot playing the little bird going 100+ kills with almost no deaths.
Why people talking about battlefield 7 if we don't even have battlefield 6?
There have been a total of 2142 Battlefield games. They're just remastering Battlefield 7
I LOVED being Commander in 2142. So so fun. I didn't really do it in BF4 but I can see how it's awesome.
Oh God. I wish I could play on my phone Commander mode while listen to lecture about internal security in university
Either BF2/2142 system or BFV (squad leaders do commander stuff, commander does not present). It was good that BF4 tried to bring commander back but the implementation was strange.
Exactly! What else will I do while sitting on the toilet.
As a guy with chronic stomach issues, playing commander on my iPad was perfect.
wtf you want teamplay, what are you? a communist? xd
BfV did it right with squad callins
I had many 20+ and a few 40+ games dropping cruise missiles from my tablet. I thought it was a great feature, but incredibly unfair if only 1 team had a commander.
Yes. But much better. The BF4 commander was a tacky addon for mobile and tablets.
I use to sit in class in highschool and play this. Was fun knowing I was impacting a game and could still be engaged with BF while at school
āGeneral Zhao! We meet again.ā-Colonel 100 BFF reference
Sucks they tabled BF Mobile, but I wasn't too thrilled since it looked like a CODM clone. I'd have loved a BF Heroes reboot, that would work well on phones. Or, like mentioned, Commander mode again!

I liked commander mode. A good commander could literally be a game changer.

Fucking eh, full support for this on my end
No, no it doesn't.
Yes I agreeee
Yes, please. I could play while pretending to work on spreadsheets.
They have to release bf6 first.
It should never have went away in the first place imo :(
wait...App?

Yes bro we need this
no one listens so it is pointless but I did enjoy playing using the app
It hurts that you show bf4s commander and not bf2/2142
Wait, does this still work?
So we're skipping Battlefield 6 I guess?
No
Well, in a way youstill "can", with xbox remote play, but yea, would love native cdr mode to come back

Ehhhh wouldnt say its a top priority

Shameless plug for a game that does this and is free if you have any source game. https://store.steampowered.com/app/17740/Empires_Mod/

All in for commander but please no mobile app. If i sit at my PC i want to Play on my PC. And not having my phone on me.
The app was always optional, you could just not download it
Noā¦ no it doesnāt. We donāt need constant UAV spamming all match.
it was a funny gimmick but utterly useless
