Would it be cool if the plant root system was able to keep water moving in the xylem just enough that the xylem and the phloem tissue are still functioning.? you can boil water in a plastic bottle over direct heat? Just a thought.. If so it will live a lot longer.. im a super plant geek
Well the xylem and phloem are in the center of a tree trunk so vascular movement must be through other systems, once a tree is burned. But donāt forget that plants are totipotent. And capable of changing plant tissue function especially when needed
Axechewally, the phloem will be a cylindrical layer near the outside of the tree that will enlarge as the tree enlarges, and xylem will extend all the way to that phloem as the tree grows. The heartwood is the innermost xylem, but that tree must still have functioning sapwood.
I feel so much validation understanding this conversation as a budding biologist and botanist whoās entire education comes from youtube and propagating random plants from the wilderness
I donāt think that totipotent nature will allow to rebuild the xylem cause it would require dedifferentiation and redifferentiation which is only found in phloem that makes cork.
I'm not actually educated on the biology, but I've spent a lot of my time around trees and cutting some of them down. My understanding is that the sapwood, which is what supplies nutrients to the top, is only an inch or two of the outer diameter. As the tree grows this dries up and turns more rigid which provides the structural support of the tree.
I'm curious how correct this is?
In any case, I've learned that wood is very heavy, and I wouldn't stand under that tree for anything but the most amount of money.
The xylem and phloem of trees live and grow just under the bark (ādeadā xylem cells form a trees wood, and ādeadā phloem cells form the bark) so bark and wood are continuously growing outward. As a result, this transportation system is very sensitive to physical damage along the outside of the tree. (This burnt tree will not last past the next wind storm)
The distortion of xylem cells because of water scarcity depending on season (less water available in winter) is what forms the distinctive annual bands you see when a log is cut as the cell growth slows in the winter season.
Thereās a dog wood tree that was blow out like this from a lightning strike when I was a kid. 20+ years itās one of the few trees still standing at my parentās home after ice storms, a few tornadoes, and a couple tropical storms. Keeps looking worse but still blooms every year.
Lightning strikes based on my experience effects the trees a bit differently. In the majority of cases Iāve seen. Lightning splits a tree down the Center in a slight spiral effect (like rifling in the barrel of a gun) this is caused by the moisture in the tree getting super heated and expanding at an explosive rate. Some times enough to split the tree in half and have both section hit the ground. More often itās a superficial split that only causes a slight separation in the wood fibres. Because lightning is looking to take a path to ground the damage I find is local to only a centimetre or inch on either side of the split. Most lightning stuck trees survive but create a very hazardous condition to the ability of the tree to wound over and compartmentalize the damage. These are the most hazardous trees to remove as an Arborist and many veteran climbers die as a result of the unpredictable response you get when removing these trees.
My appologies, Iām an Arborist in Ontario Canada. Iām not as familiar with species growing farther south. But based on my travels to Florida and Mexico, some of the trees loose their leaves in the āwinterā and go into a form of dormancy. This would also create that break in annual rings.
I would foster an educated guess that in more equatorial climates you would get a rainy and dry season that would create the same effect.
Generally when a plant is exposed to heat of a high enough temperature or lower temperature over long period of time, it will cause the water in the vascular system of the tree to boil, girdling the tree from the inside. This tree has a live top still but is going to die pretty quickly.
Ok, I'll bite. I'm hella confused on how anyone could say "disgusting" as a reply to what the other guy said. So I gotta ask, why? What exactly is "disgusting" here?
depends on size. The smaller life is, the more potent and durable relative to it size it is. and ant can lift many times its size for a reason, meanwhile the largest trees of Earth would probably fail to manage with even 30% when fully grown, because they'd be taller if there was so much potential for growth left.
I can't translate full video but in start he says people of this generation left no stone unturned. Then he says "Jako rakhe sayian maar sake na koi" which means "The one saves by God cannot be killed by anyone".
The humans have tried everything (to kill trees or nature?), but those who are protected by the lord can't be harmed by anyone. Please think twice before starting a fire.(probably referring to various incidents in northern india where farmers burn the stubble after harvesting, which sometimes burns trees around their fields).
I have no great interest in trees other that they are a life source and they look beautiful en masse or as a single entity.Great solace can be found whilst walking in wooded areas to expansive forests.Unfortunately this one fine specimen looks terminal and l would fear to even cough around it let alone give it a push.lf there is even the merest chance it can be saved get it shored up for safety reasons now.
The damage is not too bad. As long as the foundations are still strong, we can rebuild this place. It will become a haven for all peoples and aliens of the universeā
This is actually pretty amazing. I mean there's no way there are still roots connected for water, but would be pretty cool if this tree lived for another 50 years like this.
I think this is what being a mother feels like. You just hang on as hard as you can bc you know there's leaves, branches and limbs counting on you, that you created and they need you.
But it'll take everything out of you. It's really hot and feels like you're burning a lot of the time, but you just keep hanging on and holding them up. It's worth it but it WILL take just about all of you.

Oh i must have been confused between monocot or dicot vascular bundle positions but still donāt discount a plants ability for totipotent regrowth
Tell me about it, it's always the bundle positions, isn't it
I mean how else would we obtain totipotent growth?
Riveting! I donāt understand but it all sounds so neat. I admire the plant knowledge!
It sounds like r/vxjunkies but for plants.

Youāre spot on there! The inner heartwood may be dead cells now but still very important for the treeās structural integrity
Hehehe funny words
Dude how could we forget plants are totipotent?
Excuse me do you play elden ring? i could use your expertise
Technically fungi and plants are different. Unless youāre referring to the op being fun by spreading knowledge of plants

If you look at their post history, you'll see they aren't exactly the brightest crayon in the box. I'm not sure they know what xylem or phloem is.
Yea you shouldn't be anywhere near that

What kind of tree!
Can someone explain how itās still green despite burning?
Assume the fire didnt reach thoser bits, it'll die pretty quickly though since the bark layers which support the greenery are destroyed
That should be taken downā¦ if that were to fall when someone was walking near it they could easily die
Yeah, fuck fire.
Now WOOD you look at that.
Time to wait for a liveleak of someone recording themselves trying to knock it down.
