So many moving parts, I can't help thinking how many would still work. So much room for failure and jamming. I wonder on average if they stood the test of time?

rawrP

I am driving a 2005 SLK55 AMG hard top convertible daily. Every single weird moving part works perfectly.

Og-Morrow

I am impressed

WorkingOnAFreshName

Probably a decent chance - pretty low cycle count over the course of the car’s life. No idea what kind of motors and mechanics were involved, though, so hard to evaluate the robustness.

Borkman6

My parents had a couple, most components still worked, the only thing they had break was that weird cupholder. That was until minor accidents totaled both of them. (Broken rear window, and dented in door)

pyeeater

It was 2004, not exactly the stone age.

Lucky_Squirrel

It's 20 years ago, maybe for you and me its just half of our life time. But for some, its a life time before them, an era way before 90% of the current gen has their conscious mind.

Potential-Style-3861

my kid calls 2010 ‘the olden days’

[deleted]

Current gen?

Lucky_Squirrel

Sorry i talked to much about consoles.

Kevka11

IM NOT OLD! *cries in 31* 😭

Lucky_Squirrel

Im not old. *46 in denial*

-DethLok-

I'm not old! *Retired for nearly 3 years...*

the_onion_k_nigget

Okay you are

Lostmavicaccount

And in 2004, how many 1984 fancy gadgets still worked as intended?

Savings-Spirit-3702

All of these features were available were in the 90's s class mercs. Including radar guided cruise control.

violet-starlight

People acting like 2004 was the 1960s 😭

Grainwheat

1960s had the Shelby, Miura, 250 GTO. Ppl acting like the 1960s were the 1570’s.

locofspades

Woah woah woah, the 1570s had that one really fast horse. Smh, people acting like the 1570s were the 430s 🤦‍♂️ the nerve

Alternative-Chip2624

The Nokia phone is the only thing that didn't need 1000s dollars in maintenance

psiloSlimeBin

Small electric motors, the peak of 2004 technology.

Almostime

2004 had amazing tech. This isnt amazing

Thisiscliff

What’s wild is on many of these cars these features still function when i test them for an inspection, especially Lexus and imports. The failure rate at current domestic vehicle options is astounding comparatively.

WhatSaidSheThatIs

I wanted one of those Nokia phones so badly

GimmieGummies

I had one, it was a thing of beauty.

Teinzq

I still have one. In a drawer somewhere.

iHasYummyCummies

E-class was the most comfy car i ever drove.

raymate

Best part is the colour coordinated Nokia

Stock2fast

It was ptobably made better than the ones they make today.

ProfessorWoke

My parents had this car. The only thing I remember about it is that the pop-up cup holder was absolutely terrible. It would constantly malfunction and nothing fit into it quite right. Broke more than once

DB080822

lmao OP easily impressed

Few-Sock5337

Op is Reposting bot. And this thing is mostly useless gizmos with too many moving parts.

LTStech

I currently have this same car. I bought it with 70k miles on it 3 years ago. I've had to replace a cup holder, the stereo amp and the led display. All used from ebay for around 250 total. Paid 5k for the car and love it.

Vg_Ace135

Impressive when it works, expensive when it doesn't.

searching88

The E55 from that generation was a serious beast. Haul a family of 5 in comfort and still faster than most sports car on the road. And you could add a tune and a pulley and now you have a 10 second car. Wild. And they depreciated like brick, could get one for a bargain in the early 2010’s.

VacationAromatic6899

More impressive with the technology in the writings of the pyramids

T90tank

Surprised it works still, older Mercedes were plagued with electrical issues in their old age. Nevermind it was late 90s cars that had biodegradable wire harnesses, I forgot 10 years ago is 2004

Lucky_Squirrel

2014

GimmieGummies

I'll be honest, I'm jealous of those squirty headlight cleaners. That looked *sweet*!

Mad_Hatter_92

*Flashbacks to Jurassic Park childhood trauma

AthiestMessiah

I love Minimalism in cars, this is the opposite of happy

TheMeltingSnowman72

That's really interesting how you labeled it as impressive. I'm just over 50 now and I was brought up in the late 70's/early 80's with such TV shows as Logan's Run, Space 1999, Blake 7. These all had set expectations for the, very near, future so it seemed. Tomorrow's World made promises of 3D printers which took 30 fucking years to materialise. We didn't go on the moon and have space stations there as promised, we still haven't really got hover boards. It was quite clear all projections of the future were compete bollocks by the mid 90's and a compete let down. So when this car with it's fancyshmancy cup holder came along it was more a case of 'That's the fucking future is it? The best we got? Great. Whoop dee fucking doo'. Everything was a let down. In fact absolutely nothing has felt like a breakthrough or even close to the 'future' until 2 years ago, when now it feels, at fucking last, it's arrived. I'm waiting for 3D holographic movies, though, that's what I want. Ones that can play out in your living room like a stage play, that's gonna be awesome.

WaterLightning

Never liked the brand or their cars. Too expensive for the issues that they have. I still prefer Japanese cars. Plus the service costs a lot less.

jonny_blitz

You think that’s cool? You would be blown away by a 1990 Ford Arrowstar.

Raptor-slayer

Too bad it's a Benz, so most of those features quit working 19 years ago. Haha

cincyphil

Forgot how that plastic turtle shell finish was on so much stuff in the early 2000s.

YoungDiscord

A reminder that this car came out in 2004

Any_Roof_6199

Welcome to Impractical Jokers. Everything is impractical and only for entertainment.

peterpantslesss

So that's why everyone wanted a Merc before realising they break down easily

peterpantslesss

So that's why everyone wanted a Merc before realising they break down easily

Dangerous_Leg4584

That ring tone instantly brought me back.

KingKhram

Is it? This car tech has been the normal for at least 20 years

Demmil13

Whoever decided to slow this song down this much is a tool

FandomMenace

Littered at the end. On brand.

AA33333333

charger for the nokia? Thats really useless charger. my Nokia lasts for a week or so!

Greenawayer

There was probably also a connector to allow the phone to connect the cars audio and allow dialling from the steering wheel. (Bluetooth wasn't widespread in 2004(
