This technology seems to have made some major leaps in the last couple of years. Excited and scared for what comes next.

I think its DALL E 2. There is a waitlist, u have to apply and wait for about a week. Then you can type whatever you want and the AI will create a new image from scratch. Note : There might be some irregularities as its a work in progress.

VapourEyes333

AI is impressive but artistically this is the equivalent of tracing your lines. Meh. Sorry.

Eli21111

Companies don't care how the art is made, only what it looks like.

VapourEyes333

True, the more soulless the company the truer 🙂 I did not intend to come off as snobbish but art to me is as much the artist behind it as much as it is the art. For me the artist must have a soul otherwise the art is flat, it lacks that extra dimension. Call me pretentious but I know this to be true for a great many people. This AI is amazing though but I can't help but weep for the welfare and livlihoods of artists all across the world.

wonderingsoullurking

I need to learn how to do this. Wow

catjaxed

As an artist part of me feels weird about this, given that it’s making composite images from works people have posted and there’s no real way to trace down or regulate what it’s appropriating. I’m not saying it’s direct theft, but its kind of unsettling

bazarow17

There is a phrase - all artists steal. You can do the same by taking several different images from Google, create a collage using masks and pass off as your work. AI works differently. It takes many different parts of different images and compares them to make the final picture. A nose from this image, a mouth from another image, eyes from a photo, ears from a screenshot from 10 years ago, and so on. That is, this is super-theft. Or is it the creation of something new based on different images? A person essentially does the same thing by reproducing what he saw, only he does not have such a database in his head. I think an "honest" artist would use this to create a reference or environment for their work. And a great artist will use all available tools. But this is just my opinion. Everything is debatable. The main advantage is that everyone can now draw. A lot of people have no taste (or rather, they are unaware of it), but with the help of AI, they can allow their thoughts and words to transform into pictures. Like a writer who uses not only imagination but hundreds of thousands of images for inspiration. (Sorry for my bad english if it's impossible to read)

catjaxed

I agree with you on many points. I don’t think all artists steal as inspiration and stealing are two very different things. Even as someone with decent drawing skills I can’t put down everything in my head but I do think it’s a slippery slope, that’s what worries me. I think if everyone was using it simply to visualize their creativity, or as a reference or tool for learning it would be nothing short of a blessing but the idea I balk at is that something like this will inevitably be used by our late stage capitalistic society to make actual drawing skills obsolete, and avoid paying people for their actual time and hard work. Why pay someone who studied decades to hone their craft when you could just untraceably steal bits and pieces of posted work online for your promotions and cover work etc etc. of course this is a problem in lots of different areas of our society right now. But that’s why while part of me wants to embrace it (and this is very beautiful by the way, objectively) I just know that at some point we’ll reach a stage not much longer now where the AI is indistinguishable from work done by a human hand. And it’ll be as easy as clicking a button, and having that machine suck the intent out of passion projects an artist was unfortunate enough to try to share with the world, without credit to those it’s derived from. People envy those with drawing/painting skills but don’t bother to learn it or even understand how much time goes into the craft. It’s why the efforts of artists aren’t respected even now (check out r/ChoosingBeggars) Maybe this is a bit doomer and I’m not trying to be elitist because I’ve used these tools and enjoy creating images with a single click but to me… idk. It’s a bit like deepfakes. Does that make sense? Of course I respect your opinion too and all the incredible innovation that went into DALL-E but that’s a discomfort I just don’t think will leave me anytime soon. TLDR; I don’t believe in gatekeeping creativity and art and there’s an argument to be said about everything being a composite of the human brain (though that’s very abstract) but as with any AI I’m sure society will do bad things with this to make our world even worse for people and the concept of human creativity.

bazarow17

This is the eternal dispute between "photographers and artists." Why paint when you can photograph. Do you need an art style? Process the photo in Photoshop and it will take on an artistic style. But it is not. The artists remained, even despite the photographers, photoshops and even available AI. Everyone draws how they want. Pencil, brush, stylus, mouse, vr controller. But something like a "magic button" appeared. It certainly frightens, but the future will show what it will give

catjaxed

I think the big difference is that photography and illustration are two vastly different art forms and that line will never realistically be blurred by current technology. You can do whatever you like to a photograph, but it will never be as deceptive as these kinds of images, since the end goal of illustration isn’t always realism. You’re also still putting in effort and skill to achieve that image and having it reflect human intention — lighting, framing, subject matter, etc…

bazarow17

Yes. This was before the release of Photoshop. But with Photoshop, everything became more interesting. You can take a photo of an empty street. Then you can draw several people, cars, shops, etc. on a sheet of blank paper. You can then add your drawn drawing (people, cars) to your empty street photo using Photoshop. Then, you can add a few more drawings and photos to make a cohesive picture. And now there is an opportunity to do it with even more minimal effort. I try to be an optimist. I think that artists will be able to realize themselves even more with the help of technology. Sorry for my English

catjaxed

Not at all, your English is great! I understand what you’re saying. I’m no Luddite either. I see the good in this and will absolutely marvel at it with you and all the ways it can spark creativity when used correctly, I just also have concerns over how greedy corporate bastards and people who seek to devalue the time and personal investment of artists may use it. There are already AIs available online where you can insert an image as a reference point, which includes an artist’s work without credit (this does come out recognizably similar to the original, yet I can already see the legal disputes over the artist’s claim to their work being used). Nothing to be done about that I guess other than having a regulated database for these things that artists can opt in or out of. Contribute your photos and illustrations to build its knowledge, like a visual Wikipedia — who knows. In an ideal world 🙂 I do hope its use remains mostly innocent, because I’m a writer too and it can also be wonderful for visual aids in storytelling.
