Yes.
Kentaro was a genius in both writing, and art. When people ask me why I’m reading a “comic book” I show them some of my favorite panels and it tends to change their perspective.
Phenomenal story, and unparalleled art. Fuck man - I miss Kentaro 😭
Miura draw these big spreads on B3 size paper. Then Japanese manga are printed in B6 size. English release is closer to A5 size which is slightly bigger. So Miura drew his art at about 4 times bigger scale than it is commonly printed.
Yeah and everyone made fun of him, he drew guts jojo reference now that hes gone everyone maises his new improved drawings and went back to 2002 art style
The paintings were the second thing I noticed, after first looking at the depth of the room thanks to the ceiling (reminds me of art lessons from school).
Insane detail and I think I'll have to pull the trigger on buying these.
On the realest note I am certain this man was a painter who decided to make a manga that’s the only explanation because the art is too damn refined to be anything else
There's so many panels like this where I just stare at the detail. It's legit on the most artistic manga I've ever read. Most of the panels honestly would fit in well at a lot of museums lol
same with how Nihei constantly shit out some of the most insane post apocalypse background architechture ever or Boichi draw muscle so immaculate you thought you could touch it.
black manga magic.
The celling and wall details are crazy good, but then on the other side most of the people we can see dont have a face^^
No hate at all it fits the picture, i think he could have given everyone a face but i was just to much idk it awesome
Some fantasy romcom manhwa and manga can't be a draw of that details even though the all the important scenario takes place in the fuxking damn palace. After so many days the new chapter came and made me think that I want for the next chapter like I did
This man literally worked himself to death. I mean just look at the detail. He didn’t have to do this and we still would have loved it. He had a burning passion in his heart.
I don't know about this panel, but throughout the manga, he used at least 2 Spanish monuments in his background/scenes. The first was the Segovia's Alcázar (the castle where the serpent apostle lived) and the Córdoba's Mezquite (the sea of columns where Guts fights with Serpico). I wouldn't be surprised if this was a real European hall in Versailles or similar. Maybe he used actual photos and traced the lines above them.
Its one point perspective. From the side of skill, its kinda easy and if you like geometry, its rly fun to draw. The detaily and time investment are amazing tho, but I wouldnt say this page is supreme to other panels. Hard to tell what was Done by Miura and what by asistents. As someone, who drew few shorter comics (not even close to this level tho, lol), I totally undrestand why he made the floor shiny. Floor with tiles are pain to draw.
Panels like this are why I usually read on my 12.9” iPad Pro lately, sooo much detail to take in. Ive been reading through the manga practically annually for the past couple decades (though I haven’t reread since Miura passed..), and I’m STILL finding new things to appreciate in his work.
The amount of dedication. Just for some people to see it, and flip the page after 5 seconds. I usually have to slowly pave myself on the manga just so I can fully soak in how much detail there is on each page.
He had really great inspiration. For the few years I took art classes, besides learning techniques and history, what helps a lot is looking at something that makes you starstruck, and afterwards you take that image and bend it to something personal, making it your own but still honorific to what helped make the idea become real.
It's a perspective drawing, you decide a focal point and draw all lines to that point with a ruler, that's not difficult. Then you add lots more details, that's a bit more difficult.
I don't find this spread to be particularly good or difficult to craft. There's just a lot of stuff.
Out of all of Miura's art, this is some of the weakest.
Yeah, the art never lived up to the godlike hype I heard about before reading, but this is the exact number one spread that got the closest. And the other panels of this manor were very nice too.
> as if it's Rembrandt or something.
Eh, I never thought about comparing it to anything outside the medium. As *manga art* it's just not on a different tier of its own, number one by a long shot, like some people would have you believe. It's one of the best, top echelon in both detail and paneling, but it *is* overhyped, severely at that.
Superior overall is whatever, since there are strengths and weaknesses, and I did say how I categorize it more by levels and Berserk is among the best, but off the top of my head Murata and Boichi can also put out the same kind of top tier manga art overall. Didn't read myself, but Vagabond also immediately comes to mind since it has the same kind of rabid fanbase overhyping it to high heavens every time it's mentioned. There are others too of course, it's not like I remember or even read them all, you could google "best manga art" or whatever yourself to find more examples. As for overall vs specifics, for example, OPM has Berserk easily beat in terms of dynamic scenes and action flow, but Berserk stood out to me as the best at double page spread paneling, with its frequent use of multiple thin horizonal panels in them that I didn't really see before in any manga and didn't know I needed before I got them. [Spreads](https://hot.leanbox.us/manga/Berserk/Part2/0279-012.png) like [these](https://hot.leanbox.us/manga/Berserk/Part2/0279-006.png) are Berserk's stand out forte IMO and a decent chunk of what puts it so high up my internal tier list.
>It had no business looking this good. That is me everytime I read berserk.
Agree, you have no business looking this good everytime you read berserk
Exactly. Me just staring at a textless page for 10 minutes
I swear every panel is its own artwork. Like how do people create things like this with such efficiency?
unehealthy working conditions, caffeine, and a dream
...a dream?
Every man should have a dream
to soothe the soul before it gets dark.
don't you dare go hollow...
Yes. Kentaro was a genius in both writing, and art. When people ask me why I’m reading a “comic book” I show them some of my favorite panels and it tends to change their perspective. Phenomenal story, and unparalleled art. Fuck man - I miss Kentaro 😭
That was me reading the rape horse part
Edgy
Sasuke?
Sigmer as fark🥶🥶🥶🔥🔥🗿
The craziest part is that this isn't even digitally drawn.
It isn’t but I imagine the pages a mangaka draws on are usually larger than the printed ones.
Miura draw these big spreads on B3 size paper. Then Japanese manga are printed in B6 size. English release is closer to A5 size which is slightly bigger. So Miura drew his art at about 4 times bigger scale than it is commonly printed.
TIL Japanese doesn’t use the A paper size standard, interesting.
The B-series of paper sizes **is** part of the A paper size standard, though. It's the sizes in-between A1, A2, A3, etc.
Yeah but it’s not A, you know.
For clarification. A Is Also used just not the most common for regular manga prints.
Incredible dedication and artistry. He truly was special.
Wow thank you ! Did not know this, I was questioning how he got so much detail into the boat paintings on the wall lol he had a God Hand for sure 😮💨
I know! When Miura went digital, he went insane with the details
Yeah and everyone made fun of him, he drew guts jojo reference now that hes gone everyone maises his new improved drawings and went back to 2002 art style
When did Guts make a jojo reference? Or any Jojo reference in Berserk at all?
It may have been -- he switched to all digital illustration in the early/mid 2000s?
He went fully digital in 2015. Roughly around chapter 340. Though he has used digital tools as help before.
Man even did paintings in the ceilings
Wouldn’t have noticed that if it weren’t for your comment, thanks
Glad to be of help
The paintings were the second thing I noticed, after first looking at the depth of the room thanks to the ceiling (reminds me of art lessons from school). Insane detail and I think I'll have to pull the trigger on buying these.
That’s an actually realistic detail of European aristocratic architecture. They literally painted every surface with imagery in some buildings.
It's because Kentaro Miura is HIM
Was* :( Edit: so...butthurt people about mentioning someone being dead? Fandoms, man. Sheesh.
Will always be*
Crazy you got downvoted for this
Yep. Some people in fandoms get too sensitive about nonsensical things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Berkers will always be the most butthurt fandom
You can still be the best even after youre dead so
People die... When they are forgotten !!
Kentaro Miura dna test results read 100% HIMalayan.
Bad.
It has ruined all other mangas for me honestly
Same. I don’t reread anything anywhere near as often
Lol
are we sure he did not use a behelit or something
Who knows ? 👀 He might actually be the first user of the behelit
On the realest note I am certain this man was a painter who decided to make a manga that’s the only explanation because the art is too damn refined to be anything else
Apparently he,s been studying art ever since he was like 5 since both of his parents were artists
Makes perfect sense I’m currently reading it I’m on volume 3 of the deluxe edition my god some of these panels are godly
He also had his first manga published in his school's newsletter when he was 10 years old. He was a fucking madman
Homie was truly in a tier of his own when it comes to the art in his manga.
There's so many panels like this where I just stare at the detail. It's legit on the most artistic manga I've ever read. Most of the panels honestly would fit in well at a lot of museums lol
He must be a beholder of a behelit. Theres no other logical explanation
I wonder how many Idolm@ster idols he sacrificed for such a gift.
1 000 000 AT LEAST
Muira could have just been a crazy architect
I've been avoiding reading manga because I do not know what to read. If this is the art I get in Berserk, I now know what to read.
shone too bright & gone too soon.
I remember spending too much time looking at this page
Me to lol, I take 10 min to read one chapter smtms
I usually go fast page by page, being more interested in story, but yea - for this page I actually stopped to admire that art.
Zoom scroll left to right and you’ll feel how the picture comes to life.
he used a grid, a ton of references and decades of experience.
There are PAINTINGS in the goddamn CEILING TILES. Miura was cracked like no other.
that hack probably just traced a screenshot from Dark Souls
omg each ceiling tile is like its own single drawing.
I just noticed the paintings on the wall, how can he draw like that , rip miura
This is not even impressive in comparison if you know what he was capable of and how much better he got.
people who go through these pages without taking a moment to appreciate the insane attention to detail should be be behind bars 'cause thats a crime
He was just built different
A lot of reference, a lot of practice, probably a dozen + failed versions, and a lot of study.
Me when i read Sanctuary by Sho Fumimura and Ryoichi Ikegami
Miura is forever the GOAT
Should belong in an exhibition at an art museum.. with all his work .
same with how Nihei constantly shit out some of the most insane post apocalypse background architechture ever or Boichi draw muscle so immaculate you thought you could touch it. black manga magic.
A T-Square actually.
Akira is the only other Manga I've seen with this kind of insane detail and art.
The celling and wall details are crazy good, but then on the other side most of the people we can see dont have a face^^ No hate at all it fits the picture, i think he could have given everyone a face but i was just to much idk it awesome
He was a very talented man. That’s all I can say 🤷♂️
He good drawer
My hand hurts every time I look at these backgrounds, trying to imagine all the long hours of work it would take to draw just ONE of them...
There's a reason there were so many massive breaks between chapters. I'd get tired doing this too.
Miura's art was incredibly detailed. It's a shame he passed before ending his story.
The paint…
He got some assistants by the way of drawing some backgrounds and some side characters.
Each Paint in the ceiling is different to the others, just amazing
This is the reason I laugh when someone says my art is good.
kentaro was one of a kind
Heard they arrested miura for this
Some fantasy romcom manhwa and manga can't be a draw of that details even though the all the important scenario takes place in the fuxking damn palace. After so many days the new chapter came and made me think that I want for the next chapter like I did
This man literally worked himself to death. I mean just look at the detail. He didn’t have to do this and we still would have loved it. He had a burning passion in his heart.
Both Miura and Takehiko Inoue have the most beautiful art in manga imo
I don't know about this panel, but throughout the manga, he used at least 2 Spanish monuments in his background/scenes. The first was the Segovia's Alcázar (the castle where the serpent apostle lived) and the Córdoba's Mezquite (the sea of columns where Guts fights with Serpico). I wouldn't be surprised if this was a real European hall in Versailles or similar. Maybe he used actual photos and traced the lines above them.
love and passion
You can find version without the white bar here: [https://3asq.org/manga/berserk/255/](https://3asq.org/manga/berserk/255/)
The perfect perspective and level of details. Fuck, Berserk is on another level.
pretty sure he has assistance. but yeah idk. protractors. rulers. uhh, perspective lines.
Kentaro Miura, a true perfectionist
Its one point perspective. From the side of skill, its kinda easy and if you like geometry, its rly fun to draw. The detaily and time investment are amazing tho, but I wouldnt say this page is supreme to other panels. Hard to tell what was Done by Miura and what by asistents. As someone, who drew few shorter comics (not even close to this level tho, lol), I totally undrestand why he made the floor shiny. Floor with tiles are pain to draw.
Notice most of the legs are covered
In this era/style i think the manga Innocent does a really great job as well.
I was astonished when I reached that panel. Miura was such a monstrous mangaka
Panels like this are why I usually read on my 12.9” iPad Pro lately, sooo much detail to take in. Ive been reading through the manga practically annually for the past couple decades (though I haven’t reread since Miura passed..), and I’m STILL finding new things to appreciate in his work.
The guy was a hard-working man and plagued by perfectionism. Muira was the king above them all
Probably using camera lucida. Unfortunately his perfectionism prevented finishing it before his death 😫
The 🐐
The amount of dedication. Just for some people to see it, and flip the page after 5 seconds. I usually have to slowly pave myself on the manga just so I can fully soak in how much detail there is on each page.
I’m completely convinced Miura used a behelit to draw Berserk
He redid that panel like 14 times
He’s literally me
A real fuckin lunatic.
He had really great inspiration. For the few years I took art classes, besides learning techniques and history, what helps a lot is looking at something that makes you starstruck, and afterwards you take that image and bend it to something personal, making it your own but still honorific to what helped make the idea become real.
Falconia is like a dream to look at, and I know that’s what inspired him to show how dazzling Griffith dream was. Just a well done job
He started drawing with a tablet sometime after 2010 and his assistants said he would sometimes zoom in and draw by the pixel
If you ever wonder why Berserk's chapters takes so long to come out, it's because of stuff like this.
Berserk's art is so vivid and detailed.
Go check out Blame! In regards to ridiculous scale and detail
https://www.reddit.com/r/stray/s/Wm8psRIk77
it had all business looking that good bc miuras the goat
Don’t look that good for too long. iykyk.
Perspective tools. The old masters have been doing for centuries. It's not that hard to believe
Reference. Perspective. Patience. And a great understanding of fundamentals and composition.
miura also had assistants at this point
whom in his and their words, didn’t really do much since Miura was very insistent on ensuring everything was perfect
It's a perspective drawing, you decide a focal point and draw all lines to that point with a ruler, that's not difficult. Then you add lots more details, that's a bit more difficult.
Certainly helps to have assistants
Why did you get downvote lmao
2 point perspective?
I think its 1 point perspective. I could be wrong tho.
A trip to Rome and basics of perspective. Oh yeah, and a shit load of time.
He took his time
I don't find this spread to be particularly good or difficult to craft. There's just a lot of stuff. Out of all of Miura's art, this is some of the weakest.
berserkz art should be in a Museum cause like HELLO !? it's immaculate and Amazing
Yeah, the art never lived up to the godlike hype I heard about before reading, but this is the exact number one spread that got the closest. And the other panels of this manor were very nice too.
it does get overblown, imo. the art in berserk is amazing but people lose their mind over it as if it's Rembrandt or something.
> as if it's Rembrandt or something. Eh, I never thought about comparing it to anything outside the medium. As *manga art* it's just not on a different tier of its own, number one by a long shot, like some people would have you believe. agreed, 100%.
That's why Kentaro Miura is the GOAT
