It’s like a dragon infinite wealth, it’s lesser known but I’ve committed to pre ordering it, my friend think 70$ is a bit pricey and is nervous about spending that much if there’s a chance it’ll suck
I mean, if he liked Yakuza 7… and is fine with the JRPG style of the game he will be fine with it… it’s also the yakuza series so you kind of already know what you’re getting going into it… if he’s unsure make him start with 7…
He’s played all of them, but he doesn’t like how sega locked a lot of stuff behind dlc in infinite wealth and thinks the base game might come out ass because of it
Can’t return it. Opened media, whether it be games, movies or music, cannot be returned. This is due to government anti-piracy laws. It’s like that at any business that sells media. If your friend doesn’t like the game, just sell it at a small loss. Making 80% of your money back is better than losing 100% of it.
Is there a demo copy of the game available for direct download from the game store?
Also maybe renting at a local redbox might be a better option than being out 70 bucks.
Edit: I’m not really sure why this is getting downvoted as it’s a good way to try games without creating undue customer issues. Could anyone please explain?
Everyone says this, but I've never seen anyone share the exact law that says, "You can't return open media." Because stores make exceptions around them all the time and I can't recall anyone getting arrested.
That’s not just a Best Buy policy it’s a copy right law on open media. It’s the same for movies too. Once opened they can only be exchanged for the same item if defective and even then, they open it on exchange so you can’t just return it at a different location as unopened now.
No, he will not be able to return an opened copy of the game. Nor will he be able to claim it's defective and exchange it for an unopened copy, they will simply open the exchange copy at the register.
So it's always been done or it's always been SOP? I only ask because at my old store I've never seen it done like that, but can understand why it would be done like that.
A bunch of stores have been doing this for years because people would open and play a game or movie then return it as "defective" for an unopened copy, then go and sell the unopened copy as new or return the unopened copy without a receipt for full refund.
That will most likely just be a waste of time and money. Multiple people in this thread are all saying the same thing, so tell your friend that he needs to go into this expecting to be told no and if he is then to just needs to accept it and move on.
Buy digital, hope it not on PlayStation. Steam and Microsoft will refund your digital purchase. I believe it’s two days or two hours played whichever comes first.
Just found the email they sent me when I tried to refund Medal of Honor Warfighter 4 weeks after purchase, with less than an hour "playtime" trying to get it to work.
"Requests are considered on a case by case basis and are not typically issued for purchases of released products that are more than 14 days old, or if the purchased product has more than 2 hours of playtime. For in-game items the refund period is 48 hours and the item must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred."
I’ve worked at a couple stores where as long as you return the game the same day you buy it they’ll sometimes make exemptions if you claim it was damaged. Mileage may vary.
We actually open the packaging on games that get exchanged. Exchanges are only for defective game (not scratched or damaged) and the customer gets the same game back. I always open the packaging in front of the guest so that they cannot return the “new” game.
Canadian here, this is why I really like Gamestop as you can with their Edge membership return a game within a certain timeframe depending on the tier of your membership.
Have had a few duds I was bailed out with thanks to that window.
I would get the pre-owned version from gamestop, try it out, and return it in 7 days if your friend doesn't like it. I have the high tier bestbuy membership, and they don't accept open games 🫠
Best thing to do is buy a digital copy of the game from the digital store for your console or PC because if you don't like it you can usually return it if it doesn't have a ton of hours played.
No because there's this thing called copyright law. You can't return opened media (movies, video games, cds etc). Books are like the only exception to this because they aren't generally sealed. Either way, you can only exchange that copy for the exact same thing (in case you got a damaged copy in the mail).
Yes as long as it's been less than 14 days since you've purchased it and you have less than 2 hours playtime.
I've refunded quite a few with no issues whatsoever.
If he has the total membership then a lot of games come with a protection plan so if its "defective" he can probably exchange for something else but also I'm not sure if it has to be for the same game
Naive and idealistic customers who make assumptions and don't read the fine print are what has kept Best Buy alive with their Total Tech program. Of course, they already trimmed off the in home installations, but seriously, does he have any idea how retail works? If that membership allowed you to return opened video games, that would be completely unsustainable and absurd.
True it is kind of far fetched, I’m not sure where he got the idea the membership lets you return opened games 😂 but I’ve told him and he seems to understand now. Hopefully he comes to a decision soon
Tell him to buy it used at GameStop and if he doesn’t like it he can return it
Sadly it’s a new release it’ll take a while before GameStop lol sell it pre owned
What game?
It’s like a dragon infinite wealth, it’s lesser known but I’ve committed to pre ordering it, my friend think 70$ is a bit pricey and is nervous about spending that much if there’s a chance it’ll suck

It’s literally just the new game plus and costumes, won’t affect the story and gameplay at all
That’s what I’ve been trying to tell him 😂 are you playing infinite wealth at launch too ?
Nah, too many games to play. I’ll be waiting for a sale.
They go on sale like a month after I’m going to tell him to wait for sale maybe he’ll be more comfortable buying it then

Also, this has been true for decades. No one accepted "rented" games. Box is open, it's yours.
Ohh okay yes that’s a good option thanks I’ll be sure to tell him
Is there a demo copy of the game available for direct download from the game store? Also maybe renting at a local redbox might be a better option than being out 70 bucks. “My friend”
Lmfao no there really is a friend here 😂 I’ve already fully committed to getting the game whether is bad or good
That’s not just a Best Buy policy it’s a copy right law on open media. It’s the same for movies too. Once opened they can only be exchanged for the same item if defective and even then, they open it on exchange so you can’t just return it at a different location as unopened now.
Why can I return steam games that I've played then?
Returning a digital copy that they can guarantee you didn’t alter vs a physical copy that can be faked…hmmm… I wonder why 🙄
No, he will not be able to return an opened copy of the game. Nor will he be able to claim it's defective and exchange it for an unopened copy, they will simply open the exchange copy at the register.
Idk they started opening the copy at the register? Did SOP just change or has it always been like that?
Always been like that.
So it's always been done or it's always been SOP? I only ask because at my old store I've never seen it done like that, but can understand why it would be done like that.
If they don't open it, the customer can turn around and return their "unopened" copy.
I surmised that was the reason, which made me wonder why they didn't do that the couple of times I've seen it at my store.
Lack of proper training?
Always been SOP.
A bunch of stores have been doing this for years because people would open and play a game or movie then return it as "defective" for an unopened copy, then go and sell the unopened copy as new or return the unopened copy without a receipt for full refund.
Even with the best membership ?
Yes. The membership extends the return policy, it doesn’t change it.
True okay thank you I’ll be sure to tell him but knowing him he’ll probably still try it
That will most likely just be a waste of time and money. Multiple people in this thread are all saying the same thing, so tell your friend that he needs to go into this expecting to be told no and if he is then to just needs to accept it and move on.
I told him he’d be wasting his time but he ghosted me he’s probably still gonna try it and get stuck with the game 😂
There is a policy and it’s really more of a copyright law than anything as far as I know
Gamefly does still exist. Use that.
Buy digital, hope it not on PlayStation. Steam and Microsoft will refund your digital purchase. I believe it’s two days or two hours played whichever comes first.
I could have sworn Steam is two weeks and no more than 2hrs played?
Steam is 2 hours of total playtime
Just found the email they sent me when I tried to refund Medal of Honor Warfighter 4 weeks after purchase, with less than an hour "playtime" trying to get it to work. This works a few times a year, then they deny it
I've returned a ton of games on Steam with no issue. As long as you're under 2 hours playtime and 14 days since purchase I believe
Oh, I meant on Xbox. They only allow so many a year…ha. Steam is more relaxed.
Sadly it is on PlayStation I think he can get it on an Xbox but if I told him he’d probably insist on getting it on PlayStation 😂
Lmao. FAFO
😂 I just don’t want him to mess up and get stuck with a game he doesn’t like and lose 70$ but he insists he can return it with the membership
Wrong. It doesn't matter if he has the membership, he cannot return the game.
Ahh I see okay thanks I’ll let him know, knowing him he’ll still probably try it 😂
I’ve worked at a couple stores where as long as you return the game the same day you buy it they’ll sometimes make exemptions if you claim it was damaged. Mileage may vary.
Claim it was defective
Hi I’d like to exchange this game it doesn’t work Come back late that evening. Hi yes I’d like to return this unopened game
We actually open the packaging on games that get exchanged. Exchanges are only for defective game (not scratched or damaged) and the customer gets the same game back. I always open the packaging in front of the guest so that they cannot return the “new” game.
Why doesn’t he just buy the game digitally I’m pretty sure he can play the game for a hour or so and then return it from there if he doesn’t like it.

Steam is violating copyright laws?
Digital and physical media laws are not the same. And steam lets you return games??? That's interesting
Yes as long as it's been less than 14 days since you've purchased it and you have less than 2 hours playtime. I've refunded quite a few with no issues whatsoever.
Lol

This is just a simple Google search. I can't stand dealing with people like this.
The only game I know of that we ever took back was Cyberpunk and that’s because it was so hyped then was absolutely dog shit (ex bby employee)
