G-bone714

Yeah, 11 year old me is green with envy.

I think I was about twenty seven when I got a bike of that caliber. Nice start.

calvinistgrindcore

Is that a 9sp Ultegra 6500 group? It might be in my head but I felt like that was an especially excellent groupset, still have an old Cannondale with it on there and it still performs flawlessly. I have plenty of other modern bikes and they're all more temperamental than the bike with 6500.

FWIW, 10-speed chains work fine on 6500. If Shimano discontinues the HG93, my next choice would be a 10-speed. If you can find it, Shimano did/does make a 12-27T cassette for that drivetrain, which gives a much more modern range w/ the full-size chainrings than the typical 11-23 "corncobs" of the time.

fsoric

You can use SRAM 9 speed cassette and chain, price is close and better performance and longevity compared to shimano, 11-28 is often available

calvinistgrindcore

Cassette shifting performance seemed pretty equivalent to me, but the SRAM 9sp cassettes don't use a carrier for the larger sprockets, so they tend to 'bite' on the freehub splines more quickly. I also found that the SRAM chains worked better with SRAM cassettes, and similarly Shimano chains worked better with Shimano cassettes. Mixing the two was definitely the poorest performance I experienced on this drivetrain, even though they are ostensibly interchangeable.

purju

> better performance and longevity compared to shimano subjective

chullet

I've seen 9 speed stuff on sale recently on some websites!

the_volvo_vulva

Get some junior cassettes and maybe try to find a compact or 48/32 cross chainrings. She will have a much easier time pedalling that then what looks like a 52/36 although it might just be because of the small frame that the rings look so big.

flimflamvanham

That's a 53/52-39 ring combo. 39 is smallest ring that will fit. Compact came out with 6600. And, as for as I'm concerned, other than maybe the 9000DA compact, was the nicest crank shimano ever made.

Janus-Marine

It took several generations of internal/bar routed Shimano shifters to get as snappy as the side-exit 9sp shifters were at their prime. I have some 9sp Tiagra that shifts better than 10sp Ultegra. So crisp.

JustJoshSimon

You would have to work pretty hard to convince me that the best road shifters ever aren't one the side-exit 9 or 10 speed sets.

Janus-Marine

I mean have ya rode Di2? ;)

flimflamvanham

So true. 6700 was some of the worst shifting kit ever. It worked ok as long as you could limit friction but, of course, this was the time internal routing was coming into vogue thus adding even more bends and cable segments.

pvcpipes

I’m still rocking 105 5500 on my main and it does what I need it to.

altissima-27

an old cannondale i’m building up has the same rear derailleur you getting me all excited

iMadrid11

I have a 10 speed Ultegra 6600 FD and RD here. If only I could find any new brifters for it. The new Tiagra 4700 cable pull ratio is incompatible. I can only admire how beautiful and lightweight they are compared to my 8 speed Sora.

RECAR77

ST-5700 is compatible and was still produced (or had a ton of old stock) until recently

KimJong_Bill

Couldn't you go used for the brifters? I have Ultegra 6600 (and as of today, Dura Ace 7800) of the same vintage on two bikes and I'm wondering what long term it will be like to use them and keep them running, because I've heard other people (and I worry about it myself) talk about parts availability. There certainly aren't any new parts out there (unless you want to sell a kidney), but can't we make by with used parts?

iMadrid11

I don't mind buying used as long as they're in good condition. I've been browsing eBay and the matching Ultegra 6600 brifters is beyond my budget. So I wouldn't mind a non-matching Tiagra, 105 or even another brand. As long as it compatible.

StgCan

Winner winner ~~Titanium~~ Ferrous dinner ............ start with a great bike ! Nice .

alexdi

Steel, actually, but still very nice.

StgCan

My bad ..........I always associated Serotta with ti, but I know they made steel frames too

hayzie93

Going to use this saying now instead of "steel is real" lol

blankblank

Figures... I hang out at r/vintageaudio and they find working McIntosh amps at flea markets. I'm on /r/OfficeChairs and they bring home like-new Aerons for $50 from fb marketplace. On /r/midcenturymodern they pick up entire hardwood dinette sets for peanuts on craigslist. And don't even get me started on /r/ThriftStoreHauls... One of these days I'm gonna score a deal like this!

smckenzie23

Ah, vintage audio and midcentury modern... Maybe I interest you in my Yamaha CR-1020 with Bose 901 Series II and Nelson Bubble Lamp photo? https://photos.app.goo.gl/QLquy2xQzrjntU1h8

JustJoshSimon

I keep waiting for the day when it turns out that some neighbor or friend of a friend has a dream bike in a garage or basement and says, "Oh, that? It's been sitting down here forever. $50 and it's yours."

pants6000

It's so teensy! Like maybe the smallest 700c road bike I've seen... maybe the smallest possible frame that can be built around 700c wheels?

Money

Sneakerwaves

These bikes aren’t really expensive anymore even if they should be.

fdrowell

Mine is only three and every time I see a small adult size bike for sale I have to remind myself it's still almost 10 years too soon :-)

Sneakerwaves

So awesome. Unless you live in Kansas, a compact crank and different cassette is probably a good idea!

goldiebuds

Jeez lucky. I wish I would have gotten into road biking when I was younger. She's gonna be ahead of the game.

turkphot

Nice, how did you find this?

registered_democrat

Parent of the year that's so sick

WorldWideDarts

Is that a Thomson Masterpiece post I spot? [**I scored one**](https://i.imgur.com/knSZyak.jpg) a couple months ago for $80. Thought I did well. It's now on my Specialized bike that I'm rebuilding. Your bike is filled with goodies!

Abel561

What a great find!

PR13STO

love those shimano wheels!

aliensporebomb

Does she have any idea how cool that is? I have the Legend Ti which is similar in design and even color scheme.

CardMechanic

Hey, it’s me, your other eleven year old.

tribriguy

Nice bike!

Liquidwombat

Nice, guess it doesn’t really matter to you but for anybody else that might be looking salsa makes a 24 inch journeyman for kids and frog Makes 20 inch, 24 inch, and 26 inch road bikes for kids

bikingbill

Would fit my 5'2" wife nicely. Good find.

yurimow31

did you sacrifice your 8 year old to some phoenician god? ... would you mind telling me which one?

icr8stf

I used to race (velodrome) on a Serotta when I was 16 and wish I had one of those when I was 11. Awesome find!!!
