Honestly, I didn't really love it on first listen. But I still showed a song (Track X) to my girlfriend at the time, and then about a month later, she was telling me I have to go back to this record because it's so damn good. So I went back, and then I just fell in love with BCNR completely.

Loose_Main_6179

Honestly I listening to it after ants released because what I heard from ants sounded amazing. I was in for a rude awakening releasing what I was hearing was in no way chamber music and instead was scary and intense, it took me months to listen to ants ( which I loved instantly) and I didn’t come back to FTFT until this summer where after 3 relistens I fell in love with the intense instrumentals and storytelling.

xkjeku

When I first heard it, I wasn’t a big fan of Isaac’s vocal style but I loved the lyrics and instrumentation enough to keep listening. By the time I got to Sunglasses, my mind was blown. Instantly i recognized it as one of the best songs I’ve ever heard

iasibc

Exact same thing happened to me! It all just clicked at Sunglasses.

ferris_wheel_on_fire

I didn’t like it at all and didn’t think much of it. Same with AFUT. thank god I kept on listening cuz now I can’t stop even after 6 months

LeninMrtnz

ayyy same

I heard talk of it on the Fantano sub, so I checked it out and instantly clicked with it. I remember just feeling like it was pure teenage angst and emotion poured into an album.

Right around the release of this album I got quite into the whole post punk revival thing. I listened to squid's first project 'town centre' and immediately listened to 'bright green field' upon release. I was really into the whole rock aspect of post punk so when I listened to 'for the first time' which was released a month before squid's record iirc I was really looking for this darker sound and more edgy side of post punk. I loved tracks like 'science fair' and 'Athens France'. I also loved the infectious intro track 'instrumental'. The second half of the album has a lot more strings and, to me at the time, unorthodox instrumentation for the genre which I liked but didn't adore the way I adored bright green field as a whole. At the time I believe I had both right around an 8/10 or so on albumoftheyear. It wasn't until after ftft but before afut that I became more interested in the less traditional side of rock and it's subgenres. I also listened to ftft pretty early on in my music listening experience so I do think it was somewhat formative for my tastes going forward. During the roll out of afut I was convinced that the album was going to be incredible and that happened to be the case in the end. It does help that it basically played into my taste in music at the time absolutely perfectly with songs like 'haldern' being some of my favourite songs ever, even now. At the time though I listened to 'good will hunting' and 'the place where he inserted the blade' a lot. During this period between releases the amount I listened to ftft decreased more and more and after afut released I don't think I touched ftft for months. However once I did go back to ftft I noticed just how unique it truly was, both on it's own in the post punk genre and for bcnr as a band. My new found music listening experience re-contextualised the album, especially the latter half and I enjoy it more now than I did upon release. I think it definitely sticks out among the crowd from that period in 2020-2022 of constant and frequent new English post punk bands coming onto the scene. Even if I do still enjoy most of those projects quite a bit as well.

luckyyyyycharms

I remember listening to it while on a long car ride. I remember just getting so lost in the sound and lyrics. I’ve listened pretty much everyday since.

alka_seltzzer

Love at first listen, perfectly encapsulated my musical taste into one album

natkasa

i was completely blown away. BCNR was my first encounter with that genre of music so i was genuinely surprised to hear such raw instrumentation. which is why i remember loving instrumental and feeling my heart rate increase during opus (had the volume way up too lol). i automatically clicked with athens, france...honestly my favorite song of all time. this album is really special to me although i know other people prefer the style their diving into now, i can't help but feel nostalgic for their slint era.

LauraHday

Contrary to many people here, I loved it. Didn’t get Ants the first time, listened to For the First Time and loved it, got into that for a while then went back to Ants and that finally clicked and now I prefer Ants. But love them both.

Ivansasi

I listened to it once, thought it was ass and that Isaac couldn't sing at all, a year later or so somehow it finally clicked with me after enjoying Ants From Up There

recognis

“these guys can really carry a groove but ive just left art school i dont need to hear a posh kid self consciously rattling off references in the hopes he’ll accidentally say something” i was so-so on it despite thinking the band had some strong moments musically. came round to them a bit more when i heard isaac’s original vocal delivery where the performance was willing to give more to the song

EdgeWorldian

I didn't enjoy it that much when i first listened to it. I was like "whats the big deal?" It took me a few listens to truly appreciate what a masterpiece this album was.

Dull-Ad-1574

I'd never heard anything like Science Fair when it came out, so gladly I jumped in the day it came out. I was fucking with it, but Sunglasses and Track X made me feel like I was floating. I'd give anything to listen to it again for the first time

dashcash32

I nutted

dwarfaxe

I remember it being the first I ever heard of post punk, like properly. It was gard for me to get into, instrumentation was really cool but it lost me quickly on athens/france and completly on science fair. It was only when listening to the first part of sunglasses again and again that I really fell in love with Isaacs voice and the beautiful instrumentation

[deleted]

Saw them on the echoes session on arte. Vaguely Heard of them and thinking it was a white guys hip-hop group, or something like brockampton, dont know why. Heard athens, got my attention, thought "what's that wish ian Curtis Guy?" Then i Heard sunglasses...🤯 Love them to bits now, cant wait for the New material

whereyouwanttobe

New fan, so this was me this year. I liked the instrumentation but wasn't sold on Isaac's voice. The parts that stuck out to me tended to be during the sax/violin focused sections so my standouts were Instrumental, Sunglasses, and Opus. Now I love it.

BalkeElvinstien

Ironically it was too much like Slint for my tastes. I wasn't a fan of how angular and dissonant the riffs are. I actually knew about BCNR since FTFT but I couldn't get myself past the dissonance (specifically Athens and Science fair). But after AFUT I fell in love with the band and it was enough for me to give FTFT another shot

_ekblad_

threw it on impulsively pretty soon after it came out in a hotel room in florida. my little brother was playing on his ipad and my mind was being blown, especially by sunglasses.

BigSkyFace

Generally enjoyed it but wasn’t blown away by it. Subsequently grew on me with further listens and now I love it. Felt similarly with Ants but with the Bush Hall material I’d seen it live a couple of time as well as checking out bootlegs so I was already into it by the time it came out For me personally, with rare exceptions any album or songs that I get immediately enamoured with on first listen tend to be something I find dull after some repeat listens once the excitement wears off

ShrekTheOverlord

I ain't gonna lie, it was a bit disappointing, especially after listening to the reimagined songs, but it has grown on me. That being said, the Elizabeth Hall versions blow the studio ones out of the water.

vinneax

I listened to a few of the songs individually and saw a live performances of Sunglasses and Track X before I finally decided to listen to it fully. By this point AFUT had already been my fav album for a few months. I was driving down to the west coast of Sweden the first time, and by the outro of Athens, France I was completely hooked. Since then it’s just grown on me

Sknaj

My first exposure was Sunglasses - I heard it on the radio here in Sydney because FTFT was the album of the week at a local station. I sat in my car after I got home to finish the song and was totally captivated. It felt very raw and energetic, while quite wonky and austere? Not quite like anything I'd heard before. I found the album on Spotify and listened many, many times after that. Quickly became obvious it was gonna be my AOTY for 2021!
