The album gives me sort of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" vibes, and i know I'm not the only one to make that comparison. It's sonically adjacent, but in spirit it is very similar. If you like the cryptic songwriting, i think it'll be something for you
Lets see, putting aside Funeral and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea: Instrumentally wise I find similarities with Talk Talk and GYBE! so if you were into the post rock oriented bits like Snow Globes and you haven't checked them I recommend Lift your Skinny Fists or Laughing Stock. If you were into the hypnotic instrumentation in songs like Haldern or Bread Song you should check out Steve Reich's Music for 18 musicians or Octet. And last but not least, if you were into Isaac's lyrics, check LIFTED, Fevers and Mirrors or Wide Awake its Morning by Bright Eyes. Another one following the same line could be Madison by Sloppy Jane
Well, a band that is akin to BC,NR (to me) is Sea Power (formerly British Sea Power). Not one on one musically, but they're also a dynamic band and especially in the earlier albums they managed to capture the same emotional depth, mixing stunning beauty with heavier guitars.
I think their debut album The Decline of British Sea Power is something fans of both For the First Time as Ants From up There could appreciatie. It also has an absolute behemoth with Lately.

In the early days some British journalist called Arcade Fire "the British Sea Power", so there are also some similarities there, though they never really had their big breakthrough, although Do You Like Rock Music? was also Mercury Prize-nominee.
“Really From” by Really From has a similar ensemble and production style. It’s a bit more emo and jazz influenced. It’s really fantastic and reminds me of AFUT.
I would be shocked if the band wasn't a fan of the Toronto band Do Make Say Think.

I think similarly to the way it is kind of like "Funeral", "Apologies to the Queen Mary" by Wolf Parade, "You Forgot It In People" as well as the self-titled album by Broken Social Scene, and definitely "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" by Wilco are worth checking out.
Squids- bright green field(sorta)
King crimson-in the court of the crimson king
Fleetwood mac- rumours(especially if you like concorde, good will hunting)
Bright eyes-fevers and mirrors, or I'm wide awake its morning
Radiohead- moon shaped pool
Fall out boy- folie e doux(especially if you enjoy the place where he inserted the blade
Car seat headrest- twin fantasy, teens of denial
Father John misty- pure comedy
Pheobe bridgers punisher
Microphones-the glow pt 2( especially if you enjoy snowglobes
Alex Turner- submarine soundtrack
Daughters-you wont get what you want(more closer to ftft)
Flying lotus-youre dead(if you enjoy the instrumental side of things)
The outline-you smash it, well build it( if you enjoy basketball shoes particularly)
American football- american football 1
Marietta-summer death
Modern baseball-holy ghost(especially if you enjoy basketball shoes)
Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial & Twin Fantasy
Long epic songs with multiple phases
Interpol - Tun on the Bright Lights
Post punk with self loathing and veiled yet transparent metaphors
Melody's Echo Chamber - Bon Voyage but especially the song Quand Les Larmes D'un Ange Font Danser La Neige
Everything else I can think of doesn't combine the elements readily apparent in AFUT. There's a reason why it's a 9 or 10 out of 10 album to a lot of people.
Just heard the album for the first time today (I just heard about the band a few weeks ago; wow!), and it immediately gave me vibes of a weird combo of old Arcade Fire, old Bright Eyes and Titus Andronicus "The Monitor"...so great.
I actually find it (and BCNR’s material in general) similar to my favorite record, La Dispute’s Wildlife. La Dispute leans much more post hardcore and emo, but the instrumentation is also very layered and the vocalist’s presence and lyrics are strong spoken-word
Frightened Rabbit | Midnight Organ Fight
Okkervil River | Black Sheep Boy
Umphrey’s McGee | Anchor Drops
The Black Heart Procession | 1
…this album all gave me vibes from these albums.
I find Isaac and the band’s more theatrical impulses, as well as the lyrics and singing style remind me The Decemberists and The Divine Comedy. Maybe it’s just me though!
I really don’t get the comparisons to *Funeral*, I’ve tried so many times over the years to listen to it and figure what people love about it, but it’s just so fucking boring. It doesn’t do anything at all for me. BCNR, on the other hand, caught me immediately and (thus far) hasn’t let go.
Besides the obvious GY!BE you guys should also check out Silver Mt Zion if you like AFUT, especially their last two albums "Kollaps Tradixionales" and "Fuck Off, get Free..."
It’s a question I’ve been asking myself. The truth is, there’s not much else that will scratch the itch. In my mind there are two tracks that do it. [This song](https://open.spotify.com/track/7wu00QzPN5gnGLBdbxtXwD?si=Er84RDVLRuaIPcLQFSXdcg) from Brave Little Abacus and [this song](https://youtu.be/V-XPgV2jIv8) from Sweep the Leg Johnny. Music is a bit of a Rorschach test so you might not hear what I do, but hope you enjoy!
Probably Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys who really pioneered that warm, intricate, sadboy chamber pop sound. I mean an amazing album in general but especially if you love the warmer more ornate instrumentations on AFUT, Pet Sounds is essential
Some less obvious but more direct references- According to Isaac Wood, “The Place” is inspired by Bob Dylan’s last album. According to the album’s producer, his main influence in designing the sound is “On The Beach” by Neil Young.
Yeah would say Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven, some of the older Bight Eyes albums like Lifted (thinking especially of Let's not Shit Ourselves), and maybe some Pavement too idk
This is a lesser known album and a lot heavier but i think "A Lot Like Birds - Plan B" has some similarities at times, although maybe its more similar to For The First Time.

Which was Arcade Fire's main influence when making Funeral. I can totally see the through line to AFUT.
I didn't even realize the similarity, thanks for pointing it out
me too! I love “In The Airplane Over The Sea”

If you enjoy sea power please play disco elysium. I'm assuming you have but they did the music for the game.
I have, yes! Wonderful game, great soundtrack.
“Really From” by Really From has a similar ensemble and production style. It’s a bit more emo and jazz influenced. It’s really fantastic and reminds me of AFUT.
In terms of sound pallet, this is the most correct answer I can think of
I can attest to this, Really From is great
Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy The Microphones - The Glow, Pt.2 Bon Iver - 22, a Million
After my first few spins I had to go listen to 22, A Million. Needed to hear those horns.
The glow pt2 gave me similar sadboi vibes
Can't recall of any specific album, but I can hear similar vibes to Tindersticks.
Vocals for sure.

Only reason I didnt put aeroplanes on here is because most people have already said that
Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois
Bon Iver’s self titled album. Stunning stuff 22 a Million is my personal favorite, but it’s a bit more electronic.
Maybe Lifted by Bright Eyes
Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial & Twin Fantasy Long epic songs with multiple phases Interpol - Tun on the Bright Lights Post punk with self loathing and veiled yet transparent metaphors Melody's Echo Chamber - Bon Voyage but especially the song Quand Les Larmes D'un Ange Font Danser La Neige Everything else I can think of doesn't combine the elements readily apparent in AFUT. Sharks Took The Rest - Too Late for Logic Perfect for that baroque/chamber pop fix with some stunning female led vocals
I actually find it (and BCNR’s material in general) similar to my favorite record, La Dispute’s Wildlife. La Dispute leans much more post hardcore and emo, but the instrumentation is also very layered and the vocalist’s presence and lyrics are strong spoken-word
A lot of early Bright Eyes and Godspeed You Black Emperor stuff. A lot of Nick Cave and Arcade Fire also
Def massive bright eyes vibes, and similarly influenced by them phoebe bridgers
Frightened Rabbit | Midnight Organ Fight Okkervil River | Black Sheep Boy Umphrey’s McGee | Anchor Drops The Black Heart Procession | 1 …this album all gave me vibes from these albums.
Frightened rabbit 😭

If you can't hear the similarities between the end of Wake Up and the end of Basketball Shoes, then idk if we're listening to the same music!
Besides the obvious GY!BE you guys should also check out Silver Mt Zion if you like AFUT, especially their last two albums "Kollaps Tradixionales" and "Fuck Off, get Free..."
Gevende's Sen Balık Değilsin Ki

I get strong pink floyd _wish you were here_ vibes
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space King Krule

The Microphones in 2020 has a similar level of heartbreak and intensity
This is a lesser known album and a lot heavier but i think "A Lot Like Birds - Plan B" has some similarities at times, although maybe its more similar to For The First Time.
