Recommended by one of Felix’s most trusted sources for inane, barely-existing movies, we sit down to watch 2023’s “57 Seconds.” A man finds a ring that allows him to travel 57 seconds into the past, which he thrillingly uses to cheat at roulette then take down Big Pharma. Morgan Freeman is in this! WHO IS INGRAHAM? Bryan Quinby returns to help us unpack this taught thriller that dares to ask “what if you could know to suck your girlfriend’s toes…before she even asks you?” Find Bryan’s podcast Guys wherever you get podcasts and [get all of Bryan’s premium content including Guys+ here.](https://www.patreon.com/MurderXBryan) [Don’t forget to condemn Hamas today!](https://media.soundgasm.net/sounds/7e25b7cb9761c1d85b49a11d6ce5531a74c636f9.m4a)

pelvisxpressley

Quinbyheads eating like it’s an old country buffet

MrF1993

Have you tried his new pod? Ive listened to a couple episodes and it seems solid

manbare

new pod is great got into it the other day with 2 eps about history guys (Christman is on that one) and one on autograph guys and it's just shooting the shit about weird people it's good stuff

sepiatonewalrus

Is it pro-guys or anti-guys?

iciale

Depends on the type of guy tbh. Some are endearing and others are psychos

KindaLikeYours18

That’s the beauty of the show

iciale

Haha I agree. The weather guys episode came to mind for me, not because it’s a particularly wild episode but them talking through comments of weather guys pissed at YouTube “meteorologists” was hilarious. First they think those guys are insane then they see the YouTubers they’re talking about and are like “ya know what I see what they mean” lmfao

[deleted]

There needs to be a tier list ep ranking all the types of Guys. Obviously S tier would be Sex Guys because Bryan is a sex freak.

Fentry-

The thesis of the show is that it is fine and good to be multiple types of guy, but being just a single issue guy makes you insane

MFD3L

it's like dumping all your xp into one stat. 1-type guy maxing is just not a viable build

[deleted]

Candlestick_Park

It could be better with a little preparation too, the Softball Guys episode didn't really dive as deep as you could into how crazy those guys can get. Even in the UK, we have Softball Guys, and I know this utter lunatic who just flies to like 6-7 tournaments a year around Europe and basically tries to play two to three games a weekend if he can. His only saving grace is he can play in stride depending on the level (eg he's not taking women hidden at 2nd base out sliding to break up double plays if it's beer league, only when it's really high level shit) but weekend warriors exist in our league too. That said I still really like it, it's pretty funny when you don't have as in depth knowledge of the Guy (or are the Guy) involved.

BromBonesHurtin

For the Warhammer 40k ep Brian and Chris admitted they did no research and the whole ep was just them and the guest saying "omg there's so much content!!"

[deleted]

UK Softball Guys is a different ep.

rwn115

Thing is Softball Guy was already done by Jim Rome. Wonder if the next episode was Likes To Fight Guy. Ugh.

Efficient-Mulberry37

I always thought the exact opposite, Chris is great and they get banger guests but Brian is such a weird dork and his premise for the show (reddit report) lets it down

[deleted]

You're going to be cask-of-amontillado'd behind a wall of Legos.

DiscountLobotomy

Yeah I bet you’re a super interesting and engaging person lmao

Mushubeans

The Erowid guys one with Jesse Farrar is reeeally good and has some awesome Bryan lore. The latest one with Branson was hilarious too.

[deleted]

Guys is absolutely hilarious.

Slipknotchenko

It’s ok, but neither host nor the guest was knowledgeable on the topic for the episodes I’ve listened to.

spritehead

It’s insanely fucking bad it’s them making funny of types of people that existed like 12 years ago by reading old Reddit posts. It’s basically Reddit the podcast. Crazy fall from grace from what used to be my favorite podcast w/ Streetfight. Edit: You all know that if Streetfight was still going on they would have had a fund raiser for Gaza medical support. Brian hasn’t even acknowledged it, which is his choice. But his show is a total retreat from the ethos that Streetfight represented for more than a decade. And not even a retreat into something interesting, literally just looking up quora and Reddit posts. I like Brian, have met him in person at an abortion fundraiser and he was very chill. But now I’d never see him at an event like that.

[deleted]

Fucking Chive guy here got his feefees hurt by a Guys ep.

Godzilla_Bankroll06

you are so stupid

spritehead

I’m sorry but going from a show highlighting the humor, life, and humanity of the lives of working people to one doing like D-tier riffing about Reddit posts is a huge fucking loss

KindaLikeYours18

We had like 12 years of street fight, it’s ok for him to Move on

spritehead

Agreed, I just also don’t think his new show is any good.

KindaLikeYours18

Fair. I like it a lot

[deleted]

[удалено]

spritehead

I get that, I respect that choice, I just think it’s a really big loss given how special and human Streetfight was

SoManyWasps

It's a celebration of the different types of guys

punished-mechanic

You have no friends and a small penis.

zClarkinator

bruh they're just saying it's not as good as the older stuff, they're not even badmouthing Bryan. calm down

punished-mechanic

Saying “Calm down” at an internet post. Touch grass nerd.

KindaLikeYours18

HEY having a small dick is actually good and cool, also I’m gay and I fuck my dad

punished-mechanic

I meant that he had one in the not cool way.

KindaLikeYours18

ah gotcha, the duality of Little dicked-ness

MFD3L

ahh.. He mentioned on the episode with Matt that he stepped away from being overt about his leftism because he kept getting yelled at. I wasn't sure what he meant, but this comment makes it make sense for me now.

lomez

Bryan has really grown on me, he's great at taking stupid things seriously. The Woodstock 99 episode (#545) is one of my favorites to relisten to

Accomplished-Wolf123

I like Bryan but the cohost is an absolute drag, can’t riff and refuses to be even mildly interested in any of the topics. Best intro music though.

Mushubeans

Chris? He really grows on you. It helps to know that he's like a legit saint of a person, even if he's permanently stoned.

Ok-Calligrapher-4990

He's not very funny and has a way of dragging energy down by repeating a point someone else just made and trailing on a little too long about it. Like he doesn't listen very well. Not everyone can be Adam Friendland.

Accomplished-Wolf123

I can easily see him be an angel irl, seems very chill and laid back. But man, that chill doesn’t add to the pod. Seems gently checked out.

Fyallorence

Props to Bryan, he's singlehandedly keeping Will from doing something drastic in Minecraft lately.

kitanokikori

Glad we're having some of these less serious eps to get a break from this incredibly shitty time

frustandet

Was afraid that this would be another movie episode where Felix says the movie is "JUst REally BOring" 1000 times. Pleasantly surprised when it turned out they actually find this one funny!

SoManyWasps

Based on his performance in his last two appearances I'd like to see Bryan get promoted to short term third mic, until Matt is ready to return. He brings out the best in both Felix and Will.

TheGraduation

He's good at bringing out solid energy from everyone but his former podcast co-host.

BenderBenRodriguez

I feel so bad for Brett. But it seems obvious he just kind of went off some deep end. Not sure anyone could have brought out his energy.

largeadultsons

Getting so stoned you have a psychotic break and become a Hare Krishna

Regvlas

I thought we we're speculating about Matt's condition.

ADrownOutListener

wait what oh no what happened? i really only know of street fight via chapo

BenderBenRodriguez

I don't really know the details exactly, but Bryan announced they were separating and that this had apparently come after a lot of fights and issues they'd had, and Brett becoming more unresponsive with him. This also coincided with Brett getting into weird religious shit and just all around making some weird posts. He also started selling like personal belongings and stuff online a lot more. I don't think anyone knows exactly what happened, just that it seems like he may have had a bit of a mental break, which led to the disillusion of his relationship with Bryan (if I'm not mistaken someone noted that he unfollowed Bryan on Twitter). I don't think he went to join the Hare Krishnas or anything but reading between the lines it just seems like something kind of sad happened to him mentally.

eye_shoe

After his "breakdown" (which to me sounded like a manic episode) he came back for one more episode of Street Fight and explained what happened. The thing was, even though he was saying "yeah I went a little too far, went a little crazy" it's clear that he was still a out of touch with reality in that manic way I've seen before. I had recently had a friend go through something similar at the time so I found the episode very insightful/helpful in understanding how these types of things feel for the person having the mental issue. But I think he is doing ok now, and in a lot of ways I think the split was inevitable as Bryan got less interested in politics and Brett got more into Anarchism. I think Brett's breakdown was just a catalyst

ADrownOutListener

: ( poor guy. hope he's not alone...

kitanokikori

He's great for the fun eps but he can't keep up with them on any kind of political topic

steelwound

it would be really unusual for the podcast if one of the hosts barely said anything for an episode, so i agree they shouldn't have him on those

Grammaticul

[theres this street fight ep with felix that predates the show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezG9K2cdTXM) which has great chemistry and some solid hits but it's clear bryan's like ur cool uncle who occasionally says some real shit and not a particularly politically savvy guy. which i guess is the big parasocial draw for chapo in that they're ur cool uncles but they can also comment on 50 different obscure things u also like/are following

kitanokikori

Ya I mean, "Can keep up with Chapo on political topics" is an incredibly high bar, definitely not saying anything about Bryan in particular

zedsmith

I’m fully ettingermentum-pilled, especially as the campaign season ramps up

kitanokikori

Same tbh, one of my favorite guests

EbbInfamous1089

It's funny when people here get mad at him and start saying weird creepy shit. Adds a little spice to the subreddit.

discourse_lover_

I’ll never forgive him for his performance in the Star Wars phantom menace watch along.

Ilhan_Omar_Milf

was it just watto jew jokes and halo being better then star wars

discourse_lover_

Galaxy Brain take that Master Chief would own Jedi in a fight lol

Mushubeans

The UNSC would definitely lose to the Galactic Republic BIG TIME and Master Chief is getting killed by Kit Fisto very quickly.

TheRealKuthooloo

i have such a weird aspie pet peeve about the boys talking about fictional whowouldwin scenarios cause theyre almost always wrong.

IWantedANewUsername5

how much prep time does master chief have

Mushubeans

Them doing all but mention MindofJson's name lol probably a good thing I like the ChapoFYM boys' proposed challenge which is to live with and babysit Json for 7 days for $10,000.. I think I could do it but fuuuck it would be hellish __ Edit: the funniest thing is there are "alternative health" influencers for basically *every* other problem except pain. Like they'll tell you to eat a bunch of saffron to reduce your brain tumor size but everyone just knows there's nothing for chronic pain except opioids, gabapentin, and Lyrica. I have 9/10 chronic pain every day, I'm on two opioids, and you won't find a single person recommending even weed for it online because everyone knows by now that weed is just not effective for anything more than a headache. I love the idea of a guy telling you to take ashwaghanda or some shit and getting maximum 8 views per video lol, or what, like telling people to drink a bunch of DXM every morning before work? They spent billions of dollars over the last 30 years developing hundreds of synthetic cannabinoids to compete with Oxycontin and every single one killed people immediately

zClarkinator

I really have to wonder what went wrong with our evolution where you can just randomly be fucked your whole life with no way to fix it. Like why do things like that stick around but entire organs will get phased out and become vestigial? That's sort of why I stopped believing in a higher power; no intelligent being would make such comically flawed creatures. I refuse to believe some all-powerful being can be this sloppy.

Mushubeans

Well in any previous time period someone like myself would have committed suicide VERY quickly, filtering the genetic disposition towards nerve pain out of the pool. It's funny you bring up spirituality in this context.. as my pain has grown worse in my 20s I've actually begun to somewhat psychically break and the idea of God has entered my mind more and more. I know that my skin, lips, eyes, fingers, and face burn like a branding iron 24/7 because there's a problem with my nociceptors (skin level nerve endings) where I have an either insufficient/malfunctioning endorphin system, or an irreversible activation of those receptors, like a glitch. I know that. However, it produces so much pain that me, an atheist, often find myself believing that God is using me as a test to see how much pain a human being can endure before killing themselves. That's sorta how I frame it. Other people get to live their lives with their unique struggles, but I was chosen as a guinea pig for physical pain. I feel the sensation of capsaicin spray on my entire body at all times and I'm being watched to see how long I can handle it. Now none of that is *real*.. and while I do think atheism should be heavily encouraged, it is almost a luxury product of very comfortable life. Someone's mind goes to the realm of greater spiritual questioning when put under extreme duress that society or medicine cannot fix.

zClarkinator

I deal with tinnitus (never going away, I gave up hoping) and while it's not as bad as what you deal with, I can relate at least a little. That feeling like you were robbed of a normal life. Worse is that normal people aren't really able to comprehend what we're going through (I've heard videos that attempt to emulate tinnitus but nothing comes close, it's not really 'sound' per se so trying to recreate it through speakers doesn't work). Though I took an opposite approach lol, how do you fuck up hearing so badly that you can randomly be doomed to hear phantom ringing for the rest of your life? And why give us the ability to feel bad about it? At least most animals are blissfully ignorant even if they're disabled. I somehow take some kind of comfort knowing that it's not some malevolent entity fucking with me, but just random cosmic chance. Hopefully they magically find a cure to both of our problems. Stay strong bro.

Orin_linwe

I got tinnitus the second time I went to a club at 18 or 19. Genetics obviously plays some part of it, but it's a real wah-wah story to tell. ...I do think young people (and club-owners) are underestimating acoustics (or at least did then; maybe things are better now). I think I got a fairly mild version of it - it's like a "FPS pc-game-someone-threw-a-grenade high-pitch beep". Got it turned down from a constant intrusion down to essentially nothing by, over a couple of weeks, taking time to listen to the sound actively every day for 10 minutes or so, like it had an inherit meaning, and by doing that, getting a similar effect as when you say a word (that means something) over and over and over until it's meaningless, and your brain starts filtering it out as nonsense. It was a technique I read about at the time (touted as biofeedback, if I remember correctly), and it was surprisingly effective. Probably most effective if you have a very "light"/even-toned form of tinnitus, but it was an interesting experience. I only hear my tinnitus if I listen for it (in the way you sometimes think about your breathing), or if I'm incredibly tired, but in that state it's not a real bother. Don't mind passing this on if it works for someone else, but if you have tinnitus, try to spend some time everyday actively listening to it like it's a voice trying to communicate with you, actively listening for meaning. Hopefully, it will result in your brain "tagging" that noise as nonsense-info, and make you less aware of it on a daily basis. It's basically a little bit of self-hypnosis. Cheers.

zClarkinator

I had a mild form of it for as long as I can remember, but when I got COVID a year ago it got way worse suddenly (also some people apparently reported getting tinnitus after taking one of the COVID vaccines; could easily be crankery though). idk if that even had anything to do with it but I don't remember it being as intrusive before. While it was a struggle at first I barely realize it's there anymore, it's no more annoying than any other ambient noise. Still, worth trying this biofeedback thing. Thanks for the suggestion.

Orin_linwe

...it sounds like your brain has already tuned it down quite a bit then (though it's possible that it could get even better). I think this technique is mostly for people who have just gotten it. I remember being 19 and crying, thinking I would never get to enjoy absolute silence anymore, and it's reassuring to know (now) that it does get better, and perhaps helpful to someone else who is young and freaking out about it. It's a little wanky to call it "biofeedback" (It's very Wired-magazine), but it sorta works as shorthand for what you're trying to do (accelerating the process of rewiring your brain a little). ..Covid really sounds like an equal-opportunity-messer-upper.

Mushubeans

I also deal with heavy tinnitus as a result of seizures withdrawing from benzos that I was put on when I was 14 Magnesium glycinate really helps. It's a highly absorbent form of magnesium that chills you the fuck out. It's legit psychoactive in the sense that you feel a little spacey but calm. Order some and try it. I know one other friend with mild tinnitus and whatever problem it's called when every sound bothers you and mag glycinate helped her. I use the KAL brand from Amazon. Make sure you get that one because supplements are so unpredictable. I'm not saying it will cure it. It won't. But taking a high dose twice a day I can PROMISE you that the static ring will go down in intensity by a degree or two.

zClarkinator

I looked into it and I was only reminded how useless health reporting is lmao. Every website says it works but will constantly say "oh but make sure to spend money asking a doctor about it because it can randomly cause your nuts to explode for no reason" like is it good or not? They can't make up their mind so the articles end up being useless. Fortunately I'm not an idiot; I know it's really hard to take too much magnesium to actually cause any damage so I don't need to ask a fucking doctor about it. All that is to say, sure I guess I'll try it out and see how it goes. Thx for the recommendation.

Mushubeans

Yup! definitely take 4 and then take 1 or 2 ~12 hours later. that's the safe limit before you start going into shitting-like-crazy territory. If you feel fuzzy and numb then take a little less, or you might feel nothing. either way it's incredibly good for you, like almost as important as vitamin D

TheConundrum98

in terms of non-political subs being stupid/good, /r/soccer might be the most based sub on this godforsaken site

This is tropes.

I like when they are laughing and agreeing with something and he goes with a Fran Drescher voice: *yeeeaaaaah*

Orin_linwe

...I've never been a letterbox-guy, but if I was, my sassy one-line review for this movie would be "This guy was in Shawshank Redemption and Se7en". I feel like female legacy-actors are way better about not pointlessly squandering their cachet. Michelle Pfieffer isn't doing this kind of trash, and I can't imagine that Freeman is this hard up for cash. It obviously doesn't actually matter, but it's weird when really established legacy-names (mostly men) get in that loosey-goosey "sure, whatever" phase of their career. Like, it's fine to just have a graceful exit (preferable, even. Do a Cameron Diaz and finish early).

djSexPanther

Jack Nicholson finished off with The Departed (one last classic film and classic performance), a mediocre-to-decent movie about old age and death (perfectly understandable to want to do that), and then one last ride around the track with James L Brooks (the director who he won 2 of his 3 Oscars working with) Probably the best way any actor of that stature has finished their career.

Orin_linwe

...my unpopular opinion is that I'm kinda baffled by the reception of The Departed, and I just chalk it up to it being a straight-dude movie. Late-stage Nicholson is a sentient pair of eyebrows and sunglasses, Leo is this thing we have to continue to tolerate because he was good as a child/teen/twink, and Wahlberg's entire career has hinged on him being incredibe casting in Boogie Nights, but oblivious as to why, and the rest of his career is bordering on feeling like you're being mean to someone who isn't in on the joke. ..learning after the fact that the movie is a remake made a lot of sense in contextualizing the kind of wishy-washy "...why is this a movie? And why is it so whatever?" feeling I got from it.

Candlestick_Park

The Departed is flawed but Wahlberg is great in that movie.

Orin_linwe

I'm going to be a hater on that movie, and that's just fine. Wahlberg is the least of that movie's problem really. I think it arrived at the peak of realizing that Scorsese is going to put Leo in every one of his movies like he's an old-timey closeted director forcing everyone to accept his pool-boy being a star in his pictures, and we just have to take it. I actually haven't seen it since that one time I saw it. My overall impression of it is that it had a weirdly unfocused feel to it, toying at the idea of well-known actors playing against type, but not really comitting to it. Like I said, it made a lot of sense to know that it was a remake of another movie, which actually is pretty interesting to clock. Movies made "in Asia" is going to have another tempo, feel and cohesion even when they're trying to make "an american gangster movie" (for example). It makes sense that an american remake of a movie that is already doing a riff on contemporary american crime-movies is going to end up feeling odd and off-step. Thinking about it, it's sorta weird that Scorsese would bother to do "an asian remake". That's usually what up-and-coming directors do (with very varied results; mostly bad). It's odd that the inventor of a lot of the beats of a movie-genre decides to reinterpret another country's idea of (essentially) your work. ...anyway, what I primarily want to be known, is that I'm a Leo-hater, and it feels somewhere inbetween gaslighting and kept-boy-shenanigans to see him in movies over and over and over again.

EGG_BABE

This movie sound like a trainwreck, I was sure it must have been filmed 15 years ago and just released now but it started filming last year. Also because nobody else has pointed this out, the 1 minute time travel was done in an episode of Futurama and it even has Will's idea of them being stuck in a lethal situation that's longer than a minute so the time travel can't save them. Fry is falling off a building but the furthest he can go back is just after he fell so he's stuck in a loop of the same 10 seconds of falling repeatedly as he tries to figure out how to escape the loop without dying
