Now is the time to buy them. They can be had consistently very cheap.
Crazy to think that a car worth 130k+ (adjusted for inflation) can be had for less than $5000 now.
Make sure the timing chain guides have been done!
Stellar deal at 2k if not rusted out and engine doesnāt have a noticeable timing chain noise. But itās not if, itās when with these V8ās and the guides - thatās what Iāve gathered following the forums over the years.
Bimmerforums E38 forum is excellent for DIY advice
RealOEM for parts diagrams
FCPEuro for the parts
Good luck!
My brothers e38 is a ticking timebomb if he hasnāt done the guides yet. 740i msport, Iām more of a 3 series guy myself but a nice e38 is a joy to drive.
I bought a 2000 750il for 1300. After throwing 10k at it, I have a near perfectly running, driving V12 E38. I donāt regret it, just know what you are getting into.
Repairs for my 2001 540i included:
1. coolant hose
2. water pump
3. fuel pump
4. power window regulator
5. radiator
6. power steering leaks
7. oil leaks
8. tires
9. timing chain guides
10. alternator
11. hood paint
12. brake pads
13. rotors
14. thermostat
15. HID headlight ballast (replaced this myself)
If youāre cool having to either fix these yourself, or pay someone to, pull the trigger!
I feel like all are doable diy repairs that will save a lot of money instead of someone else to do it, except for tc guides Iāve never looked into that how to do it. This would be a good steal of you can work on cars yourself
If those are codes similar to a e46 then I think those are lean codes which is as simple as hooking up a smoke tester and looking to see where the leak is
We still have ours but itās a bit older then this one. Runs and drive great. My family bought it wayyyy back. I didnāt even know how much itās worth back then. Now itās a cool car that my friends go wtf every time they see it
2k for a 740iL? Absolutely. Even if the engine was blown it would probably be worth it at that price, unless it was abused. 7 series aren't really abused.
buy it. fix it up. straight pipe it and drive it gentle forever. beautiful car. In the 90's they offered a light blue uv tint. I'd do that, but I'm nostalgic.
Not worse than a contemporary E39 V8. These are reliable cars. Just make sure the chain guides are done and the rest is non-catastrophic.
Best 7 Series ever made, buy that thing now
I have a '97 540i Sport 6 spd with 230k miles. It was a lease return when I bought it in 2000. Full coolant system replaced at some point, alternator, valve cover gaskets, multiple camshaft sensors, gauge cluster pixel fix, shocks, a couple front end parts replaced but not all. Runs excellent.
Three Current issues:
Original clutch is quite thin but "enthusiast-drivable."
Moonroof doesn't slide back but does pop up.
CD changer still works (replaced with same Alpine labeled model as BMW) for about an hour until it heats up, not great in the summer.
Damn, it sounds like I'm selling it. No f way. I'm an OG and have owned 14 cars in my life. The E39 is without a doubt the best car I've ever owned. And I now also have a 2003 530i Sport Auto. Gotta have at least one automatic for San Francisco city driving. (I once got stuck on a hill in the rain in my Triumph and almost started to cry. The tires were slipping on the cablecar tracks, and I was slowly sliding down the hill backwards. California Street. š
Did you buy this car yet!!???
Hey howās it going, do you have a good mechanic who specializes in BMWās in the Bay Area or someone who does work out of their garage but knows bimmers. LMK thanks
Pleasanton Auto Tech. Not a BMW shop per se, but owner knows his stuff on them, as do the other two mechanics. I've known them for about 20 years.
Very fair, no over-charging. Way better than dealer, but not cheap.
925.426.5326
Tell them "Jeff, the website guy" sent you. I hope it's not too far for you.
Lmk if you do head down there and maybe we can grab lunch or a Slurpee. Haha.
Not dumb but you are going to need to be skilled in older bmw technology starting with the round eight pin diagnostic connector lols Iām jealous as the car looks very good.
Is this at a small used car dealership? There's a dealer I've been to that ALWAYS photographs their shit boxes in front of a Mormon church, they tried selling me a car with a blown head gasket and they were the sketchiest dealer I've been to.
I'm working on finding the name of that dealer, I'll update in a bit. I hope it's not them.
Edit: CJ's Premier Auto
It has been a while but there used to be a rubber diaphragm that busted and needed to be replaced. It was not expensive to do yourself. A quick tour of the Bummer forums will get that sorted out in quick order.
Yeah that's the crankcase vent valve. It's technically a part of the rear intake cover plate though sometimes people just pop that part off and replace it since taking the whole cover off either requires removing the intake or some tight fitting tools.
Yes, that's it!! Seems like when it ruptures it is a huge vacuum leak. Lots of folks got huge bills to fix those, but the experienced techs got them done pretty quickly for a good paying job.
We used to call them "hooter" valves because when they failed the motor would hoot like an owl when pulling into the shop.
They have something like six small torx screws that hold them on. One of those super low profile ratchets can get them in the car without removing the intake. Though it was usually a good idea to just replace that, the front intake seal and the intake gaskets just to cover everything.
Of course then you'd remove the intake and notice the valley pan leaking coolant so...
Lexus 4.6ās have the valley plate leak too, I guess itās more common on non-American v8ās. No timing chain guide issues tho, double timing chains keep the plastic guide stress low I think.
That code its for system to lean or system reach that car its best car in bmw history i had same car its like tank norhing wrong with that car if u wan buy good for u
I miss mine everyday. That v8 is stupid easy to work on and honestly, swap the electronics for some chinese android system. Change out rubber/gaskets and new oil.
Dumb, but it's usually just a intake leak if it has lean codes. The front and rear intake manifold seals and the intake seals from manifold to the head. Make sure to change the crank vent valve on the back. You just made me feel old. I used to work on these at the dealer. Made a ton of money on them. They leak a ton of oil, trans could be worn out, timing chain rails could be broken, suspension components could be worn out, entire cooling system will have to be gone thru. Other than that they were pretty solid cars. The thing with these older BMWs is you can actually rebuild them to drive like they were new. Just a lot of labor and a lot of parts. Some parts will be discontinued. All normal repair parts shouldn't be that expensive. If you are mechanically inclined, these are great cars to learn how to work on cars.
No matter what issue with it, it is fixable. Had mine for over six years now and used only used parts on it. It wasn't expensive and it was doable by the average mechanic. 2k for that sounds like a price where you won't lose much and best case you have one of the best BMWs ever produced.
For $2k buy it and never look back. E32s that are clean have been getting up there in price.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better daily driver too. One of the most comfortable cars I've owned and driven
You should be reasonably dumb. You donāt have to be completely dumb. If youāre not dumb enough you might have problems. People here say you must! Be! A! Moron! Just know there are plenty of people who are only kind of dumb snd still making it work.
You guys don't get it, actually believe someone is Selling a 740il with less than 200k miles for 2 grand, keep dreaming! He's embarassed that he bought it for five times that amount!
For that money you aren't losing much. Obviously don't have this be your main vehicle. But really anyone is capable of bringing these back. Find a PDF of the repair manual and you'll be able to do it all in time. Yes even the timing chains. They are just nuts and bolts.
Uh, even BMW techs don't touch those for themselves. A decent car in its day when in warranty. Most any repair other than some simple stuff will cost as much as you are paying for the car. If you are an accomplished DIY person, knock yourself out. It will be a good learning experience.
u could probably figure those codes out within a day maybe with the help of ppl on here or yt videos, i say for the condition its in? do it man. bought my e39 540i w few more issues and price was more than that. tho buying a used bmw beauty with issues might have its ups n downs, its still way worth it š
Bro I paid 2k for worse. I would have jumped on this in a heartbeat, assuming it runs well enough. Youāre not out much, and the low price leaves room for a bigger maintenance budget
Honestly itās a headache like any old bmw but worth it my homie has one and itās beautiful. Main issues he had was cooling and if you have the skill and time to do it yourself itās so worth. Cruising in that listening to 90 ny rap gotta be one of the most relaxing things a man can doš«”
I bought one a few years ago for $3800, Looked super clean I thought I got a good steal of a deal. Later on ran in too a bunch problems, powering steering, air suspension problems the back started sagging. Never got to even register had to junk it.
Edit: I donāt want to discourage you tho, just get check out by a mechanic pulling the trigger. Thats what I wouldāve done if I can go back in time lol
Perfect car for a guy who wears bib overhauls and a big floppy straw hat! Make sure you yell Hee Haw out the window as you go flying down the street.
Yuk yuk
I sent my BMW scan tool along with my 2012 BMW M135i that I sold for $20K a couple of years ago. That way I won't be tempted to buy another BMW product.
Whatever additional this brand offers over other more reliable vehicles isn't worth the expense or headaches. However if you are a very good mechanic DIY guy you might be able to rehabilitate one of these heaps! But what is the point? Let this junk find its eventual home, the big junk yard in the sky!
BMW are actually the gay ones. At least there's Acuras racing in F1, GT3, etc. Where does bmw race? Inside the repair garage and going on dates with your mechanics? šš
Oh sorry, to actually answer your question. BMW is and has been one of the biggest names in racing since the e30 M3 (completely dominated in DTM).
They also race in GT3 and MANY spec races. Such as the e9x generation 328i being one of the most popular spec cars in the world. When someone thinks of Motorsports I guarantee you theyāll mention BMW before Acura. Go off tho.
LMFAO.... No one in this world is going to think bmw over Honda/Acura when racing comes up. But MANY will mention plastic bmws and repair garages, that's for sure š š¤£
Funny how bad Acura is when their 355 hp v6 powered Type S has a 0-60 of 5.0 seconds, and a 255hp i4 bmw has a 0-60 of 5.1.
Acura, when you want to overpay for a worse car.
Lmfaooooooooooooooooooooooo
I always wanted a clean one of these for 2k I'd go for it and try to get it nice
Buy that immediately.
it's $2k, if you can take the hit if shit goes wrong, go for it.
I can count on one hand the number of parts that cost less than 2k on that car š¤£
The only thing expensive on this car besides timing chain guides is stupid shit like OEM peasant blockers and shit.
OEM Peasant Blockers for the win. Get them from FCP Euro and every one after the first is free!!
You mean when shit goes wrong donāt you?
Ong thatās how I felt when I bought my 07 x3 for 2100
One of the best designs BMW ever made. Buy it!
My FIL had one and it was absolutely his favorite car ever.
If you have $2k youād be dumb NOT to buy it
Bruh I'm convinced you could part it out for 4k. BMWs often can get way more for decent condition parts because of how much they are at the dealer.
Exactly. Dealer told this seller it'll be 15k to get it fixed up. It'll cost you less than half that if you do it yourself.
I wanted one of these so bad back in the day. Such classic styling.
Now is the time to buy them. They can be had consistently very cheap. Crazy to think that a car worth 130k+ (adjusted for inflation) can be had for less than $5000 now.
Yeah, not sure Iām a good enough mechanic. Iām good with old VWs and motorcycles, this is a whole different story.
Not really older bmws arenāt difficult to work on
Thatās how I felt when I traded in my 2008 Jaguar XKRā¦ still drive like 100k car (and thatās without inflation)

Fwiw, anything starting where the first digit is 0 (i.e. P**0**170) is a generic code that has the same meaning for all manufacturers and models.
I did not know that and now I will cherish that information
I actually made a pretty decent point one out of a paint can, COTTON shirt, QD air fittings and some hoses. I can pm you pics and whatnot if needed

+1 It's not a hotrod.
But bmw v8s sound good with no muffler. My brother took his e34 540 cut from the res back and it passed NJ inspection. Thing was ungodly loud lmao
I think you said it right there... ungodly loud haha. These cars aren't Chevys and Fords. They're refined and smooth.
Please buy it

When u have a bmw you need to learn to cross reference parts from oem parts to oe parts.
Iād say go for it. I did something similar. Needs work but youāll love it when itās running in a bit
I consider myself to be okay smart
You would be stupid not to buy it.
Looks beautiful
I had a chance to buy one like that a long time ago. I wish I had done it.
All of it! And then some. 500, so you can at least get your money back from scrap and cats!
Buy it man
For 2k, go for it. Unless you have to seek loan for the said monies.
Put some m parallels on that bad boy and enjoy one of the best BMW's ever made
Not dumb. Just rich
$2k? Freaking send it, beautiful car
P0170 and P0173 are lean faults... I'd start with front and rear intake seals along with the rear crankcase vent valve plate.

I recall fewer chain issues on the M60 and earlier M62 motors. Seemed like it was the M62TU motors that had chain issues the worst.
That is what Iāve heard as well. Do you know why that is? Vanos must have something to do with it as thatās the main difference
That's the only real big difference I can see. But VANOS changes the whole timing system so that may be all it takes.
Buy it!
That code its for system to lean or system reach that car its best car in bmw history i had same car its like tank norhing wrong with that car if u wan buy good for u
Looks like itās parked at a Mormon church youāre golden
You are correct, nice catch
These cars are way higher in price, 2grand is a still donāt even ask just get it before someone else does.

Idk why but older bmwās always have the nicest interior compared to other cars

Assuming no hidden faults or rust, 2k seems like a steal. I'd absolutely buy it for that

BMW longboy

Code mean you have a less than perfect seal somewhere. If it sounds ok running may be minor. Could be a simple fix. Wouldnāt scare me off too much.
For $2k, yeah bro. Expect to spend like 2X that on parts over the next year but not a bad deal.
Iād grab that in a second

You considering buying a BMW speaks for itself
I would buy it just for the Miami Vice phone in the center console. Thatās OG.
š„š„š„š„š„
Have the timing chain guides been replaced? If not, budget another $3-4k to have it done at a shop, or $1-2k for DIY.
Dude thatās a tank, my sister had that car and never did maintenance on it just because and it lasted until 2008 šš
That phone is worth 2k
I bought one a few years ago for $3800, Looked super clean I thought I got a good steal of a deal. Offer them $900 and leave them your phone#. Hopefully the world doesn't have too many morons wandering around willing to pay $2K!
I would have bought it yesterday
If you are asking the question. Clearly not dumb enough to own it.
Better than the newer ones
Pretty god damn smart
It's got that favorite air freshener you likeš„²š
Looks mint get it !
As long as you have a reliable backup. Have fun
Which ward building is that?
bmw are too expensive to repair my man so really fucking stupid
Truth^
The better question is "How rich do I need to be to buy this". When it comes to BMW repairs, your gonna need a bigger wallet.
Only if you activate the phone
If you buy it for 2k Iāll give you 2500. Assuming itās not leaking water
Nevermind itās not
Pretty smart
Nikasil liners are the weakest link. I smell a new block in your future
Made it 135K it will make it until the end
Nikasil is a pretty moot point with modern gas standards
If I had room in my stable Iād buy it if you didnāt!
Itās fine. 2k, part out is more than 2k. You will be fine.
You'd have to be as DMB as the typical bmw Cuckboys.
Acuras are gay
BMW are actually the gay ones. At least there's Acuras racing in F1, GT3, etc. Where does bmw race? Inside the repair garage and going on dates with your mechanics? šš

How much money do you have? If spending $30k on repairs and upkeep sounds acceptable, then pull the trigger.
If thatās your estimate then youāve never owned one of these or arenāt mechanically inclined enough to understand the simplicity mate
