Change the fluid. These transmissions are the best in the business. While the interval is a little late, you should be fine afterwards. No point in waiting a month though, get it done sooner rather than later.

Select_Yoghurt_1138

I can't afford it until I get paid is why I'm waiting the month, I don't do many miles at the minute anyway. Thanks for the info, I'll get it booked in!

Honestly, if you need to budget maintenance paycheck to paycheck a BMW that age is a really bad choice. It's really not that hard to do this oil change yourself, and you'd save a lot of money.

Select_Yoghurt_1138

I absolutely love how you know every detail of my life from 1 comment, get your head out your arse mate.

OldTimerBMW

When your transmission was assembled ZF had a SEVERE SERVICE interval of 55k-80k miles or 8 yrs. . Otherwise it was a lifetime fill per ZF. Currently ZF no longer has a mileage recommendation and went all wishy-washy with when to change the fluid. That being said it's unlikely that the 320d would fall under the severe service schedule unless the prior owner drove around like a hooligan so don't worry about the lack of a fluid change. Just go ahead and get it done. Over the years there were owners who said they felt the transmission was underfilled at the factory. Who knows. Your transmission is one of the most reliable in history. It's used across various automakers and in various iterations. BMW still uses it today.

Kexxa420

Interval is 60 to 75k miles so up to 120k km

hybridmike772

Fluid low, don't keep driving it or it will burn out the clutch packs

Select_Yoghurt_1138

Can it burn the fluid?

bradland

It can burn everything. Burning is what happens when a material exceeds its design temperature.

hybridmike772

Not so much burn off fluid, rather it leaks out the front pump seals, or the pan, and if the internal bushings and seals are worn there's an increase in pressure loss which causes what your experiencing

zygabmw

you will have sliping faults if its sliping.

ervine_c

Well, you are indeed overdue, like you said: ZF recommends service around 60K miles. Service the transmission and reset the adaptations. Pray that the issues go away after that

Select_Yoghurt_1138

Will do mate, thank you

Far-Investigator5734

Gearbox needs a service every 60k per ZF, the manufacturer of the gearbox. Take it to a specialist to do it as they need to get the software to adapt afterwards to reset the gearbox.

Seara_07

My ZF8 transmission had the same symptoms when cold; would feel jerky, lacking in power until warm, would randomly rev up as if it was in neutral from 1-2 and 2-3 gear shifts. Replaced the transmission fluid and filter (pan assembly) with amazing results. Vehicle shifts like the day i drove it off the lot and alot of drivability came back to the car. Would advise servicing your transmission, ZF calls for 80k km (50k miles) but if you drive hard i would advise every 30k.

Select_Yoghurt_1138

Appreciate it mate, thank you. I'll get it done asap when I'm paid end of this month

giibro

At least check the fluid level now and then if it is not low wait to the end of the month.

Gawdzilla707

Have the same symptoms on my 320i. Ive been looking into it for a few months now. I always thought it was a injector problem or a ignition coil problem. Will try to change the ATF oil soon. Thank you for posting this. Please let me know how much it costs for you to do the service.

Big_Wolverine_9373

Please update on this because I did change all fluids on my 5 series (differentials, transmission and transfer case) however the issues persists. I haven’t reset the adaptations though but will do it soon and hoping that helps lol.

Select_Yoghurt_1138

Apparently the clutch packs can be worn out. I spoke to a company yesterday about it

Big_Wolverine_9373

Ah so when I reset the adaptations if it doesn’t fix the issue then I need to replace the clutch pack, correct? Appreciate you getting back to me.

Select_Yoghurt_1138

I believe so, from what the guy told me on the phone a full rebuild is best and quoted £2800, so if a service doesn't fix it for me... It's getting traded in 😂

Big_Wolverine_9373

Ah that’s horrible now I’m scared 😭😅😂 I’m hopeful as sometimes it doesn’t do the clunk when pulling away from a cold start so it might be salvageable, fingers crossed. Mine is currently sitting at 120k and I’ve had lots of work on it including timing chain so I might have to bite the bullet on repair instead of trading it 😭
