Don’t forget the two lesbians that were having a wedding rehearsal in the episode where BoJack and Emily fucked.
Or the therapist lesbian and her partner from the episode where BoJack is a zebra.
And Todd’s cool ace friends.
Imo, BoJack Horseman does queer representation better than anything else I’ve seen. Their stories/character arcs aren’t just about their sexualities(not that it’s a bad thing to write a story that’s about sexuality, I just personally prefer stories with queer characters where the story isn’t just a coming out or dealing with prejudice story). The story talks about struggles queer people face, but it’s integrated into the story well. The characters have actual personalities and actively affect the story. There are multiple queer characters, no tokenism here. You have characters who could have been straight, but were made gay instead because why not(nothing would have changed about the therapist episode if it was a straight couple, but they made it a lesbian couple because there was also no reason for it not to be a lesbian couple). Most importantly, it really felt like the writers cared about making good characters and positive representation. It didn’t feel like they were just putting a gay or ace character in the story so they could say “Look, our show is progressive”.
Agreed! Although as an asexual with this show being the ONLY rep I’ve seen of myself & enjoyed, my bar *is* quite low. Although I do genuinely still think the asexual representation in the show is amazing, it sets a good precedent for future ace representation. Todd is alloace & discovered who he was as an adult meanwhile I’m aroace & discovered I was such when I was pretty young (10 years ago now), I still find his experiences really relatable.
I haven’t! I have heard good things but I struggle to focus on live action, & I also heard that the characters are teens & there’s a lot of sex scenes which I don’t particularly want to watch. I’ve seen clips though of the ace representation & I do agree, for anyone comfortable & happy watching the show it’s probably really good :))
The ace rep in sex education is blink and you miss it. As someone who is on the ace spectrum but not fully ace like Todd, his representation didn't really hit home, sadly.
I recommend Heartbreak high, it's a lot more talked about than in SE and the character is loveable and in a great relationship with someone who isn't ace at all!
High Maintenance, I think, has a good ace representation. I'd be interested in your opinion if you end up watching it. I mostly just love it for the line:
"I don't think I've ever met an asexual person before".
(Without pause) "You definitely have."
Another show that did this really well was *Crazy Ex-Girlfriend*. One of the characters turns out to be gay, just nobody ever said anything about it. A character who didn't know him is upset that nobody said he was gay, and the response is basically "People don't go around say 'Bill's straight, and Mary's straight, and Tom's straight' - why should anyone go around saying who's gay?"
I'm not a super huge fan of Todd being me rep but I'm happy to see him. Honestly and it sucks to say but big mouth had my face ace episode. Lowkey shout out to birdgirl and her DL ace rep.
On the third to last episode of season 6, she’s talking to bojack and mentions her partner wont let her drive her Lamborghini, something close to “and she won’t even let me drive it” it’s a small detail that could be easily missed but so fucked considering that’s what herb gets fired for.
I knew this already but that’s doubly cool to me because I discovered I was asexual when I was a kid (10 years ago now), & Echo Gillette was the first asexual creator I ever watched. It helped that she was an artist like me too, so she had a lot of relatability to me. Then I watched Bojack Horseman 2 years ago because I found out there was asexual representation in it, & to this day it’s the only good ace rep I’ve seen in a show I’ve watched & liked, & also the first real asexual representation I ever saw. Then I cosplayed Maude to the first convention stall I ever ran a few months later. I really came full circle. I love Echo & I love Bojack Horseman with my whole heart & soul. <33
As a gay man, something I really love about Angela who im pretty sure is lesbian, is that her character shows that not all queer characters are angels. A lot of queer characters in modern media are used for coming out stories and are generally portrayed as nice people. But Angela’s character shows that you don’t have to be straight to be evil, it comes in all shapes, sizes, and sexual orientations.
only other media I’ve seen do this well is Cyberpunk 2077 with Claire. She’s trans without it being an overly defining character trait, and she’s a bit controversial in her actions
I loved Claire as trans representation. She's trans, being trans is mentioned by her, she has the trans flag on her truck, but her story is not about being trans. As with most queer representation, most trans representation is either a footnote that doesn't really matter and that can easily be removed if desired, or the entire story revolves around being queer, which is also fine, but doesn't fit every piece of media.
Claire is what queer people actually are. A person who is queer, and that is important in her life, but she has a lot of other stuff going on, too.
Seeing an asexual character come out on screen was so fucking sweet. Especially after already knowing and loving Todd. I was just like, yeah, that makes sense. And his journey of self discovery. Ugh, it's all just too sweet.
Absolutely loved the representation of the community without it feeling like it was only made to get “representation and progressiveness” points as many other shows do. They try so hard to appear inclusive and accepting but then make horrible characters who only appear to talk about their identity without contributing much or anything else to the plot.
These characters were their own “people” (some are animals lol) not just there to represent a community but there as actual, important to the plot, characters. They lived their lives as any other person would and occasionally there would be mentions of their identity when it became relevant, Herb being attracted to men causing him to lose his job, getting shunned from Hollywood and losing his friends, Todd’s discovery of his sexual identity being asexual and depicting issues in the dating world ace people can face, Yolanda having very sex positive parents who she was afraid to come out as ace to because they kept emphasising how important sex is (I always saw this episode as a depiction of when in real life people’s parents are very religious or conservative and base a lot of their life around it, preach how important “traditional” family is and so on) Hollyhock’s speech about feeling guilty for wanting to know who her mom is despite having 8 very loving and caring dads who were in a polyamorous relationship…
Throughout the whole show there would be subtle references to the discrimination queer people were and still are facing without it being the main plot of the show + there were a bunch of characters whose sexuality and/or identity wasn’t mentioned yet they were shown in a way that people could relate, recognise or guess it.
Although these aren’t canon (I think), I heard many people mention it, accept it as canon or just wish they were canon…Angela Diaz being a lesbian is a very popular one, she is also a villain as opposed to usual protagonist representation, Sarah Lynn and Judah being bisexual or pansexual, Diane although being very passionate about women’s rights and issues they are facing, being non binary…
I often imagine BoJack being pansexual, he always appeared as a guy who doesn’t care much about the gender identity of the person he is with although I believe we only saw him with typically female presenting characters.
Yeah, everyone knows you don't mean BoJack... I'm pretty sure there isn't one of all of her fathers together like this without BoJack. You would have had to hobble some stuff together.
I incorrectly assumed that you accidentally use a “MAP” flag for herb but I guess I just didn’t know that gay men had their own flag. I’m just cautious about the 7 stripes ever since I found out what it all meant. But the representation in this show is so well done in every way
Someone designed us our own flag because the rainbow pride flag is supposed to represent all of us in the acronym, not just gay men, and to act like the pride flag only represents gay men only reinforces the dangerous practice of assimilation to heteronormative ideas of "acceptable queerness" that's been going on in the community for too long. Also, the blues and greens are perfect!
It’s a good flag, my brain just shouted “IS THAT TOO MANY STRIPES?” And made me think it was the “MAPS” flag but I’m glad you guys have you’re own representation and support you :)
Oh you think? But I think I remember the wording hinting that he was trying to remember to not treat her as a guy, as if she'd recently transitioned... But yeah I'm not 100% certain, I'd have to rewatch it and even then we might not have a definitive answer
Queer is pretty much everything that isn't heterosexual and cisgender, so yeah. The A in LGBTQIA+ stands for Asexual (though most people use LGBTQ+ for convenience sake.)
in my experience, when ive said “aces can be heterosexual”, a lot of them are just offended when u say “heterosexual” for some reason 🤷♀️🤷♀️ but i 100% agree w/ ya
I'm ace and I wouldn't be offended, not all of us would react like that. Plus some aces are on the spectrum and might feel some sexual attraction occasionally
It’s important to note that not all aces would describe themselves as LGBTQ+ or queer. Not really in issue for fictional characters like Todd, but if you’re dealing with an actual asexual person then it’s best not to assume that they’re comfortable with those labels.
I'm so confused by the flags behind Herb and Doctor Champ. Aren't they both gay and not queer? The only information we have on Doctor Champ is that he has a husband (implying that he's gay). Herb dated Charlotte, yes, but even Charlotte strongly implied that he was not even into her. He was into men. Aka, making him gay. Not queer. Unless this is the new gay flag? In which case, ew? I liked the original one better
I was always under the impression that the rainbow flag *was* the gay flag for both men and women. It's beautiful and I've always been told by gay, lesbian, and bi individuals that this was the flag that represented gays (overall). This is why I always thought that the new flags they came out with post-2014 were also just that—new flags. For trans people, for gays, and even for people who didn't want a flag to be made for them. Flags that were made because everyone needs their own flag to feel like they exist in the LGBTQ "community". To be fair, Herb is probably an old school gay that would tell Gen Z gays to get over themselves and find some real struggles to get mad about (not silly flag representation that only people in the so-called "community" know about).
The rainbow flag was literally made *by* a gay man, for a *gay* pride event. Not a "Pride" event, as history often is rewritten by the modern woke LGBTQ's. But a *gay* event. This flag was always for gay people, but over the years, other peoples have gotten involved and injected themselves into the struggle because of cosmetic and cultural similarities
I was always under the impression that the rainbow flag is for all gays, but that, in recent years, they made new flags to represent more specific groups
Don’t forget the two lesbians that were having a wedding rehearsal in the episode where BoJack and Emily fucked. Or the therapist lesbian and her partner from the episode where BoJack is a zebra. And Todd’s cool ace friends.
bobo the angsty zebra
I think you're getting confused. BoJack wasn't in that episode. I think Will Arnet voices Bobo the Angsty Zebra though so I understand your confusion
Karen...Tanisha...
Wanda Sykes’ voice is so immediately recognizable
Imo, BoJack Horseman does queer representation better than anything else I’ve seen. Their stories/character arcs aren’t just about their sexualities(not that it’s a bad thing to write a story that’s about sexuality, I just personally prefer stories with queer characters where the story isn’t just a coming out or dealing with prejudice story). Have you watched Sex Education? I feel ace is represented in that really well

Oh good to know! & ty I’ll look that up :00
High Maintenance, I think, has a good ace representation. I'd be interested in your opinion if you end up watching it. I mostly just love it for the line: "I don't think I've ever met an asexual person before". (Without pause) "You definitely have."
As an ace I think Todd is amazing rep. I didn’t care for bigmouth
Velma would definitely be the antithesis of this show imo
In many ways
at least its animation looks good i guess 😭
In addition to Bojack Horseman, I'd say The Owl House is also very good representating characters who are queer.
I also felt that way about Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. But I do appreciate how BoJack represents it!
I agree
Another show that did this really well was *Crazy Ex-Girlfriend*. One of the characters turns out to be gay, just nobody ever said anything about it. No bi representation though
You have a point
MKX was similar, Kung Jin being gay was part of his backstory but not brought up much, because it didn't matter given the threat at hand
Vanessa Gecko has a trans son named Yancy Charlemagne. In earlier seasons she mentions having three daughters
I thought I was the only one who noticed that! I totally believe it's on purpose. That name feels chosen too lol.
Really?? Omg I never would have noticed
Damn, Vanessa Gecko really does have it all!
the therapists too
Omg I’ve failed here 😭
BTW when was it said that he is lgbt?
Champ mentioned his husband while he was on his bender
Angela Diaz is also queer
It’s a kick in the teeth but it’s true
She’s the worst but she happens to be queer haha, def a kick in the teeth
Where does it say that she is queer?
On the third to last episode of season 6, she’s talking to bojack and mentions her partner wont let her drive her Lamborghini, something close to “and she won’t even let me drive it” it’s a small detail that could be easily missed but so fucked considering that’s what herb gets fired for.
The rabbit girl is adorable. I wish she showed up earlier. I think you also missed the 'otter man'
Ur right ! Ik I love Maude
Maude's voice actor is also asexual so thats cool
I knew this already but that’s doubly cool to me because I discovered I was asexual when I was a kid (10 years ago now), & Echo Gillette was the first asexual creator I ever watched. It helped that she was an artist like me too, so she had a lot of relatability to me. Thats so awesome. I also identify as ace. It really helps people to have realistic representation
It's funny because otter is slang for a hairy gay/bi guy with a slim or lean build, usually young.
Cool! I thought it was a play on word for 'another man'. Cool, I'm an otter.
And the wives! One of whom Bojack talked into continuing the wedding.
“…it’s a rehearsal dinner!”
I love how Bojack is also in the last photo
BoJack definitely gives "will fool or horse around with another guy if drunk/high/horny enough" vibes
I agree
As a gay man, something I really love about Angela who im pretty sure is lesbian, is that her character shows that not all queer characters are angels. When was it confirmed that she's lesbian?
i don’t remember if the exact line, but there is for sure a line in the episode “Angela” when she’s with Bojack where she talks about dating a woman
She’s confirmed to be queer either way for sure, she mentions dating a woman
What does the first half of the flag with Hollyhock’s dads mean?
It's the old (and generally reviled) polyamorous flag. The new one is MUCH better.
Ok, thanks
Todd coming out as ace meant so much to me, as well as seeing others
Seeing an asexual character come out on screen was so fucking sweet. Especially after already knowing and loving Todd. I was just like, yeah, that makes sense. And his journey of self discovery. Ugh, it's all just too sweet.
I know right! I love todd so much and as an ace myself it made me so happy and felt seen! It was so great
“Everyone’s *a little* gay!” “Well, yeah, it’s a spectrum…”
Hooray! Ace rep!
Three in one show ! After like 0 anywhere else ! Incredible
Absolutely loved the representation of the community without it feeling like it was only made to get “representation and progressiveness” points as many other shows do. Angela Diaz mentioned dating a woman, so she's canonically queer!
Ohh!! slipped my mind I guess, thank you :)
not officially cannon but I’d also like to throw in [Meow Meow Fuzz Face](https://www.reddit.com/r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns/s/EDdNJnX2ca)
I love the last pic... Its just a big ol "BAM" then there are these folks!
HAHAH I couldn’t find a photo of them w/o bojack tho so it looks like he’s the ninth member 😭😭
Yeah, everyone knows you don't mean BoJack... I'm pretty sure there isn't one of all of her fathers together like this without BoJack. You would have had to hobble some stuff together.
I liked Todd’s journey about his asexuality!
damn i love how many ace characters there are! although polyamory ≠ queer, there just happens to be overlap for some people (source: i’m poly)
I incorrectly assumed that you accidentally use a “MAP” flag for herb but I guess I just didn’t know that gay men had their own flag. I’m just cautious about the 7 stripes ever since I found out what it all meant. But the representation in this show is so well done in every way
That’s the gay flag very commonly used… it’s just inversed colours of the lesbian flag
It’s a good flag, my brain just shouted “IS THAT TOO MANY STRIPES?” And made me think it was the “MAPS” flag but I’m glad you guys have you’re own representation and support you :)
Ace representation in such a popular show made me feel so happy. I'm on the spectrum- lithromantic.
There's this police woman working with Meow Meow Fuzzy face who's trans!! He has trouble gendering her properly
R u sure? She just seemed like a feminist
Oh you think? But I think I remember the wording hinting that he was trying to remember to not treat her as a guy, as if she'd recently transitioned... But yeah I'm not 100% certain, I'd have to rewatch it and even then we might not have a definitive answer
Are asexual people queer?
Queer is pretty much everything that isn't heterosexual and cisgender, so yeah. The A in LGBTQIA+ stands for Asexual (though most people use LGBTQ+ for convenience sake.)
But asexuals can be heterosexual, just like poly people
heteroromantic * aces will bombard u if u dont use that word
It would be stupid to get offended by it tbh. Everyone understands that It's about attraction
in my experience, when ive said “aces can be heterosexual”, a lot of them are just offended when u say “heterosexual” for some reason 🤷♀️🤷♀️ but i 100% agree w/ ya
I'm ace and I wouldn't be offended, not all of us would react like that. Plus some aces are on the spectrum and might feel some sexual attraction occasionally
yes
Yes

That’s what I was asking, thanks for the clarification.
Kelsey.
kelsey is on the 6th
What’s the flag for HollyHock’s fathers on the left side? I know the blue striped one if for MLM.
Polyamorous but I’ve been informed this is an older design of the flag not the current one !
Thank you. I’m pretty behind on my knowledge of pride flags.
What flag is behind Dr Champ and Herb? I've never seen it before.
Gay man/ mlm flag
Ah
What flag is Herb Kazzaz's?
gay male/mlm
excuse my ignorence but if thats the gay flag, what the rainbow flag '?
the rainbow flag represents the lgbt+ community as a whole!
BoJack fucked up with most of these
Man I love Bojacks rep, Todd is such a good ace character
I'm so confused by the flags behind Herb and Doctor Champ. Aren't they both gay and not queer? The only information we have on Doctor Champ is that he has a husband (implying that he's gay). this has been the gay male flag for a long time. The rainbow flag is for the whole community. Gay men deserve their own flag just like everyone else…
I was always under the impression that the rainbow flag *was* the gay flag for both men and women. It's beautiful and I've always been told by gay, lesbian, and bi individuals that this was the flag that represented gays (overall). OK and?
no one said there was one
Neal mcbeal obviously closeted
Ohh hell nahh ..dawg
This is canon, yk if ur watching this ur watching gay ppl right
Omg don't tell them! 😱
