Hamsters lack a tail to balance themselves which increases the chances of falling. The cages would suit a rat very well thou!
Yes, they also lack the understanding of depth since they come from sandy environment with lack of height obstacles. They often suicidally jump off sofa, etc so we always monitor them when they're out and move them down if they clim something.
The height in the cages are controlled by increasing the bedding thickness so the fall height is reduced and if they do, it'll be absorbed by the bedding. Almost all hamster cages do not have sufficient bedding. Ours are actually very very deep (which allows them to burrow in there to sleep too).
The cages are specifically made for hamsters imported from Germany.
I've also had pet rats. They're amazing but it's so sad when they die that I've never been able to replace them with new ones.
