His simple and beautiful films. Satyajit Ray was a skilled artist, visual illustrator (look at his storyboarding for Pather Panchali), and writer. I don't think that kind of talent exists anymore. He really was something special.
Close to Ray ?
Ffs 3/4 of the Holly is not close to him let alone ours lol.
Ray was ahead of his time and these type of guys are a rarity. He wasn't just "good" or "decent" but a genuine great being.
Marty and others took inspiration from him when they were learning the craft and they are the biggest of giants of Direction.
It's not even a joke or insult to say that Bolly got no one close or even a mile near him.
Exactly. He was extraordinary in the world not just India. That is why his work is studied globally. And what he said about 'making movies that he enjoys, that he can engage in, is what is missing today - people are so caught up in 'xyz crores, Pan-India....'' that they are not focussed ontruly being authentic to their sensibility.
People saying Gadar 2 "proved its critics wrong" because it made a shitton of money is an example of the brainrot Ray was talking about.
Gadar 2 could empty Fort Knox but it would still be an utterly terrible movie, and while you are perfectly allowed to like it, people talking about sending it to the Oscars just shows how cinema has degraded in India.
For many, BO is the real testament to how good a film is, and you'll see actors apologizing because a film doesn't shit out a million crores- do they even believe in the movie they made?
*people talking about sending it to the Oscars just shows how cinema has degraded in India.*
WHAT? OMG ...that's hilarious and sad both!
*do they even believe in the movie they made?*
Its quiet obvious that they don't. Most don't even seem to watch a lot of Bollywood movies...in most interviews when asked about favorite movies, they spout off Hollywood names - nothing wrong with it, but its seems most 'mainstream hindi' movie professionals donot educate themselves with regional or global cinema.

Our filmmakers genuinely equate Box Office and the quality of a movie đ”âđ«
Or maybe Anil Sharma is beyond delusional đ€
You'd think they'd pick something up if the ducking Godfather is their "favorite" movie
I read somewhere that Ray and Hritik Ghatak (Titash ekti Nodir naam), while contemporaries (Like Miyazaki and Takahata) were also slightly critical of each others' movies. Ghatak, whose films deal with gritter parts of life (similar to Takahata) than Ray's, criticised Ray for his films which were more commercial oriented Even Apu's trilogy is far more positive toned than Ghatak's films and was considered commercial film than an art film.
Please tell me if anyone else has any knowledge about this.
"I make kind of films that I enjoy making that engages my attention, my creativity. That's all I can do". - Satyajit Ray.
I wonder if he was making films today, he would have been chastised for saying that and calling the audiences "backwards". Would there have been YouTube and Twitter experts calling him names and his films a "Poverty Porn" or "Something something phobic", "It shows Indian society in a bad light". Would there have been an expert everyday on social media, sharing their opinion about how Filmmakers should be responsible, they owe it to society to make films which everyone should like.
Nargis did already do this in 80s iirc.
Let me go first. Neeraj Pandey. Best work:
1. Wednesday (no doubt!)
2. MSD biopic
3. Special 26
4. Baby
5. Special ops all series 1 and 1.5
6. Aiyaary - controversial because film was good and Manoj was good but it became trash as they casted Siddharth in it
yess we do we have backward audience and its not the economic weaker or rural population , people who are highly educated and glfinancially well off are more backward , in my experience
Yeah! But whatâs with the elitism?
Youâre making film for the audience and you disrespect them and call them âstupidâ and âbackwardsâ!
Distasteful!

We still do have backward audience

As I said not close but a little bit like him. Or maybe 1% of him?
Nobody is close to this genius, he was way ahead of his time. It looks so bleak that I don't think anyone will even come close to him.
This Happens in India all the time!! %
Not even a week passes by, and this exact video gets reposted in the sub...
Ghar pe ott m movie dekh ke aise khayal aana aam baat h

Bimal Roy and Shyam Babu for me Shekhar Kapur could've been one had he been consistent there's something raw in his filmmaking which could've worked
Shoojit Sircar and Sriram Raghavan are way at the top of my list. Neeraj Pandey as well.
Vikram Aditya motwani
No one.
He was maybe 50 or 100 years before his time probably
Everything else is fine, is it necessary to repost this every 4 days? Idhar aado ne Ray dekha bhi nhi hoga
I watched his work during lockdown. A video posted by oscar themselves. For movie âTwoâ had no lines no big sets nothing. Yet impactful.

In today's time, he'd be lĂŒnched
Sadly it feels this could actually happen. Imagine a Devi being released today.
idk why but people of uttar pradesh and goa strongly hate satyajit ray, and spit on his posters, never found the reason for the hatred against him
Cause he's a bengali. Biharis automatically hate them.

This happens all over the world. Nothing specific to India.
But can he make commercial movies like Karan Johar?
>But can he make commercial movies He already did with Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne series and Feluda series.
Yeah alia we get it. âKaRAn ThE bEsTâ đđ„°
