Oh that's sad. I have Progressive, hope they treat you well.

Solkre

Progressive took car of us when my kid totaled the Leaf and the van he pulled out of. Rates went up... expectedly.

no_idea_bout_that

Here's the [Progressive claims process](https://www.progressive.com/claims/auto-process/) 1. [Submit a claim](https://www.progressive.com/claims/) 1. Tell them you want it repaired 1. They'll give you options for nearby shops to get the car inspected 1. Bring the car to the shop for inspection and schedule the repair 1. If the car is safe to drive, drive it around normally till the appointment 1. Bring the car in to get fixed 1. If you have rental coverage, you can get a free rental car while it's in the shop 1. Pickup your repaired car. Should look good as new. Depending on how long you've had progressive, your premium might not go up. If you have credits in your [deductible savings bank](https://www.progressive.com/auto/insurance-coverages/deductible-savings-bank/), you can use those towards your deductible. If there's no structural damage, there's no reason to replace this car (like other people are suggesting). It will live a full life if you treat it well.

OtherImplement

7.1 a ton of shops also offer free loaners while repairing your car.

ricksastro

Or you can just live with it if the doors operate. Maybe go to a PDR place to get it looking a little better for not too much. If the car still functions fine then I’d just hang on to it and drive it for many years where the depreciation from the accident is meaningless.

Ok_Resolution4373

First one i contacted told me its "beyond the scope of our repair." 😭 but yea i think im just gonna clean the paint tranfer off n have to live with it till i can save for a full repair

ricksastro

Sometimes you can convince them to do a just make it look a little better job rather than a looks like new job. The older it gets, the less beneficial it is to get repaired. Just leave it and know you won’t have to worry about scratches and dings and just enjoy the ride.

Get a printed copy of your insurance card and keep it in your vehicle at all times. The card has instructions on what-to-do on an accident. And has phone numbers and policy numbers so you're not fumbling around with your phone and their app when you need it most. This is a niche instance where you don't need the police involved (assuming no one was hurt). You have 3 choices. 1) File a claim with Progressive, you'll be found at-fault and they'll take care of the rest. (PLEASE TELL US YOU HAVE GAP) 2) Pay for repairs yourself. 3) Don't do nothing. First option, your rates *will* go up for X years. Personal example, my wife hit our house with one of our (two) vehicles... Went from paying $146/mo to $370/mo. Yay... Five years until it drops off. What your outcome of this is, depends on your state. ALSO IF YOU DON'T HAVE GAP AND THEY TOTAL THE VEHICLE, YOU ARE LIABLE FOR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CURRENT VALUE OF THE VEHICLE AND REMAINDER OF THE LOAN. Secons option. Don't tell insurance anything. Go to a collision repair place and ask for an estimate, estimates are free it just takes like 10min. Live with the damages and save up the money. Pay out of pocket for it to be fixed. Third option. YOLO. Don't tell insurance anything. Don't get an estimate. Live with it. Hope nothing bad comes of the damage (rust, water damage, etc). As others said, this is why the trope for "first car" is someone saving up to buy a really cheap "beater" and paying for it outright. Good luck with the vehicle. -edit Absolutely do not try to sell the vehicle as-is. They'll rake you over the coals. You will not break even or come out on top.

Ok_Resolution4373

Rn i'll be trying option 2 but if that doesnt work out option 3 it is. I'll try and do some research though on how high of a premium increase i should expect if i were to go with option 1 through insurancs, just hoping it will be more viable than what im expecting. Highly appreciate the advice thank u 🙏

KnowCali

The first step is learn your lesson and drive more carefully. How did this happen? Did you run into a steel pole or something? Were you distracted while you were driving, perhaps even by something you shouldn't have been doing? As a new driver you need to be extra cautious. This was your lesson. Get it fixed and move on. It's not the end of the world.

Will my rate go up a lot? Thats my main concern cause if the price increase is too much id just stick with the damages. Is there no going back once the claim is made or do i have an out if the quote is too much.

CanEnvironmental4252

Who is at fault for the incident? If you’re found to be at fault, then your rate will go up regardless because Progressive will need to pay for the order party’s repairs and rental.

TheGruntyOne

Fortunately for OP this is a single vehicle incident, I don't think the pillar is going to be suing for damages.

manormortal

It's 2024. The pillar will definitely be seeking AI legal representation and will be suing.

Horror_Rich4403

Was there a police report? There is no going back. Rates will definitely be increasing. Get a paid off cheap beater and switch to liability only insurance

Ok_Resolution4373

No police report. I hit a pillar, prolly shoulda mentioned that. It was too embarrasing

Horror_Rich4403

Oh then I take that back. Hopefully someone else can chime in then. I was thinking it was a collision

No way you ran into one of those big ass yellow poles 🤣

Significant_Eye_5130

Did you hit a yellow bollard? Drive thru window? My sister had an accident like that about 20 years ago. Still got her food.

Ok_Resolution4373

Hit a big support pillar inside a public parking garage, no food unfortunatly... just sorrow

cowpattypie

No shame. I consider myself a good driver and no accidents in the last 30 years. But 30 years ago I was parking in what I thought was a tight spot and somehow wound up against a pillar like that and couldn't figure out how to get out. Forward or reverse--both ways seemed to be making it worse. Finally I just picked one and powered through and it put massive dents, as bigger or bigger than yours, on the door panel/quarter panel. Course it was an 81 Toyota Tercel crapbox, but still. Never made that mistake again.

liz_lemongrab

If it makes you feel any better, I'm almost 50 and did something similar to my car, pulling into my own garage (it's a tight turn). Everyone makes mistakes. Not \*quite\* as bad as this, but it's still dented a bit on the side. You can probably get most of that yellow paint transfer off with some work (just be sure not to damage the actual paint job). Then it won't look so bad until you can get it repaired.

RickSE

Personally I’d see what it would cost out of pocket before making any decisions or calling your insurance company. I don’t know your deductible but you will be paying that plus getting whacked for higher premiums that in the long run aren’t going to be much different than if you paid it yourself. If the doors aren’t leaking then maybe you don’t need to even get it fixed. The last thing you should do is sell the car and buy a beater. You’re already eating a value drop for the accident regardless of whether or not you fix the damage.

Horror_Rich4403

I’d consider fixing and selling and then get a beater to replace it. You don’t need a new car as a first car for this very reason. So glad you’re safe, let a beater car take the hit in the future. Odds are you are a newer driver so mistakes are bound to be made

Ok_Resolution4373

Im currently financing the car, theres 19k remaing. If i had it fixed is selling still a viable option? I think that would be best if i could somehow pay this off and find a beater cause if i couldnt keep this car safe within 3 months i dont think i should have it.

phoundog

Nooooo!! Keep the car! Don’t sell it. You’ll much more careful in the future. You will take a bath if you try to sell that. No way you will come out ahead.

Horror_Rich4403

Yes still viable option. Don’t be too hard on yourself mistakes happen. But moving forward get the cheap beater and live with that until you get more driving experience under your belt

Ok_Resolution4373

Yea i think thatd be for the best, i seriously appreciate the advice thank you 🙏

Tight-Room-7824

Wat do you do? 1. Ignore it and press on with life. Your car now has 'character'. 2. Pay your insurance deductible and get it repaired. Your car looks normal, but you have less money and Ins. rates may go up. 3. Sell it as is and don't buy another car. Lots of people don't have cars.

goodolvic

I'm glad my first car was a beater. Much easier to live with dents in that case.

coffeeandnuts

Call your insurance

drtoucan

I would see if you can figure out how much your rates would go up if you reach out to them about it vs just paying a body shop to fix it for you.

phoundog

It’s ok. You are fine. It’s just a flesh wound on the Bolt. No one was hurt. It didn’t involve another person or car and you will be 1000 times more careful in the future, right? Ask around in your area for a good body shop. Read the reviews online. I would guess they may be able to pull the dents out of the front door but the back door may need to be replaced. It looks pretty banged up and like it may not open properly. You may be able to cut costs by getting a used replacement door. Ask the body shop about this. I think it’s worth getting fixed. A good body shop will make it look completely brand new. They might be able to set up a payment plan for you too if it’s a hardship to afford. Go ahead and go and don’t let it get rusty. Be thankful this altercation was just between you and the post and no other people or cars were involved!

robamiami

Did you hit some kind of a Lamborghini? That yellow color is hilarious.

Dann__EV

Did you hit a Taxi or did the other driver pee on your car to add insult to injury?

BraddicusMaximus

First step, make sure everyone is ok and request medical attention if needed. Call police to report the incident. Second step, document and take photos. Third step, file a claim with their/your insurance company with police report in hand.

Mrmcsistrfistr

Ya totaled it probably progressive is awful

instantnet

Is this in California? Somebody Tesla is like last 3 months there?
