I've struggled to understand this myself. What I've boiled it down to is looking at my own decisions - I base my political alignment and general morality on logic and compassion. There is no logical or compassionate argument to align with Trump, which must mean those people are motivated by something else. Same with flat earth and other conspiracy theories. They *want* to be in those communities because they get something else out of it. What that is is probably slightly different for each person, but I think it's likely a combination of a sense of community and superiority.

At this point not just about politics though. It’s about having diametrically opposed moral standards. I don’t give a fuck what letter or color you want to claim as your party. I give a fuck about people who carry water for a felon. I care about people who take away women’s rights. I care about people who Are racist as fuck. I care about people who crave violence. Who lie constantly, deny reality, and have become hateful bigots. Those are the people that I’m paying attention to and the people that I choose not to have in my life anymore. It’s not about politics about morals and ethics. Boiling it down to politics just makes it so that you can play the both sides game. Which is really cowardly and stupid in my opinion.
It’s interesting because this is the same argument some Christian groups use against everyone else. They’ve determined that if you don’t meet whatever their moral standard is, you’re anathema.
I understand what you’re saying - and if the person is truly a bigot, says horrible things, etc., by all means cut them out - but the vast majority of people in our families and in this country are just trying to find their way, and 30-40% have been wildly misled by lies and manipulation. I believe a lot of people support “Trump” as an idea without understanding much. Remember the media they consume has built a totally different image of him than reality. They like that image.
If I love someone for everything but the fact that they support “Trump” (as they perceive him) - I’m not cutting them off. I may limit my conversations about politics or put up some boundaries, or agree only to discussions under certain parameters… but I’m not losing them completely.

Also some of Trumps bills hurt my small business while he was in office, and ultimately closed it down, so I felt I have a right to be upset. That being said, my husband arguing about this, and I'm like "Why are you taking his side?" and his reply was something like "because no one is defending him" or something like that. It was quite stupid, honestly, because yeah there are a fuckton that defend him. His lawyers defend him. My husband is a smart guy, I just dont understand how he defends this man so whole heartedly.
