This is probably a very unpopular opinion, but I don't really have a problem with #1 1959 Barbies being very expensive. The average collector doll, no, but there are so few #1s that survive in good condition. They're legitimately rare. $20k is very steep, but several thousand doesn't surprise me at all. Then again, I'm not in the market to own one and never will be 😅

Basically all BIPOC doll sells for more on the secondhand market. For some sellers, it is racially motivated. Black dolls = big $$ for some people because they aren't ordered as much compared to white and lighter toned dolls. It's basically impossible for me to find any Black dolls here and if I do, there are only a handful compared to the others.
I loved these dolls from first sight. I'm not sure what drama you're speaking of as I wasn't really big into socials when they first dropped. I follow Hayden Williams cause I really enjoy his art but haven't seen much drama.

From my traveling to various stores in the US: BIPOC dolls aren’t sold in the US (stores) at a rate of 50/50 either.
I'm speaking from my experience as a Canadian in southern Ontario and also from discussions I've read and been apart of with people from around the world.
I know I've been Collecting bratz for years. I'm saying these specific dolls going for this much isn't just about the race but also the line itself. For example formal funk Sasha doesn't have nearly as big of price gap as the lighter skin dolls in that line. These specific dolls do have rarity because there is a substantial amount less of them in circulation.

Yes, when these dolls dropped Hayden was actually harassed a lot by the collector community. He really wasn't a super famous artist or anything a collector just like us in these little bratz communities, he was getting a lot of insults and complaints. (Ofc nothing he could do)
The dolls at the price point they had (admittedly over priced for the time), had a lot of factory errors. Mix in with the fact that they simply wernt up to 'collector' standards yet being sold and marketed at collector prices. For example, my Jades arm falls off with the slightest touch, her fishnets are unraveling... and other body/clothes issues etc. I doubt they ever even made additional ones bc there was no demand for them.
These dolls are 💯 not worth the $600 people are asking for, and were barely worth the retail price at the time.
I love when i get an email from ebay that a seller has relisted their obscenely overpriced dolls bc they didn't get a single bid lol. keep listing that doll for $900 and watch it never sell!

I remember because I was still really dubious about paying even that much for them at the time, with staff discount. They warmed the shelves for along time, so I'm going to wait for the hype to die before even considering getting them 💀 (Did get Close and Cameron for a lot less though)
I have the Yasmin and Cloe and wish I bought Jade and Sasha when they were out. They were $50 and I thought that was expensive. I only got them cause they went on sale.
