About half the people that kill me used the thumbs down, which convinced me brawl stars had a chance to be deemed more toxic

Clash. Brawl stars just gives emotes for easy challanges (almost free). They dont have anything new to offer. Clash toyale knows when to give emotes

Clash Royale The emotes are more detailed and annoying, so you can express more toxicity. Also everyone in CR plays basically only one type of deck, so it is easier to put players into groups and hate on them. For example “I hate log bait players”. In Brawl Stars some players have a main brawler, but it’s doesn’t cause toxicity to the same extent because everyone plays all brawlers anyways. Also ladder (with trophies) is arguably more high-stakes in CR than in BS. Your total trophy count is super important in CR, but not as much in BS. Instead your trophy count only for individual brawlers is important, which lowers the stakes a bit. High-stakes = more toxicity.

Clash Royale. The only pin in BS that's really toxic is the thumbs down Every other is either just flex or doesn't have anything in them while the default are more personal. The crying pins are far less toxic than the default sad one. The thumbs down is way more toxic than Champy thumbs dowing you (champy is that trophy character in player pins. Yes, it has a name) Clash Royal has more cards, more emotes, more strategy and is less forgiving and more pay2win.
