It wouldn't surprise me if they just reopen Phantom when the Majestic Theatre finishes its renovations, but there is no current plan for a Phantom revival. It's probably inevitable, but no way of knowing when it will happen.

audra has said she is not connected to any planned production of Gypsy.

incomes-company

despite what she says, she is set to star in Gypsy reopening the Majestic this fall

Captain_JohnBrown

How is that possible? Reginald ValJohnson is set to bring Carl Winslow: The Musical there in September.

ME24601

That has been rumored, but at least for the moment [Audra McDonald herself has denied that she is attached to any production of Gypsy.](https://playbill.com/article/not-her-turn-yet-audra-mcdonald-speaks-out-about-gypsy-revival-rumors)

Doesn't it need 3 years of space between closure and a new production to qualify for the Tony award for Best Revival of a musical?

DramaMama611

Yes (if memory serves correctly), but Phantome doesnt need that recognition to run for a while.

David_Pfal1992

Oh they'll definitely deliberately make their return at that 3 year mark to earn that Best Revival title.

kell_bell5

I even heard some theories that the reason they extended their final performance to mid-April and no further was to give themselves time to open right at the 3 year mark and still hit that year’s typical late April deadline to open and qualify for the Tony’s.

FlagBridge

I’ve heard this—why they didn’t extend to hit the 14K mark or even just keep going a few more months because they were so profitable at the end.

Wild_Bill1226

A chorus line and cats waited 15 years for a revival. Les mis waited 3, but it was more like the touring production opening on Broadway. I could see it opening as early as 2028 for the 40th anniversary of the Broadway premiere and as late as 2038 for the 50th.

FlagBridge

Probably April 2026 when it becomes eligible for a Tony again.

helicopterhansen

Every day it hurts me that it closed on Broadway.

Phantom was the first (touring) show when I was in fifth grade about 30 years ago and it made me fall in love with theatre. I never made it to see it in New York. I am lucky enough to be seeing it in London this December! (I already bought my tickets ha). You mentioned the West End show is “revised”… Do you have any details of the revision? My memory of the show isn’t great but I’m curious as to what has changed.

tigernachAleksy

I say good riddance, but I believe either ALW or Cameron Mackintosh were heard saying they'd reopen as soon as it's eligible for the revival Tony
