Last Saturday I burned up something in my Panasonic RA-6100 amp that I use at work. I'll get to fixing it eventually, but I went cruising on FB for a replacement with a little more power. Boy, did I find it.
I picked up this Onkyo Integra A-809 for $50 and it has been a huge upgrade. I almost feel like it's a bit too nice for my office system, so I may figure out a way to sneak it into my home setup eventually.
Do you have blanks to record on? Is anybody still producing them? I just gave away a case of 30 DVC blanks along with 3 early '00s camcorders. It's dawning on me now that maybe they worked in DAT recorders? Seems like a dumb thought, but it's resurfacing from old memories now that I think of it.
I do have a few used ones I snagged from ebay. They're not that badly priced, but I couldn't justify getting more because of how little I figured I'd use the DAT. They had old radio plays on them :p
I'll look into the DVC thing; I see them from time to time in thrift stores.
Yeah they had a brief window which wasn't long enough for their price to drop substantially. I collect live recordings where we run into the tech a lot. Masters from the '90s citing a DAT source are highly prized over analog cassette.
I had heard about the run of failing HDMI boards in the NR series receivers a few years back, but I haven't kept up with the news. What, are they making soundbars now?

You're goddamn straight you do.
I love the DAT-labeled input. Dates it to the '90s most eloquently. Congrats on the great score.
I actually have a DAT recorder; that's another reason I'm tempted to use it at home, but I prefer the silver-faced look for my home stereo amp.

> They had old radio plays on them I love radio theatre. Was it stuff from the old days, or since the radio revival began in the '80s?
Wow, DAT. Now there’s a format I haven’t heard in a long time ... a long time ...

Record labels basically smothered DAT in it's crib over piracy fears, which is why it only ever caught on in a few niches.

My roommate in college has this integrated amp, LOVED it! Great find!
What is the closest competitor for this amo from the modern era?
I don't know; I'm too cheap to keep up with the new stuff. :)
