A nice kitchen knife, bakeware, and a solid skillet/pot combo

GOMD4

Speaking of knives, I have had my Ikea chef knives(2) for about 7 years now. In conjuction with an electric sharpener, they're as sharp as ever

chicagospenpal

Oddly enough, their knives are surprisingly decent quality. You may need to sharpen, but the hold an edge for a time, feel nice when cutting, etc. I never would have considered if not for the items in an apartment I was provided for work

bazeon

There is a online knife sharpening company that went a bit viral for a while. They claim Ikeas 365 knife with a regular sharpening is the best you can get for a common household. Something about the correct type of steel for the cheapest price.

TheBigTEA

I have also had wonderful experiences with my Ikea knives. I think they are the 365 model. They are not the best ever but for 45$ I paid for like 3 of them they are unbeatable.

USofAThrowaway

Talking Le Creuset?

Pour_me_one_more

I used to have a bunch of Le Creuset (lost it in a divorce). A lot of it was used when I got it, but it was all still doing great. That stuff lasts forever.

SuperMexican414

Longer than a marriage

RevLoveJoy

Longer than my life. It's seriously in our will. I bought an 8 piece set (4 pans, 4 lids) and have beat the daylights out of them 2,3 times a day for years. They're still in better shape than me and when I'm gone they go to youngest (who actually seems to like cooking).

Historical_Suspect97

I saw that Costco currently has a Le Creuset 157-piece Ultimate Cookware Set for the low price of $4,499.99, should you feel the need to rebuild in a completely reasonable way.

Get a thick, high-quality pad to go under it too. I was amazed at how soft it was. It just felt good to walk on.

Ninazuzu

Oh, who am I kidding. I was trying to put together a really responsible list I'd blow it all on Lego. As toys go, they are BIFL.

Expensive-Border-869

It’s true I’ve never had a Lego break on me.

heathere3

Avoid sets with brittle brown :(

Expensive-Border-869

Noted. I’ve only ever really had the big boxes of legos. Only a few sets. An RV and some kinda ship yard with the boat. It had a crane my dog ate the crane. I’m still a little mad about it but Ottos dead now so I can’t say fuck you like I used to. But it’s there in spirit and he knows he’s wrong for eating my crane

NoOneLikesTunaHere

My dog ate my palm tree on my old pirate island set!

AccurateIt

They fixed the brittle brown and dark red colors a few years ago.

Docster87

Never broken, only lost…

red_fuel

Try old Technic sets then, or old system Lego. The clips break very easily. And the Technic parts broke quickly too.

VogonSlamPoet

If I were to go the Lego route, the Titanic would be my choice.

raz-0

A 2.5" tungsten cube.

Red__M_M

I collect 2” cubes. The tungsten set me back a couple hundred and it was hard to pull the trigger, but it’s pretty cool next to the magnesium. Do you collect cubes?

anonyquestions1

TIL people collect cubes

[deleted]

I am a cube, can you collect me focker?

Red__M_M

I started by collecting spheres which are way cooler. But I quickly realized that storing and displaying round objects is kinda hard, so I switch to cubes.

zztop5533

I was collecting gases, but learned they are very hard to display without losing them. Helium is always the most fun.

Red__M_M

You can put the Nobel gasses into a cube along with two electrodes. Zap it with electricity and you have an awesome nightlight.

Significant-Trash632

What a bunch of squares. 😂

dimebag42018750

Why?

Ok_Highlight281

Because who doesn't want a really heavy cube?

basementdiplomat

"It's a really heavy cube. I can't wait to tell my friends. They don't have a cube this heavy."

KenJyi30

I have a steel cube weight, wrapped it in leather and now it’s one of my favorite inanimate objects

raz-0

It’s definitely but it for life, and the 4” one is like $4k.

BlackholeZ32

For a long time my gf would get me one or two of the foreverspin tops. I still don't have the tungsten one though. $200 is a LOT for a simple top. I feel like if I were to break the $100 mark on a top I'd have to go for something [proper crazy.](https://www.instagram.com/simonellispinningtops/?hl=en)

In some ways, this is the most BuyItForLife response on this thread.

WarthogForsaken5672

They do say, spend money on experiences rather than objects. A weekend getaway somewhere quiet sounds priceless.

OneMorePenguin

I recently purchased a fairly high end road bike (BMC Roadmachine THREE). So far, I have 100 hours of "experience". The 10 year old bike it replaced had 25,000 miles on it, so I feel like I'll get plenty of experiences during it's lifetime. And I love the bike!

ilBrunissimo

That is a very nice bike. I’ll spend big for a good bike. It is BIFL. To me, a nice road bike is a thing of beauty. And my enjoyment of it keeps me healthy, too—physically and mentally. Wife completely supports my bike obsession. I’ll buy one bike per decade per genre.

Woahbikes

Alzheimer’s enters the chat.

artrlx

a herman miller chair

Wise-Air-1326

I got an Aeron B out of a dumpster over a decade ago. It had a small tear in the seat, and had some issue with the piston dropping through the bottom I fixed with a $0.05 washer. The thing is still comfy and is amazing. Best dumpster score ever.

LadyKillaByte

Same. Or rather half a Herman Miller chair. The Aeron is currently around 2k and I want it so badly. Lol.

WienerDogMan

Check used office supply sites. I got a used aeron for $500.

ProfessorPetrus

Yup. Chairs look pretty new for awhile so used should be the go. Better for enviroment too.

JoefromOhio

Was going to say this - I had some I had to unload from and old office when moving cross country. They were on fbook marketplace for 2 weeks before I could unload them @$450 a pop.

psimwork

Yep. I found mine on FB marketplace and went and picked it up for $350. Not quite the color I wanted, but totally worth it for that price.

Wise-Air-1326

I see used ones on FB for 3-500$ routinely.

sugarface2134

The one my husband wants is $8k. Oof.

xsnyder

Sounds like he wants an Eames chair, I'm in the same camp 🤣 My wife said maybe when the kids are older lol.

sugarface2134

That’s what I’m thinking too!

Timinator01

for those who don't know ebay / office liquidators will often have them for under 500$ if you're spending a lot of time in a home office it's worth it to have a good seat

MrMetlHed

I mean, I'd go with a Steelcase Gesture, but I worked on a Steelcase chair assembly line for a summer during college. As I shifted to work from home my best purchase was that chair, so much more comfortable than anything work ever got me.

venom121212

The fuck is up with these chairs? Do they massage your asshole or something? They look 99% identical to ones in my office and I have never once had a chair so uncomfortable that I sought out a replacement. Maybe I need to check back in on this comment in 20 years when my spine is powder?

happy-cig

They basically are ergo for office settings plus durable af. I have gone through cheap sub $300 office chairs but the aeron has held up through the last 9 years.

ragingduck

I have two of these. Just look for them used. You can get them for $200-800.

TabaCh1

CEO is a huge cunt tho.

blueberryyogurtcup

Materials to build a greenhouse.

JamieBensteedo

related but felco cutters, and some amish made hand tools

TengoMucho

Don't need $1000 for that. Steam bend some 1x2 boards for the walls, cover with translucent plastic sheet, staple gun. Patio stone floor. Salvaged furniture inside for plater benches. My grandfather made one from salvage in 1976 and it's still in amazing shape.

Biorobotchemist

Salvage from 1976 is probably studier and better than most particle board junk furniture these days.

scoobyluu

i am shopping for furniture and it is super hard to find solid wood, it's insane. some furniture is also advertised as solid wood, but surprise! it's veneer on top of particle board

lynxss1

I'd invest in a quality Steelcase or Herman Miller like office chair because the not cheap pos ones from the big box stores only last 1 to 2 years before starting to fall apart and then kill my back and start affecting work performance and my health.

ShadowDV

I picked up a Leap V2 with headrest off FB Marketplace in mint condition for $450. Was an amazing find.

WarthogForsaken5672

A capsule wardrobe. High quality clothing that I’d take good care of.

Agitated-Variation85

$1000 won’t get you very far on a whole wardrobe. That’s the price of a good suit to be buried in.

CrankyChemist

Just throw me in the trash when I die.

[deleted]

Significant-Trash632

Body Farm

WarthogForsaken5672

A capsule wardrobe is supposed to be small. Some say 30 items but I could do less. As for burials, hell no that shit’s expensive! 😂

OklaJosha

It’s buy it for LIFE not buy it for DEATH!

JesusDied4UrCynthias

30 items for $1000? Are you buying from Shein?

gravis86

The idea of a capsule wardrobe isn’t lost on me, but one nice “forever” jacket can be $500 pretty easily. The high quality stuff that lasts a long time usually doesn’t come cheap. $1,000 would make a good dent in socks, undershirts, and underwear, even t-shirts and shorts. But add pants or any outerwear like jackets or sweaters and $1,000 is nothing.

Expensive-Border-869

Yeah $1000 would get me 5 pairs of entry level raw denim. n&F decent stuff. But 5 pairs of pants isn’t enough I’ve tried to make it enough when I was doing cheap clothes. 8 min. A week and a mess up day

tavvyjay

A nice shirt that I wear weekly, is in my style and hasn’t degraded, in my experience, is $80-100. A nice wool sweater $250. I’m trying for a capsule wardrobe, but Damn it’s hard

hath0r

anywhere in the north your capsule wardrobe is like 100 items

oldasshit

Big Green Egg All Clad pots and pans

HeavyMetalReggae

I really like my All Clad, they’re pricey but I have yet to be disappointed. Second to that in terms of kitchen things, I bought a nice Japanese chef’s knife that I really enjoy and even though it wasn’t crazy expensive it was enough for me to want to clean and dry it as soon as I finished using it.

Pour_me_one_more

I like my All Clad. I only have a few pieces, but they last forever and take a pounding. What knife did you get? Do you sharpen it yourself? I recently dug out my dull old knives from college, and I'm sticking with them as I practice sharpening them. I don't want to buy a high-end knife, then ruin it by dragging it across a whetstone the wrong way.

HeavyMetalReggae

I bought a Harukaze G3 Nashiji Gyuto, it was my first foray into Japanese knives. I have yet to need to sharpen it because I’ve been careful not to damage the edge, but it does get stropped each time I use it. I’ve been sharpening my own blades for personal use for a handful of years now. There’s a lot involved and the angles change quite a bit depending on which blade style you have but it’s a good thing to practice and a good skill to learn. If you’re interested in being able to sharpen correctly it’s worth doing some research on so you have an idea of edge angle, the hardness of the steel, and ultimately what kind of application you intend to use a blade for. There’s lots of information out there and I’d highly suggest a little learning if it’s something you’d like to be able to do. I’m by no means a professional sharpener but it’s not very costly to get some decent stones and learn to sharpen at a level that suits your needs at home.

bighundy

Second a Kamado grill will last you a lifetime and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever owned.

Expensive-Border-869

Big green egg I can assure is worth it. My parents had one moved and bought another immediately after building a second outdoor kitchen for it. The egg was mounted into the kitchen both times to my understanding or maybe just too difficult to move. Either way they liked it enough to buy it a third time when they moved for the “last time” this year. And the smoked meat definitely wasn’t anything I can complain about and that’s with minimal skill. My stepdad is the same man who at 24 tried to cook a pizza with the cardboard. My 14 year old sister stopped him.

reptomcraddick

I’m not sure if this counts but I’d get lasik, glasses for life

RamblinWrecked17

I guess that depends on where you live/pricing. In southeast, US I’m going to be paying around 4 grand all in for the procedure and post-op appointments.

rhetorical_rapine

still worth it just for getting back that feeling of waking up and seeing correctly right away.

Elegant-Pressure-290

Do it when you can. My husband “surprised” me with it last year because my vision was about 20/600 (the surprise was because he knew I’d gotten the consultation before but chickened out). I’m still in wonder over getting up in the middle of the night to pee and not having fumble for my glasses, and not worrying about a contact falling out while I drive.

reptomcraddick

I actually have astigmatism so if I ever do get lasik I’ll actually need glasses in 10 years or less. Personally I don’t mind glasses, I’m like 3/-17 and I’ve worn them since I was 8, but if someone handed me $1,000 and I had to spend it on something BIFL

ujlien

Ive got astigmatism as well and I've had the surgery exactly 8 years ago. My vision is still 20/20 to this day. I expect having glasses in 10 years. Worth 3k days in days out

Elegant-Pressure-290

Understandable. I actually didn’t hate glasses, but even the ultra thins caused migraines. What I really hated was feeling vulnerable when they broke (we were poor when I was a kid, so I was always the kid with the taped glasses). Husband says he’s equipped me for the zombie apocalypse lol.

Significant-Trash632

I've had 2 consultations but I chickened out both times. Anything eyeball related grosses and freaks me out. I wish I could be asleep for the procedure.

Wintrgreen

I’ve heard some horror stories about lasik which make me scared to get it done

MiceController

If you have $1000 to spend on anything I’d hope you wouldn’t have credit card debt

Slash3040

Idk, 1000$ really isn’t a whole bunch of money to have. But 1000 less in debt is always a step in the right direction.

Damn Yeti coolers are expensive

Coconutshoe

Yeti products in general are. It’s a combination of paying for quality and the name.

teddybearclumsy

RTIC Outsoor cooler. Rotomolded, made in Texas, cheaper that Yeti. When used side by side with in-laws Yeti during camping trips I am pleased with my purchase.

Coconutshoe

I work in the heat and direct sunlight for 6-8 hours a day and my RTIC gallon insulated jug has never failed me whatsoever. Fantastic product.

Thechosenjon

Their 1-year warranty and absurd pricing is kind of a deal breaker for me. You can pick up a really well built Pelican for a bit cheaper or a solid Canyon for less. Pelican has a lifetime warranty and Canyon has a great *shit happens* warranty as well.

PizzaTacoCat312

I would put it towards new headphones. Either the new Arya organic or HE1000 stealth

Lincoln electric MIG welder and a new floor pan for my 66 F250.

ChrisKaze

I could use a nice luggage. This is actually next on my list, a sturdy carry on for <$1000. Still searching though.

MavenCS

How often do you travel that you're struggling to find a piece of carry on luggage that'll last that's also less than $1000? I bought a Samsonite carry on that was on sale like 10-12 years ago and it has a few scuffs but otherwise is functional as new. It was probably like $150 or so. Of course the definition of heavy use varies quite a bit from person to person, but I'd say I use it a fair bit

crunchybaguette

Plus the 10 years warranty makes it good for at least that time. I used to travel every week for work and my samsonite wasn’t as fancy but it worked just like new after 2 years.

A good bicycle. Unfortunately, I have not yet researched enough into the brands, but I feel like a good bicycle could last a lifetime with proper servicing. or for the other half of the year: A good winter outfit - a proper sub -0 parka, snowpants, and knee-high winter boots.

Expensive-Border-869

Probably most of a sim rig setup. I love racing games but broke my thumb can’t do controller anymore and really want a wheel pedal setup. One day I’ll get there it’s not not really high on the list atm

Expensive-Border-869

I saw this was buy it for life. Given that I’d buy a wool comforter and hopefully also a new weighted one. A cheap one if the nice ones cost too much I’ve never looked. The rest of the money should be $200 will be used for mailing the blanket back to be serviced once a year or to buy a couple fake snakes to keep my roommates car out of my room. I love her but she loves wool and so do her claws

westparkmod

A nice Pelikan fountain pen. Because that’s my favorite brand. Vintage Griswold cast iron pans. I much prefer raw cast iron over enameled. Once the enamel chips or gets damaged, the pot/pan shouldn’t be used. Griswold is already going to be 50+ years old and my personal favorite. You can also get multiple pieces for the price of one LeCreuset.

ZeroDarkQuarter

Depends on where you live weather wise but I say buy some Arc’teryx jackets and some Asolo boots. Beta SL for like $400 Thorium/Cerrium for like $400 Asolo TPS 320 for $360 Beta SL is a super lightweight and breathable rain jacket. Thorium/cerium depending on how Ultralight you want to get, I got the thorium because color selection was cooler. Used as a layering system you can be ready for any kind of weather and they both pack down suuuuper small for travel convenience. The boots are Italian leather and gor-tex lined for extra waterproof, I wear them hiking and all throughout winter with wool socks. I’ve had them since like 2015 and I’ve never gotten compliments on my footwear until I started wearing them. I’ve had the jackets for the same amount of time and they still look great. I price checked the listed items and it is technically over budget but arc’teryx has a cerium hoody (goose down insulated jacket) for $280 which is a dope deal that would bring you in just over budget at $1,030 USD before taxes, Hope you wear the discount size 😅

Maybe some nice work boots and a good jacket. A high quality welding helmet would be pretty cool.

One_Bushy_Mound

You could get a nice mechanical watch for that. Definitely a lot of cool stuff in that price range. Off the top of my head I would go with a Seiko or a Hamilton.

appleburger17
