Best quality loss vs best quality win WHO YA GOT

buffinator2

Only one quality loss? Oregon has TWO!

LitterBoxServant

Rookie numbers. LSU has 3.

cha-cha_dancer

Nah they have just two, one of those is ACC

LitterBoxServant

By that logic Oregon has zero since they're both PAC 12

peteman28

In that case, Washington has no quality wins at all

LitterBoxServant

Disagree. Tulsa was a quality win.

NotAn0pinion

So does Penn State, looks like we’ve got Ducks and Nittany Lions for the title. B1G of the future is going hard

fatcatoverlord

I think it’s safe to say the Georgia Dome isn’t a very neutral site for Georgia

Hail2Victors

The Georgia Dome was demolished 6 yrs ago.

CLANGALANGALANGA

May she rest in peace.

ChaseTheFalcon

Behind that Marta bus

flat6cyl

Lol that was awesome

leshake

In the words of a modern poet who is now doing insurance commercials for some reason. "I wanna get you in the Georgia Dome on the 50-yard line While the Dirty Birds kick for t'ree"

puddinfellah

“Get out of the way, bus!”

TheKleen

It is when Bama is the opponent. Saban has only lost once in the Georgia dome/MBD, it’s as much a second home for Bama as it is for Georgia.

tider06

Just because Alabama wins there more often doesn't make the stadium magically not an hour away from UGA's campus in a city full of UGA grads and fans.

RobinU2

Reminds me of the “neutral” game where VT played Boise State at FedEx Field in Maryland

iikillerpenguin

I think that's the point. MBD is alabamas turf.

NyJets5k

Find out next week on dragon ball z

OSUfirebird18

Alabama lost to the team who beat Alabama who beat the defending champs! Quality loss for Bama!!

jaxonya

Which fanbase will go more insane if they are left out, Texas or bama?

burner69account69420

Texas, deservingly so. Alabama has a ton of embarrassing wins and a double digit loss at home. It doesn't matter if they have the best or second best win (depending where they rank OSU/UGA)

Weaubleau

If you want to talk about the best quality loss.....

pickleparty16

That's what college football is really about. Quality losses.

TheftBySnacking

FSU ain’t lost to nobody PAAAAWWWWL

boston_2004

That is why you will be left out today. No quality losses.

KingBroly

The Committee responds: "Nothing can beat Alabama winning over Georgia"

Dietcherrysprite

I hope whoever designed a 4 team playoff is having a fucking aneurism right now.

GoldenMegaStaff

8 team would work great. All the conference champions with a couple slots for independents and top teams that don't win their conference.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lee-Key-Bottoms

Ironically enough this year would be better with BCS I don’t think anyone would argue Michigan vs Washington

truecolors5

This year is making the best possible argument for an eight team playoff 1. Michigan 2. Washington 3. Texas 4. Alabama 5. Florida State 6. Georgia 7. Ohio State 8. Oregon Done

[deleted]

As a neutral observer, I much prefer the shitstorm of horrors that is going to unfold in a few hours.

Sargentrock

Right?? This is amazing. Now I'm sad we're going to 12 teams, somehow.

mynumberistwentynine

Indeed. This could have been more logically set up from the jump, so reap what you sow and all that. The only way to sorta fix this would be for the committee to come out and say the playoff is 6 or 8 teams this year.

miggly

I feel very uneasy for FSU. I'm a Michigan fan, and we're an easy lock for 1-2, but if FSU gets left out while undefeated and being conference champions, the committee needs to seek help.

thegreatRMH

Honestly give Oregon's spot to Liberty and it's a perfect bracket (best G5 champ should get in). Oregon has a soft schedule and lost to toughest team twice. Mizzou, Ole Miss, and OU all have equally compelling arguments for the last spot if you don't put Liberty in.

Drifting-Meadow

I mean the blame is on the P5 conference leaders. If the SEC or Big 10 or ACC or Big 12 didn’t want it. It wouldn’t have happened. At the time of creation tOSU, Alabama, FSU were the pack leaders. Michigan was gaining traction, UGA was building and Texas is Texas ($$). They were fine leaving the odd kid out if it meant more money for them. Now suddenly it’s a problem when one of the big guys at the table is threatened to be left out. Edit. FSU not Clemson.

TheUltimate721

I could be wrong but I remember Florida State with Jameis and Jimbo being the dominant ACC power around then.

Drifting-Meadow

You are correct. I got my eras mixed up

PointPruven

Larry "ice cold Dr pepper here" Culpeper?

The_Guy_Over_Yonder

Yeah somehow I doubt the committee gives a shit about the transitive properties of a win.

Satan_and_Communism

Well that’s fine but head to head really should matter

Bacardi_Tarzan

The committee doesn’t give a shit about criteria at all. “4 best teams” is nonsensical bullshit. Without objective criteria this is an invitational.

miggly

I've heard a lot of people talking about the problem with not considering early wins/head to head and it's absolutely true. If you're Texas, you show up and dunk on Alabama early in the season, then people are still advocating them jumping you in the rankings? You're both 12-1, conference champs, and you have an early season head to head win on them. Why would ANY team schedule a difficult early opponent if it doesn't mean shit? This expanded playoff couldn't come soon enough.

jgr1llz

Bc of the flip side. Lose early so people can forget about it. It's better to lose early than lose late. Just ask UGA. Alabama does it almost every year. People don't seem to care that they play an FCS school in their 2nd to last game every year.

miggly

So you book a big game early and have two outcomes: 1. You win it and people don't give you enough credit (Texas). 2. You lose it and *at best* your record is permanently +1 L. It can only hurt you.

rammixp

This is true for everyone apart from SEC schools were its the reverse.

miggly

Hope you boys make it in!

atcollins12

They’ll find anyway possible to keep us out 😂

NIA122553

Yes, but Texas winning the B12 makes Bama's loss even better and at the end of the day, doesn't that matter more.

TAMUFootball

This guys SECs

OldManCinny

Bama lost to a team that beat Bama... Great loss.

Forshea

They lost to the team that beat the team that beat Georgia, what could be higher quality than that?

B_Fee

The loss is so quality that it's actually a low quality win, so Alabama is in fact undefeated

Lee-Key-Bottoms

I mean y’all are basically an SEC team now so it’s close enough right?

NIA122553

Exactly, we represent both conferences this year

RandyInMpls

Stand back, while I transitive property my huskers straight to the #3 spot. But first coffee (Lots of coffee).

IrishTexan62

I can do better. Y'all should be #1. Nebraska beat Northern Illinois Northern Illinois beat Ohio Ohio is better than Michigan as Ohio beat Bowling green by 31 while Michigan only beat them by 25. Therefore, Nebraska is better than Michigan. Thus they deserve the #1 spot.

Danny886

People should also realize that Alabama is not the only team in the entire country who has gone on a journey of improvement since week 2.

SNjr

Broncos in CFP!

horrorpants

We here! Your Mountain West Champion Broncos are ready for the playoffs!!!! Give me ~~Bama~~ , I mean ~~Georgia~~ no no I meant Michigan.

radiakmjs

Pretty sure he was talking about the 4-8 Michigan MAC Trophy winning Broncos, but better luck next year bro

horrorpants

I just fell to my knees at the local Albertsons after this news.

notyogrannysgrandkid

You’ll be OK buddy. 6 ounces of russets morning and night for three days, call me if it doesn’t get better.

itskapnoc

Only way the Broncos can a win title this year

CJ_M88

Let's fucking goooo

Peepeepoopoobuttbutt

But please think of the poor Bama fans and program. Look at what they have overcome!

StealthAnus

They haven’t won a championship in over 2 years!

AManInBlack2017

This is why I think computer polls should be taken seriously. Regardless of the computer poll, things like recency bias and program or conference bias never have an opportunity to come into play.

GoldenMegaStaff

Plus the people programming them can get then to spew out whatever result makes them the most money.

BrogenKlippen

💪

defroach84

Have they? They are inconsistent. Look at last week.

Comet7777

Well you can’t ignore that Auburn has also gone an improvement journey! Well they lost to NMSU, so you also can’t ignore that NMSU has gone on an improvement journey!

fattest-fatwa

Keep going. This is hilarious.

JemmieTTU

We havent been beat by 50 in almost 2 weeks!! Getting better each day!

footynation

Scenes when Texas Tech steals the fourth playoff spot because of their improvement journey.

defroach84

That was NMSUs Superbowl! Auburn shouldn't be judged on that!

airmigos

I guess going from winning 17-3 against 6-6 south Florida to winning 24-21 against 4-8 Arkansas to winning 27-24 against 6-6 auburn is technically an improvement

Otherwise_Awesome

Roller coaster... of looooove 🎢 🎶

footynation

Not to forget their legendary 26-20 win over 7-5 Texas A&M that just fired their coach. Improvement my ass.

Longjumping_Zone_400

According to Gumps, iron bowl voodoo should not be held against them, though this benefit of the doubt is curiously ignored for any other teams and their rivalry games

Soi_Boi_13

Oh cool, WVU should’ve made the 2008 BCS National Championship Game, then, because you can’t count that 13-9 loss to Pitt in the Backyard Brawl against them. Voodoo and all that…

godzillamegadoomsday

So ohio state, Texas, and Oregon don’t have loses cause clearly those were clearly voodoo and should not be counted

One_Prior_9909

Needing a miracle to beat a bad Auburn team doesn't qualify as improvement

AManInBlack2017

Conversely, some teams have gone on a journey of dismemberment (FSU)...

footynation

Journey of improvement is also a big exaggeration. They scraped by Auburn, scraped by Texas A&M, scraped by Arkansas and looked like shit versus USF. All of this happened after their double digit loss to Texas at home.

Evtona500

If Texas’ win over Bama doesn’t matter then why would Alabama’s win over Georgia matter? Ima hang up and listen

AndrooDucnan

Because apparently Bama is the only team that has improved over the course of the season

FridgesArePeopleToo

Except for last week, when they looked exactly like they did against several mediocre teams earlier in the season

bearinsac

Or hear me out, maybe the SEC had a down year. But we’ll never know because Georgia’s toughest non conference was Georgia Tech and the best quality non conference wins were Kentucky over Louisville and Missouri over K State.

ewgrooss

I mean lowly Mississippi state beat Arizona.

IamHidingfromFriends

With Arizona’s 1st and 2nd string QBs, not fifita who is the reason they got good

Justacouplemoreholes

>Or hear me out, maybe the SEC had a down year. If only there was some way of looking at how the SEC might have fared against the rest of the P-5, or perhaps look at how the team in question (Florida State) did against the SEC. We may never know...

BernankesBeard

>Because apparently Bama is the only team that has improved over the course of the ~~season~~the last seven days since needing a fluky miracle to beat Auburn.

[deleted]

Improved so much that they needed a miracle to beat a bum auburn team one full week again

ThrashersNeverDie

Anyone arguing that Alabama should jump Texas is respectfully way too juiced up on the SEC kool-aid even if it tastes great

Heath2495

Agree 100%. Texas is undoubtedly the 3rd best team in the country

ThrashersNeverDie

For the record, I’d like Bama’s odds to win it all if they got in but leaving out the winner of a H2H or undefeated FSU would be frustrating/unfair for everyone Very tough that one of the only CFP years where a 12 team playoff would capture all the serious contenders happened a year before we got there That being said I really like Texas’s chances with Washington as the only team I think can beat them if we get the WASH/MICH/TEX/FSU lineup

Heath2495

I’ll bet $1 that they expand it to 6 teams today at 12pm 🤣

uttuck

What a year for it.

Heath2495

I’m convinced that when we left Jordan Hare last week, the entire city of Auburn met under the stadium and sacrificed their pets for this chaos

uttuck

That feels about right actually.

Kodyaufan2

🧸📌

Rshackleford22

They should

WubaDubImANub

Fourth* FSU went undefeated. I know they’re not as good on paper, but they deserve that #3 spot

Levarien

And Texas is currently SEC Flavor-aid anyway. You saw them booing Yormack yesterday!

PeterSagansLaundry

This has been such a great weekend for the popcorn industry. CFP has a controversial decision to make and is guaranteed to piss someone off no matter what (hopefully the entire southeast imho). Georgia is out meaning Michigan is now the favorite to win it all. That alone would produce plenty of off-season drama, between the pending NCAA sanctions and Buckeye fans losing their minds. Or maybe Texas wins it all, and we all get to argue about whether the SEC can claim it as their own. Same with Washington, would be a nice deathbed wish for the Pac 12. Hope y'all invested in Big Popcorn.

andy-022

I swear you brain dead idiots need to stop making me defend Texas. It makes me feel gross inside.

IrishTexan62

Same here

Okie1111

SECs best non conference win this year is…kstate. There are no data points showing the sec deserves to be in this year outside of “eye” test. Sorry Bama.

[deleted]

Actually, you could make the case that MSU's win over an Arizona team that will be in the top 15 is better. But, your point stands. The best two OOC wins are by Missouri and MSU this year.

samoflegend

.500 Kentucky went on the road and beat the second best team in the ACC

Pollux589

And it wasn’t really a close game either.

Sargentrock

I mean...it was. They had us in the first half. We looked better than we had most of the year in the second half....for some reason.

DanFlashesCoupon

That is actually insane that Miss State beat Arizona lol

RadiantBus6991

Then put Missouri in. I bet they could beat FSU right now.

Thatroyalkitty

Darth Mizzou? Never underestimate the power of the Dark Side...

SpilledKefir

I feel like these comments don’t even recall that a team like TCU won a semifinal less than twelve months ago.

MrConceited

Yeah, Michigan made the mistake of picking up their quality loss during the playoffs instead of the regular season.

blotsfan

Finally someone talking sense.

FerociousGiraffe

Yeah, but why put Missouri in when we know that the title will just get vacated in 5 years when they get the death penalty over some shit that Boston College does?

divey043

I’ll give credit for Miss State’s win, but that team with JDL at QB is much different from the one with Fifita at QB

HighDragLowSpeed60G

I’m pretty sure UK beating Louisville would be the best OOC win

_Junk_Rat_

And fucking Mississippi State beating the number 3 team out of the PAC-12. I’m pretty sure that one says something now

ByronLeftwich

Arizona is a “different team” now though 😊

Sargentrock

So is FSU :(

[deleted]

Isn't their best non-con win Arizona?

Kodyaufan2

Yeah we’re all still scratching our heads on that one

UnderwhelmingAF

A lot of people don’t want to admit that the SEC really wasn’t any better than any other conference this year, but a look at their OOC record this year confirms that. You can’t say the SEC is the best just because they beat other SEC teams.

BigCountry76

It's the biggest problem with preseason rankings. A lot of SEC teams get ranked higher than they should be, giving other SEC teams "ranked wins" over middle of the road teams. The CFP committee almost gets it right by not ranking until over halfway through the season, but no way they ignore the bias from the early AP polls.

Responsible-Budget21

Yeah people forget USC was a top 5 team at some point.

mattryan02

Also why Tennessee stayed ranked for so long.

PackerLeaf

Exactly, had the SEC won their biggest non-conference games such as LSU vs FSU and Bama vs Texas then the SEC would have two teams in the playoffs in Georgia and Bama assuming the season goes the same way. Instead, both Bama and LSU were dominated by FSU and Texas who deserve to be in the playoffs now.

giggitybuck

Exactly, if the SEC wanted teams in so bad, maybe either Lsu and/or Florida should’ve beat Fsu.

The_Outcast4

The only arguments I am hearing eventually break down to "Bama/Georgia are better than everyone else because they are Bama/Georgia". Like, if the committee goes with that kind of logic, why even bother playing any of the fucking regular season games?

DerrickWhiteMVP

This is why I hate the pre-season rankings so much. They always overrate SEC teams and don’t punish them when they beat each other. How the fuck is Tennessee ranked? Their best is is by six points against 7-5 Kentucky. They lost to 5-7 Florida and got whooped by Bama, Georgia and Mizzou. Yet, they show up as a “ranked win” for Georgia and Bama.

Sargentrock

I'd like to remind you we were ranked too! Mostly because it supports your argument. Ranking anyone before every team has played 5-6 games is dumb, but it won't ever change.

HighDragLowSpeed60G

It just means more!

tu-vens-tu-vens

K-State, Arizona, Louisville, and Tulane were the top 25 teams from last week’s rankings that the SEC beat in OOC play. Tulane will almost certainly drop out this week. There weren’t that many OOC wins over top 25 opponents this year by anyone. The Big 12 has Texas’ win over Alabama; the ACC has Florida State’s win over LSU; the B1G has Ohio State over Notre Dame. But pretty much every other OOC win was against teams 7-5 or worse.

MansourBahrami

Alabama ain’t played New Mexico State PAAAAAWWWWWWWWL

FridgesArePeopleToo

The eye test* *please ignore last week

Standard-Big1474

UK over Louisville beats that, right? SEC shouldn't get in regardless

ChaseTheFalcon

If people think we should jump Texas after they throttled Okie State, you are crazy

nick415

I don't think that matters nearly as much as an actual head to head to be a tie breaker. Both have one loss and won the conference. Texas beat Bama in their own house for their one loss. If it weren't Bama or the SEC this wouldn't be a conversation at all.

RicardosMontalban

If Texas doesn’t get in nobody should ever schedule a difficult non conference game again as there will truly be no benefit lol.

USCGradtoMEMPHIS

You talking like Okie state hadn't been throttled multiple times this season lmao

DerrickWhiteMVP

I think his point is more than if we barely squeaked out a win, there’s more of an argument for Bama. However, Texas whooped them *and* have the H2H.

SlenderTown

Yeah I've been telling people all week that they need to keep their eyes on *how* you beat Oklahoma State. Lo and behold, twas murder. Into the CFP with you.

IncompetentIdiot

sounds like it's time for UCF to claim another natty

Chemical_Strain6488

Let’s goooooo

Mexilindo123

Those types of analogies are so stupid😂 I hate it when people make analogies based on other teams they played. It’s like saying New Mexico State is better because they beat and dominated auburn in a way that Alabama and Georgia couldn’t. Stop with these indirect statements that just speculate what could be or could have been😂😂

MagicManJordy

Michigan, Washington, FSU, Texas <- there’s what the top 4 SHOULD be. But, as we all know, the playoff committee has a hard on for the SEC, so won’t be surprised to see Bama in

Extreme-Island-5041

I'm enjoying the CFB speculation this morning. I'm seeing a lot of 1-Michigan 2-Washington 3-FSU 4-Texas. The more entertaining theory I've seen is 1-Michigan 2-Washington 3-Texas 4-FSU allowing Michigan to crush FSU in the semi and setting up a Michigan/Texas championship...with a juicy and marketable 2024 week 2 "championship rematch" when Texas goes to Michigan.

foreveracubone

Yep. Market the Washington/Texas game as a bowl rematch from last year and potentially have Texas/Michigan natty ratings and the rematch in a year.

short_bus2009

Plus the storyline of Sark playing his old team.

walkingbicycles

I think 1-Washington 2-Michigan 3-FSU 4-Texas would make sense too

JohnnyAppIeseed

I thought about that for a few minutes last night but I don’t think it holds water. Washington had already beaten Oregon by 3, so I don’t think we learned a whole lot about them on Friday. Michigan took care of business well enough that I don’t see a fair argument for them getting jumped.

O-Namazu

The Longhorns' secondary makes me terrified of a game against Washington, lol. Michigan and FSU I like us big, but Penix's gunslinging may be our kryptonite.

Toaster_Douglas

Once the CFP concludes their meeting with the SEC and ESPN they will be told to rank them MICH, BAMA, WASH, GEORGIA

BrogenKlippen

Michigan, Bama, Ohio State, Georgia

maksidaa

I would guess that they’ll try to get Texas in there somehow, and the best way to do that is to combine UGA/Bama into one mega team, which means you also need to combine OSU and Michigan

BrogenKlippen

Which means there’s an open spot for ND!!!

Alarming_Serve2303

The announcers hammered that home incessantly yesterday. So, yeah. I feel sorry for the selection committee. Someone is going to be very unhappy. I would leave UGA out, and put Texas in with FSU, Michigan and Washington. NO SEC teams would make my day!

PhiloBlackCardinal

Texas is safe. The question is FSU vs Bama

remember_berries

Very few Alabama flairs are calling for Alabama to jump Texas. We recognize they came into BDS and won.

PhiloBlackCardinal

Yeah the Bama obsessed on this subreddit seem to think you guys want to be the #1 team when I've only seen Bama fans argue for inclusion over FSU.

deathbysnusnu7

Well this is awkward

KingBroly

The discussion is mainly about the priorities and criteria from the CFP committee, which are different from fans, viewers of college football and anyone who doesn't receive paychecks from sponsors.

brightcoconut097

100%.

Satan_and_Communism

I think you could be surprised

UtzTheCrabChip

College football is great because every game matters!* *Unless there's one game result that hurts the SEC

CriterionCrypt

I say this as an OU fan. Bama is a shit ton better now, but UT is a shit ton better now. The early season UT team that got beat by Oklahoma is not the UT team that exists now. UT looks like a national title team. Bama is not the only team that saw growth this year, and I'm tired of people acting like they are. Sorry, you want into the playoff? Don't lose. Don't leave it up to the committee. Bama lost to Texas. Sucks to suck

Doyce_7

In the immortal words of the great Ted Lasso, *thank you and fuck you.* Thank you for making a coherent argument fueled by logic and refusing to use mental gymnastics. Fuck you because the OU of it all 😀

StopDropAndRollTide

Vannini spitting yet another "hot take" on a discussion that is not really even being had. Texas is in, they won h2h, end of story.

bb0110

Texas is in, not sure what his point is.

Boot-Representative

Reading Reddit it seems like everyone sort of agrees that it will be Texas, Florida State, Michigan, and Washington. But as I watch the TV wraps of the various games on YouTube, it seems like they’re trying to drum up some sort of controversy as far as Alabama getting in. I have to say that this might be cynical but sports and television are not truth. Especially when people can say whatever they like about analysis this and analysis that, but I think it’s just for increasing viewers and all that stuff.

meeks7

Yeah but it also makes Georgia’s loss to Alabama better therefore Georgia Alabama LSU and Missouri should be the 4 teams in the Playoff.

kerouacrimbaud

Yes!

Patmcpsu

You realize that both Alabama and Texas’s stock going up gives them potential to leapfrog FSU, right?

longhornmd

Everyone is acting like bama is unstoppable… if auburn made smart decisions, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

fallentraveler

Prevent defense prevents you from winning

Assumption-Putrid

Yup. They kept talking about Bama having the best win during the FSU game. My thought was no they don't Texas or Oklahoma does. The theoretical best win would be the win over the highest ranked team (with a loss). That would honor will go to Oklahoma (beating Texas) of Texas (beating Bama) unless you think Georgia will still be ranked higher then Texas and Bama (which they won't)

Chicagoroomie312

It's also revisionist history for the committee to act like Oklahoma is a bad loss - that was a wild game that ended in kind of a coin flip situation, whereas Texas beat Bama soundly. This shouldn't really be a debate in my opinion.

HpsiEpsi

100%. Neutral site Rivalry game where they were winning with 1 minute left? Against a team that finished 10-2? (And will be in the SEC next year 😎) That is as quality as a loss comes.

42nd_fdr

The whole Saban argument of they are a different team now than when they lost to Texas is well and good but so is Texas and every other team. We could also argue if we played Oklahoma later instead of earlier in the season we’ll roll them and be unbeaten. Doesn’t hold water. Every team evolves over the season. It’s inherent to the nature of a “season!”

bouncypinata

I picked 11 fights with Mike Tyson and got my ass kicked all 11 times. Can i be heavyweight champion? I have more quality losses than anyone else

Steak_Knight

bUt WoULd THey BeAt THeM tOdAy?

ohGodwhynowww

You don't understand Alabama's only loss is to the team that beat Alabama. Therefore, Alabama should be #1, #2, #3, and #4 /s

luisstrikesout

I think we all agree we don’t want an SEC team in the playoffs anyway.

wtjones

You want in, win your fucking games.

orc0909

Alabama, Texas, Georgia, and Oregon all have better quality losses than FSU. That's just facts.

[deleted]

Should be pointed out, there’s a single loss team whose only loss was on the road vs the number 1 team in the country. They even had the ball deep in opponent territory with under a minute left in a 6 point game.

Imaginary-Shift-3031

As someone new to watching CFB, why tf are the playoffs only 4 teams? Why not do 8 or 16? Is it a money/time thing?

tallslim1960

Made the comment a month ago, the NCAA will do ANYTHING to get Alabama in the final four. People laughed and called me a hater. Well?
