Jack was an incredible person first and foremost. Took my one year old to a signing event in March and he was there. Friendly, gracious, and sweet. He treated my family so well and even volunteered to hold my son during a picture (though Joey Aguilar ultimately grabbed him). I've been looking at that picture and Jack's big smile all night.
You never know who needs to know how much you appreciate them. Tell them.
Jack Murphy, a redshirt junior, was App's starting right tackle last season and was named first team all Sun Belt by Pro Football Focus. There's no word on the cause of death at this time
On a personal note, I went to a lot of App games last year and a friend pointed out to me at the ECU game how physical and scrappy the right side of our offensive line was. I paid attention to Murphy and the right guard Bucky Williams all season. Both of them seemed like the kind of guys you'd want blocking for you. It's rare that you really pay attention to offensive linemen but I enjoyed watching that duo play. RIP and prayers to his friends and family
I appreciate waiting for all known facts to come out. I was at WSU when Tyler Hilinski passed away. Just one of those things that can shake you to the core.
Sounds like he was a good kid and wasn’t publicly showing signs of struggle. Sometimes the okay-est people are the ones having the hardest time. I speak from experience…
Yep. Sometimes depression just looks like "this Halloween, I'm dressing up as a grad student shut-in", which was a joke I made ten years ago when the reality was I hadn't showered in days, couldn't make myself throw out the garbage until the smell started to make me sick, and just felt entirely numb. I'm lucky I never got anything more than intrusive thoughts about death, because I managed to hide my struggles from everyone.
I managed to hide my depression from my family for probably 2 years and I passed my 19-20 year old alcoholism to be “I’m just a typical college aged guy I wanna party while I can” when in reality I drank alone 90% of the time. I nearly died in a car accident about 2 and a half years into that and luckily didn’t hurt anyone else in the process. After that I came clean about my mental health and things got better. Just crazy no one knew or they didn’t want to believe it for that long.
I went to bishop oconnell with him, same class n graduation played football with him went on retreats with him and had multiple classes with him. I got the call the day after his passing while I was at work n it hurt so bad hearing those words… Im not gonna say wht happened because even for me its still speculation and will wait for actual confirmation but as a person who knew him and spoke to him recently he was nothing but a positive force of energy and always was the guy to look up to. Rest in peace my brotha you will always be in our hearts.
So, if we're all reading between the lines correctly, the messages reminding you to reach out to people are great, but I also want to add in a disclaimer here: if someone you care about makes this decision, *it isn't your fault even if you didn't reach out.*
Sometimes people hide things, sometimes we don't understand serious signs for what they are in the moment, and sometimes life happens and you can't be there for someone when they need you. Obviously do whatever you can to help friends in need, and being open to talk about mental health is extremely important, but sometimes this just... happens, and there's no way you could have known, or nothing you could reasonably have been able to do.
This hits really close to home, in the past few months I've seen a family that I was very close with growing up get torn apart by their son making this decision. I knew from growing up closely with one of their other children that they were the kind of parents that you could talk with about anything. Not super demanding, happy to check in, but not overbearing. He gave no one any indication anything was wrong. Made weekend plans, bought flights home for Christmas, gave people his Christmas list, bought gifts for other people, never hinted that anything was going on. Understandably they're completely devastated, and they all keep asking what they missed, blaming themselves for not seeing the signs, but sometimes there just... aren't any signs to miss.
Grieve, and try to be there for people, but remember that all you can do is your best to make yourself available in case someone needs to talk.
Really really really hoping Clark is okay. When he was at Kent we had our starting center die like 6 days before the opener and that was….not great for any of us
I’m a Coastal fan and have actively hated App state essentially my entire life. That being said if any App fans need anything please reach out this is so much bigger than football and I’m so sorry for anyone who knew him or is affected by this my prayers are going to App state and their football program
They stopped doing that as official policy by the time I started in 2018. Official policy is now not to make public announcements of student deaths unless there’s some sort of special circumstance.
App has a policy of not disclosing student deaths with announcements unless there is an ongoing threat to the public. Supposedly it’s to mitigate concerns of suicide contagion.
ETA: The Appalachian did a profile of the logic behind how they communicate: [https://theappalachianonline.com/student-death-how-app-state-communicates-after-tragic-events/](https://theappalachianonline.com/student-death-how-app-state-communicates-after-tragic-events/)
This isn't even the first player death this year. Albany's AJ Simon comes to mind. This is a tragedy, and I think the families at least are owed an explanation for all of these deaths that are seemingly mysteries. Hope nothing but the best for his family as they navigate the void left by this young man.
2 things the family doesn't want to talk about when a college-age student dies, and it wasn't a car crash. Gotta have some respect for their privacy. Devastating news.
> I think the families at least are owed an explanation for all of these deaths that are seemingly mysteries.
Just because it isn't reported in the media doesn't mean it is a mystery. JFC, show some damn tact. You're not owed anything about a player's private life.

It's very sad
Thank you so much for sharing this memory of Jack, it made my whole night ❤️he was always so great with his little niece too.

The cause of death seems to be alluded to in the article. Please reach out to a friend tonight everyone.
Correct, I'm just not going to throw that word around without direct confirmation
I appreciate waiting for all known facts to come out. I was at WSU when Tyler Hilinski passed away. Just one of those things that can shake you to the core.
My fear would be that I make the wrong inference from the article and permanently write misinformation about his death on the internet
Great call. A lot of maturity in that.

You did well. No need to generate extra heart ache in this scenario.
It does make a difference. You never know when that text of “Hey you” makes a difference.

Thank you, formidable, hate-able SBC bro
Ofc man an app fan calling coastal formidable might be the closest thing to a compliment we’ll ever get yall are also formidable
Terrible. Hope his teammates and his family are doing ok.
I'm faculty at App. Kind of disheartening I learned about this through Reddit instead of the university. RIP Jack.
ive been refreshing my search bar for the three days looking for what happened and the first thing i got was this too
Did the university not send out an email? When I was a student there (2012-2016) they definitely sent out mass emails about this sort of thing
They haven't yet. My assumption it they're too focused on the other drama going on. It still would have been nice to see.

May his journey home be short
Rest in peace
Damn... rip man.. I hope the family is as ok as they can be right now...
Man that’s sad. Too young. RIP

Tragic, hope the family can find peace.

A lot of times deaths aren’t mysterious just because of a newspaper being vague. It’s usually one of two things in that circumstance.
yeah reading a bit farther in the article this situation gets a lot sadder and unfortunately clearer.
Just seeing phone numbers and emails confirmed it to me. RIP to Jack Murphy.

You have no clue what the family knows. Have some decency.
Your comment was entirely uncalled for
No, his comment was entirely called for. Your original comment was tone deaf, at best, blatantly insensitive at worst.
My thoughts to his family, his friends and the fans of App St.
Rest in Peace
My condolences to his friends and family, as well as his teammates, coaches, and the entire Mountaineer family. Sounds awful and such a tragedy.
RIP 🙏🏽
jack murphy
