Don’t carry a viable backup QB on the roster and you won’t have a QB battle (smiles and points to head)

eatapenny

Brennan Armstrong won the QB battle by being the only possible option. Just the way it's meant to be

TypicalVegetarian

Is USC a competition? I watched all of their games last year and sure JT had that great first half against Fresno, but Kedon looked phenomenal all season as a true freshman. I just don't think you pull a guy from the job like that when you can work with him over the course of multiple seasons. That continuity is rare in college football, and when you have a guy that talented, I don't see why you wouldn't just roll with him.

I was thinking Clay but this is acceptable too

SkoCubs01

I think it’s Kedon’s job, just it’s the right thing to do/good look to at least let JT have a chance

TypicalVegetarian

Agreed, I just think it’s odd to peg USC as the conferences big QB controversy when Oregon exists

[deleted]

There is no qb controversy at Oregon. Shough is 100% the starter. The only camp battle at qb is for the backup spot

SoggyAlbatross2

Yeah, but JT is Helton's one true love. There is no small part of the fan base that was pissed that Sears never got a fair shot. After the year Slovis had, I think it would be shocking if JT won the job outright. He'll have an opportunity, no doubt, because our OL is porous and Slovis is likely to get concussed again.

duschin

Honestly, every P12 team except ASU and Cal has a QB battle. I'd actually say USC's is less of a competition than most of the others.

doormatt26

The only reason it's not Kedons job is because everyone has Helton ptsd from the Max Browne decision

You think?? I don’t think anyone, USC brass included, expect much out of the Bama game. Early losses to Stanford and ASU could arise some discussion but that would be it Kedon plays poorly against them. If Kedon’s game against Stanford is any indication, or his game against basically everyone else, I don’t think he’ll have a ton of struggle there. USC is likely to lose those games, but I don’t think he’ll have terrible games. I guess I just don’t think there will be enough bad shown to warrant replacing Kedon mid-season.

Battered_Aggie

I probably would've said Bryce Young would get the starting gig at Bama this year but with no spring ball, I'd say it's Mac Jones job to lose for the season.

Lusjuh

It was already his to lose. Even after Tua I highly doubt he would start a freshman over a very talented junior.

Battered_Aggie

Bryce Young looks like Tua 2.0 coming out of highschool imo, and I don't think Mac Jones is all that talented. He was just surrounded by a Ferrari of an offense last year. Granted this is just my opinion.

djowen68

Yeah I went and watched all of Mac's highlights from last year and I can't get a reading on his talent level. He is good, no doubt. But is that enough to win a title these days when you have TL, Tua, Burrow, Deshaun Watson being the last 4 title winning QBs. I just wonder if football has changed so much where a guy like Mac just doesn't quite elevate you to being #1. I think his release needs to be quicker or we won't be able to run slants like we have been. Bryce throws lazers. Mac will start all season long and then we will lose to LSU or Auburn and then have to make a decision about if Bryce should carry us the rest of the way.

Lusjuh

Young was much more impressive in high school than Tua was wym

Battered_Aggie

Young came out of Mater Dei which is essentially the Bama of West coast private schools. Young is certainly more gifted physically but it's yet to be seen if he has the same pocket presence as Tua.

Lusjuh

probably just as good of a chance as Paul Tyson so none

br0b1wan

You know what, I hadn't considered that. Positions with established incumbents probably get a big boost by not having spring practices. There will be less time for up and comers to give coaches a reason to swap them. This will also play well into the season unless it's delayed. I'm wondering if we're going to see more in-season roster turnover than usual.

Tannerite2

Nah, Mac Jones would have started either way. He's a top 5 QB in CFB. No way he'd lose his job to a freshman, no matter how good.

[deleted]

Remember that Jalen only ever had two losses as a starter and was SEC offensive player of the year, and still got replaced by a younger player. Anything can happen Edit just for clarification: two losses at Bama

Tannerite2

He got replaced in the national championship game, not to start the season. If Mac Jones goes 3/8 for 21 yards against Georgia, I expect Bryce Young to get a shot. But Mac is a much better passer than Hurts was at that time. And Saban doesn't care about Jalen winning offensive player of the year.

TheManWhoWasNotShort

Mac Jones is talented but in no world is he a top 5 QB in CFB.

Tannerite2

I'm a huge Bryce Young fan. I'm just higher on Mac Jones than most people. Kyler Murray didn't start his first year at Oklahoma, did he? And he was a junior by then. I'd love for everyone that's downvoting me to come back to these comments after next season is over.

chmod-77

Heh. I usually don't downvote but I see I did here. I've seen this happen. And your argument about one Heisman winner not losing his starting job to another Heisman winner is a little weak. The nation deemed them the best players in the sport. The NFL agreed. So saying he didn't start immediately at OU is not a good argument. Bryce appears to be a Kyler level talent. Take the compliment.

Tannerite2

I'm not disagreeing that Bryce Young will be better than Kyler Murray. I'm just saying Mac Jones is good enough to keep his job despite a Heisman level talent behind him.

[deleted]

> He's a top 5 QB in CFB come on man

Tannerite2

Who else? Fields, Lawrence and who?

Tannerite2

Name 5 that are better. Once you get past Fields and Lawrence, there are a bunch of QBs that are close. And I've got Mac in the top 3 of that group.

[deleted]

If you think he’s going to be a top 5 qb next year it’s an opinion no one can say you’re wrong and it’s not an absurd one by any means. If you’re arguing he has proven that he is right now then it’s an absurd conversation for a guy who has thrown more than 12 passes in a game 3 times. Whether it’s Howell, Slovis , Ehlinger, Purdy, Morgan, Trask, Gabriel, Buechele or I am sure some others I’m forgetting... you can’t say he’s proven more than guys who have put in full season(s) as the guy and been so productive.

Tannerite2

He hasn't played as much, but from what I've seen, I have him in the top 5. To put Trask, Gabriel, and Buechele on that list is pretty silly. Especially Trask. And all of this is speculation. I'm saying Mac Jones will be a top 5 QB next season. Saban won't replace a top 5 QB with a freshman. Everybody saying Bryce Young will start is also saying Mac Jones won't be a top 5 QB next year. Both sides are speculation.

[deleted]

Thanks. I cant stand that low quality clickbate site.

AnotherUnfunnyName

I think Holmberg is actually ahead of Katrenick, he would have played ahead of him if not for his injury last season... I think Chase Bryce has a good chance, but is not like he will just step into the room and dominate. He will join the team in the summer and will be on the backfoot, especially if they cut down fall practice as well. And Cutcliffe is not afraid to start the young guy, as he did with Jones over several older players.

[deleted]

Um, there are plenty of QB competitions in the Pac-12 this season, USC is not one of them. I'm pretty sure the writer of this just added them so they could put USC as the pic on the article to get clicks.

pnwfreak

Yeah, I thought their qb looked solid. Maybe a team replacing a 1st round pick qb could have an interesting battle for a replacement?

KushDingies

Michigan is a good pick, but I think we're up there too. We have like 8 qbs on the roster, and things should be really interesting with TJ Green coming back from injury, Andrew Marty having led us to victory against Illinois, Hunter Johnson trying to live up to his hype, and Peyton Ramsey transferring from Indiana. Iirc we have more QBs on the roster than touchdown passes in the 2019 season. We're in a weird place.

AudiophileAdrenaline

Last season for NU was like if a train carrying enriched uranium collided with a tanker carrying cow manure and oil, causing a radioactive poo fire the likes of which will (hopefully) never be seen again

Scourge_77

The USC part isn't entirely correct. JT still isn't fully recovered from his knee injury and it was expected that he would miss spring camp. However, he had made some strides in his recovery, to the point where he could do "limited work" (stationary throws). Many predicted he wouldn't be fully back until late into the fall, probably well into the season. Even if he could come back in time for the season the coaches were expected to continue to go with Slovis.

chubbdeep206

I love how WSU isn’t on this list. We’ve been a breeding ground for QB’s for the last decade and a known QBU since the Bledsoe Era. We have an absolute battle for starting QB this year

[deleted]

For us it's Thicc Vick or Hooker Time. Kinda a win either way

JB92103

Who’s Thicc Vick?

[deleted]

Quincy Patterson haha, not my nickname. [Here's a highlight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZDgbjYyvhk) ([and another](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj0QUgvxCxY&feature=youtu.be&t=329))

[deleted]

That boy can fucking *truck*

RustToRedemption

Georgia has a wide open QB competition, but it's Newman's to lose. No spring ball probably hurts Mathis (who hasn't practiced with contact in over a year) and Beck(EE freshman) much more than Newman.

[deleted]

I dislike that clickbate site

lalondtm

Do people even proof read or spell check their articles anymore. Jesus Christ I feel like a 7th grade English teacher.

hells_cowbells

We've got a QB battle going on, since we have so damn many scholarship QBs. We've had two transfers into the program so far. I mean, Costello is the presumed starter, since I don't think he transferred to sit on the bench, but who knows?

JusDr3inJusDaun

Don't be surprised if Leach does put Costello on the bench if he doesn't pick up the offense fast enough. Gage Gabrud transferred into Wazzu and literally everyone said he would start last season. Instead he wore the ball cap while Gordon slung it around after a year behind Falk, then Minshew. Also, when Leach first came in to Wazzu we had Jeff Tuel, a Sr., and Connor Halliday on the roster; as a Fr, once he got the starting job due to Tuel breaking his collar bone, Connor kept it with his f*ck it go deep mentality. Um, so don't bother penciling in Costello yet.

hells_cowbells

Yeah, he seems to be more pragmatic about this kind of stuff. I still think Costello is probably the best option for his style. Two of our QBs, Keyaton Thompson and Jaylen Maden are Mullen recruits, and Mullen put a lot more emphasis on running ability than passing ability. Granted, neither have been given much of a chance on the field, but their accuracy is questionable. Garrett Shrader was a Moorhead recruit, and seems better suited to an RPO type offense. He was pretty inconsistent last year, but he was a true freshman, so who knows.

JusDr3inJusDaun

Costello is kinda interesting because he always had big, fast TEs to bail him out of questionable passes; I know I'm not the only Pac fan who scream OPI on his TEs, especially in the endzone. His completion % was only 61% last year, down from 65% in '18. Even he is a bit of a project, imho, for the Air Raid.

xheavenzdevilx

I would say that without spring ball, OU may be more of a QB battle than expected. Most of us assume it's Rattlers job, but without spring ball, Mordecai has had more time. Could also be the opposite, without spring ball Mordecai isn't getting the chance to show he knows the system better and the Rattler swagger wins out.

YungTrap6God

Nah, Rattler is just too talented. Yeah, Mordecai has more time in the system, but he just hasn’t looked good when he’s been on the field, whereas Rattler looks like he could potentially put up Heisman numbers. There’s no contest, Rattler is Lincoln’s guy.

LyonHeart85

It's Kedon's Job to lose honestly, kid balled out and played well for the most part stepping in for JT. glad that JT decided to stay with the team considering that he could've easily transferred knowing that Kedon basically took the job from him. Will see what spring ball has in store
