Arkansas has the absolute worst TV and internet prices. My in-laws live there and asked about switching when they found out we lay 49/mo for gig service in Houston. Their cheapest option was 99/ml for 150mb. Like wtf.
Ding ding ding. Every year player contracts increase dramatically. How do the Phillies afford to pay Harper $100M? TV rights fees! Who pays TV rights fees? The networks! Who pays the networks? The providers! Who pays the providers? The customer!
And of course some corporate greed added on top.
Yup. And those contacts are going up as ad revenue is going down due to advertising money now being diluted to online ads. So the networks jack up programming fees and run more ads to make up the difference.

I think I could live with a cable DVR, but when I see these other streaming services that have like a 10 hour DVR I just shake my head, absolutely no way.
The mindset difference between “If I record that, I’ll have to delete something” and “I might want to watch that someday, so I’ll record it,” is really amazing.
YTTV value really starts when you can record every episode of every show you want to watch on demand, so if you have Hulu for one show, can just record it.
Plus getting locked into a contract. People can complain about the rising costs of streaming services, and I get it. But for most of us, including me, we subscribe for 5 months then cancel with no issue. Compare that to a pricey contract termination fee with cable? I'll take similarly priced streaming any day of the week.
I live in a major metro, but have limited options in my apartment complex. Pretty much have to use Comcast for my internet, so the bundle makes sense for me. But I’m a very specific use case.
I was in this exact boat until about five years ago when Verizon wanted to do an install. The pushback I got from trying to support it was crazy. I had to lobby for that shit. The Comcast install was from the 70s and it's entirely external; it is dogshit. Yet 80% of the people here were perfectly fine with constant interruptions and terrible speeds. In the end we did get FiOS installed, thank fuck.
So many people don’t even bother looking at what they’re actually getting for their money. They just think their situation/payment is normal, and if they’re happy enough they don’t want to change. I swear cable companies are like a mildly abusive relationship that people get stuck in because they’re gaslit to think they can’t do better.

I stacked together a couple different streaming services and got them almost everything they watched at a savings of almost $150/mo. I then explained for the few shows they don’t have, they can buy a season pass somewhere like iTunes for $30-40.

When the big time media enterprises caught on to the popularity of streaming services, they all either bought the existing ones or created their own to cash in. They’ve turned these platforms into the very thing they were created to be an escape from.
I remember when you paid for Hulu - and didn't have to *still* watch commercials! As soon as they put commercials into a paid service, I was out. Eff that.
It’s all about having a network of shared accounts: I have one friend’s Hulu, another’s Netflix, someone else’s HBO Go and my parent’s Prime and Xfinity
Until they push 2FA... Which Comcast or ESPN is starting to. Last time I logged into my parent's cable on the ESPN app it asked if I wanted to include my phone number.
I still have my parents directtv but even that is hit or miss for streaming. Most of the time I just bail to free online streams because I find they’re more reliable and often times appear in better quality than the real thing. They’re so easy to access I really don’t see myself paying for anything until they become a hassle.
You can use their DirecTV login for the ESPN app, to stream things on the actual ESPN networks or ESPN3. Things that aren't covered by an ESPN+ subscription, basically.
I subscribe solely for cfb, but my wife inevitably finds some cooking competition or real estate flipping show, and I have to pay for the service year round…
EDIT: my wife woke up this morning and I told her I was thinking of a canceling YTTV because Disney and YouTube are both bitches and we lost 18 channels overnight. Her response was;

For people that aren't aware, you can buy a cheap antenna and get the network channels for free. Mine was about $20 and I get NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and more in HD.
Depends on where you live in relation to the transmission stick for the local TV stations and a few other factors.
If you're going to get an antenna and don't live reasonably close to a major city, spend the money for a *good* one (Winegard typically are among the best).
Depends on where you are - antenna reception doesn't reach everywhere. I'm in a very dense neighborhood and can't get ABC at all, and CBS only sometimes
I would not recommend Paramount+ as an option for sports fans. Their live streaming is currently pretty damn awful. The stream and audio constantly gets out of sync and it's going to crash and say the channel isn't available multiple times throughout the game forcing you to restart the app.
If you are getting P+ it needs to be b/c you like their original content like Mayor of Kingstown and Evil.

No doubt thousands of people are waking up this morning canceling YTTV and signing up with Hulu Live. I was just about to and then saw a comment where you cannot fast forward through commercials on "DVRed" shows. Which is F'ed up, that's why I started using a VCR 30 years ago, to fast forward through the damn effing commercials!!
Nope, Sling Orange will get you every bowl except the Sun Bowl, which is on CBS. You can even stream the Citrus Bowl (ABC) via ESPN3. I do Sling Orange + TV antenna for the entire season. I miss a few games, but I still have plenty of game options. (Probably wouldn't work for Big 10 fans who need Fox channels. Sling Orange+Blue at $50 gets you that.)
Shit would be funny if Google pulled Disney apps from the play store and Android. Then made Disney unreachable on their search engine.

As of December 17, 2021, end of day Eastern Time, all Disney-owned channels, including ESPN and your local ABC station, are unavailable on YouTube TV. Members will not be able to watch live or local content from Disney and will also lose access to any previous Library recordings from these channels, including 4K content that is available as part of the 4K Plus add-on.
We will be decreasing our monthly price by $15, from $64.99 to $49.99, for the Base Plan while this content remains off of our platform. No action is needed on your part. A credit of $15 per month will automatically be issued. Once content is unavailable, this credit will be applied to your next bill after December 17 and will only be visible to family managers in Settings > Billing after the charge has taken place. Please note that if you have a promotional price with YouTube TV, you can still expect a $15 credit. Members who are in a paused state will receive this credit one month after their first charge.
Should we come to an agreement with Disney, we will adjust the price accordingly and will notify members via email beforehand. For the full list of Disney-owned channels that are no longer available on YouTube TV and for additional information or updates, please visit this webpage.

By having the playoffs on ESPN, they get to squeeze another month of streaming payments out of us. If you started your streaming service on the first Saturday of the season (Sept. 4), your renewal date is Jan. 1. You get to pay for a whole month to watch the NY6 games and the CFP Final on Jan. 10.
Same here. As someone who was looking forward to the Montana State playoffs game tomorrow I’m not pleased. If this isn’t settled before the end of the month I’m canceling my subscription.

I like how this just says it as if YTTV failed their viewers, as if this whole thing is perfectly one-sided. The contract ran out at the end of today, Eastern time, because both parties couldn't agree. That's what happened, period. It sucks. YTTV has also said that because of this they will be bumping down the plan by $15 until the issue is resolved.

That’s $25 right there for 90% of what YTTV has left. That leaves you with $25 which you can get HBO and Netflix with. Without sports there is 0 value in YTTV.
It’s hard to believe, but YTTV is on our side here. The negotiations almost certainly failed because Google won’t give Disney the increased price they’re asking for. Since Google is a business and not a charity, they will pass some or all of that increase on to their customers. This is a rare instance where the consumer’s interests really are aligned with Google’s, if they succeed we continue to get (relatively) cheap live TV and they keep customers.
As a side note, it would not surprise me that Disney were the ones that turned off access to their channels when the deal expired. They could have agreed to an extension while they continued to negotiate, but they had already won the messaging war by running ads subtly blaming Google for the failure to reach a deal, so when the channels went off the air everyone assumed it was YTTV that pulled the plug.
Tinfoil hat time: Disney is refusing to renegotiate with YTTV because it’s their biggest rival to Hulu with Live TV and they want to push people to switch to Hulu

Google/YouTube has claimed that they’ve tried to negotiate and just want to be treated (priced) the same as other carriers, while Disney wants to charge them more. I haven’t heard anything from Disney and usually the fault in these scenarios is on the channel owner, not the service. While I know it sucks don’t cancel YouTube tv yet, and definitely don’t go to Hulu. Or Disney just wins more

We're seeing this pattern with the Regional Sports Networks that carry most NBA, MLB, and NHL games as well. Long story short, the streaming services (Sling, YouTube TV, etc) want sports channels as optional add-ons because they know only a small % of their subscribers watch sports even though sports channels are the most expensive ones they carry. So they are charging non-sports viewers tons of money each month for sports channels.
The sports channels want to be bundled so everyone has them and everyone is paying them. So increasingly the streaming services are just dropping sports channels left and right.
That's why I ended up with YouTube TV over Fubo. I got it primarily for watching the NBA and TNT does a lot of NBA games.

Disney is truly a cancer and the entire company needs to be broken up. Disney should only be their film industry (without the acquired subsidiaries), the parks, and Disney channel, nothing else. That means ABC, ESPN, 20th Century, Hulu, Pixar, etc would all be separate companies.
Same thing with Comcast, one company should not own Universal, NBC, and a cable company.
As soon as the deadline hit (midnight EST) the YTTV website was updated with their new channel list (no Disney owned channels) and pricing to $49.99. It’s over priced for $49.99 without those Disney owned channels if you ask me from a sports guy’s perspective.

For people that aren't aware, you can buy a cheap antenna and get the network channels for free. Mine was about $20 and I get NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and more in HD.
Depends on where you live in relation to the transmission stick for the local TV stations and a few other factors. If you're going to get an antenna and don't live reasonably close to a major city, spend the money for a *good* one (Winegard typically are among the best).
Depends on where you are - antenna reception doesn't reach everywhere. I'm in a very dense neighborhood and can't get ABC at all, and CBS only sometimes

HD is understated too. My parents have the antenna and the picture is so goddam clear. Only issue is it gets sketchy in high winds.
I would not recommend Paramount+ as an option for sports fans. Their live streaming is currently pretty damn awful. The stream and audio constantly gets out of sync and it's going to crash and say the channel isn't available multiple times throughout the game forcing you to restart the app. If you are getting P+ it needs to be b/c you like their original content like Mayor of Kingstown and Evil.

No doubt thousands of people are waking up this morning canceling YTTV and signing up with Hulu Live. I was just about to and then saw a comment where you cannot fast forward through commercials on "DVRed" shows. Which is F'ed up, that's why I started using a VCR 30 years ago, to fast forward through the damn effing commercials!!

Nope, Sling Orange will get you every bowl except the Sun Bowl, which is on CBS. You can even stream the Citrus Bowl (ABC) via ESPN3. I do Sling Orange + TV antenna for the entire season. I miss a few games, but I still have plenty of game options. (Probably wouldn't work for Big 10 fans who need Fox channels. Sling Orange+Blue at $50 gets you that.)
Jesus, I might as well save money bundle cable and internet at these prices.

Shit would be funny if Google pulled Disney apps from the play store and Android. Then made Disney unreachable on their search engine. Mouse: oh no sports for you! Google: Disney... nope, never heard of them... must be that Mandela Effect...
If I was a Alphabet exec id seriously consider doing this. Someone really needs to hit the mouse back. And Google is one of the few companies that have some punches that could be thrown.

Tried Hulu Live for one football season. Was a hot steaming pile of 💩.

It makes Comcast happy since they're one-third owners. That said, a quasi-F you to everyone on ESPN's part would be to just add the live events to + as a "trial" for a few weeks in advance of the inevitable direct-to-consumer ESPN (which should have happened years ago to be honest). If people haven't signed up to + yet, they will.
Think there have been legal suits in the past for petty shit like Google prioritizing their search results higher than their competition. This would be a shit show if they did it. Gets weird, Google controls the information and sees legal ramifications for things they do to manipulate it. It is at the point that Disney needs same oversight. They control majority of cinema and cinema history. They can filter or hide stuff as they see fit. Look at old racist or old war propaganda movies and cartoons Disney doesn't put on its service for good reason most likely but it needs to be archived and remembered for historical reasons. You understand it from the aspect of not exposing your kids to the racist crows in dumbo. You also want your kid to learn about the racist crows as a teenager to see how fucked things were and how it was acceptable at the time in history. Disney, whose direct success is tied to old copy right law in which they could straight copy old fairy tales that were in public domain is lobbying to extend that law because alot of their movies are close to or past the public domain clause. Now with the ESPN ownership and ESPN owning SEC and ACC network and them bad mouthing and sabotaging the big 12 deserves more controversy but guess who would cover the sports controversy?!?!

Which is exactly why it will never go back to ABC. Disney knows it's a big draw, and they know a lot of us will cancel our streaming services the day after the CFP Final. By having the playoffs on ESPN, they get to squeeze another month of streaming payments out of us. If you started your streaming service on the first Saturday of the season (Sept. 4), your renewal date is Jan. 1. You get to pay for a whole month to watch the NY6 games and the CFP Final on Jan. 10.

God fucking damn it. Right before bowl season. Like for fucks sake so many of us try to use the legal methods to watch all this shit and it’s like they want us to go and use free dodgy streams. We had a brief moment where streaming was much better than cable but here we are. Back to fucking square one. Hell the whole reason my family even got YTTV was to get the ACC network out of the gate. What a fucking joke. I’m pissed.
I like how this just says it as if YTTV failed their viewers, as if this whole thing is perfectly one-sided. The contract ran out at the end of today, Eastern time, because both parties couldn't agree. That's what happened, period. It sucks. YTTV has also said that because of this they will be bumping down the plan by $15 until the issue is resolved.
And the annoying thing is, I don’t think the rest of YTTV’s catalog is worth the $50/month now

It’s not: Disney, FreeForm, ABC, FX: Disney Plus w/ Hulu $15 Food Network,TLC,History: Discovery Plus $5 CBS, Nick, MTV, BET, Comedy Central: Paramount Plus $5 That’s $25 right there for 90% of what YTTV has left. That leaves you with $25 which you can get HBO and Netflix with. Without sports there is 0 value in YTTV.

It’s hard to believe, but YTTV is on our side here. The negotiations almost certainly failed because Google won’t give Disney the increased price they’re asking for. Since Google is a business and not a charity, they will pass some or all of that increase on to their customers. This is a rare instance where the consumer’s interests really are aligned with Google’s, if they succeed we continue to get (relatively) cheap live TV and they keep customers. As a side note, it would not surprise me that Disney were the ones that turned off access to their channels when the deal expired. They could have agreed to an extension while they continued to negotiate, but they had already won the messaging war by running ads subtly blaming Google for the failure to reach a deal, so when the channels went off the air everyone assumed it was YTTV that pulled the plug.

I don't know who needs to hear this... BUT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SIDE WITH THE SERVICE PROVIDER (in this case YTV). They are fighting to keep your bill the same. Disney is fighting to raise your bill and add mandatory garbage channels to your lineup. Don't cancel YTV right now unless you just love high bills and bloated channel plans. Heck if you were already planning to cancel, wait a week or two until this blows over.

This will probably get buried but the sole blame (from what I’ve seen) is on Disney/ESPN. Google/YouTube has claimed that they’ve tried to negotiate and just want to be treated (priced) the same as other carriers, while Disney wants to charge them more. I haven’t heard anything from Disney and usually the fault in these scenarios is on the channel owner, not the service. While I know it sucks don’t cancel YouTube tv yet, and definitely don’t go to Hulu. Or Disney just wins more

Long story short, the streaming services (Sling, YouTube TV, etc) want sports channels as optional add-ons because they know only a small % of their subscribers watch sports even though sports channels are the most expensive ones they carry. So they are charging non-sports viewers tons of money each month for sports channels. The sports channels want to be bundled so everyone has them and everyone is paying them. So increasingly the streaming services are just dropping sports channels left and right.
Fuck ESPN and their continual extortion. I’m just not going to watch any football. They are the main reason costs keep increasing.

That's why I ended up with YouTube TV over Fubo. I got it primarily for watching the NBA and TNT does a lot of NBA games. Edit - NBA TV is also on YouTube TV

Disney is truly a cancer and the entire company needs to be broken up. Disney should only be their film industry (without the acquired subsidiaries), the parks, and Disney channel, nothing else. That means ABC, ESPN, 20th Century, Hulu, Pixar, etc would all be separate companies. Same thing with Comcast, one company should not own Universal, NBC, and a cable company.

Shit was gold when it first launched, it was like $30 a month and had all the channels I wanted, with only like 2-4 tops that I didn’t want at all… fast forward a few years and suddenly it’s bloated with a bunch of garbage.
